Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

Let's give it up for Chien-Ming. In a year where the Yankees bullpen has been overused, Wang has pitched 126 innings, which ties him for the American League lead with Barry Zito. After a shaky start to the season he seems to give a solid effort almost every time he takes the mound. Keep up the excellent work in the second half.

Just think. Last year Chien Ming Wang started the season at AAA and now he's as important a player in pinstripes as anyone on the entire team. Where would we be without this "homegrown talent"? Think about this. In 36 starts for the Yankees, which amounts to roughly a full season of healthy pitching, Wang is:

17-9 with a 4.01 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a .267/.317/.366/.683 batting line against.

That's not a bad projection. And I expect his numbers to get better over time.

Way to go!

You make me proud Mr. Wang. You're becoming such inspiration to the youth and future ballplayers from our region. Keep it up.

I know you're pitching great in YS, keep it up as well when you're on the road.

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

Wang has been terrific this year. Every time he pitches I know that we will likely win the game. Other than Moose, I can't really say that for anyone else in the rotation. Keep it up Wang!

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

I've been fortunate enough to see a lot of Wang's home victories, including strong games against Oakland, Texas, Boston, and Cleveland.

Wang has been the winning pitcher in Torre's 1,000th victory as Yankee manager and Torre's 1,926th career win.

I don't know how well Wang has adjusted working with Guidry after learning from Stottlemyre last year. He seems to work really well with Posada.

Wang needs to improve his pitching on the road, although he has had good games in dome stadiums (Minnesota, Tampa Bay), which apparently are less ground ball pitcher-friendly. Also, improving the off-speed pitches will help him get out of jams. It might even improve the K/9 ratio, but I think decreasing the WHIP to below 1.20 and maintaining low pitch counts from start to start is more important.

Finally, health is always key.

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

Wang has been terrific... constantly going deep into games and saving the bullpen. Posada has done a great job with him coming and talking to him when he starts getting wild...

What was impressive today was that he was much more composed than usual with runners on base.

As I said in the team hero thread, he may very well be the exception to the rule that you need high K-rates to survive in the AL. If he could develop his slider, he'd be a number two guy.

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

If only he could improve his K rate just a little bit. I think thats the only thing that seperates him from being one of the best pitchers in the game.

If he does start to strikeout more hitters, watch out.

He would need to develop a good change and gain some consistency with his slider for that to happen. Easier said than done.

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

I cannot say enough good things about Wang. His numbers are fantastic, and he always stays so calm on the mound. Even when he puts runners on base, you are never nervous - he stays out of the big inning with the amount of grounders he produces. He is young and talented, and should be a rock in the rotation for 10 years. I'm excited to see him in pinstripes for a long time.

Wang makes me proud! My fellow countryman, I salute you!
This reminds me of a post I saw here last year. The dude said that Wang will be lucky to get 10 victories in his MLB career. How wrong he was....

I hope more quality pitchers from Taiwan can get to the MLB. There are so few of them as of right now

Wang is outstanding and will only get better. He is our bullpens best friend and helps out a lot more than numbers can show. If it wasn't for Wang this year, our bullpen would have even more innings and maybe would that would cost us a game in the long term.
