Rosenthal: Yanks pursuing Aubrey Huff

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5729904

Super trade-rumor guru Ken Rosenthal had this to say about the Yanks and Aubrey:

Quote:

HUFF HEATING UP

Quote:

The Yankees and Tigers are among the clubs showing interest in the Devil Rays' Aubrey Huff, who is batting .316 in June after hitting .182 in April and .175 in May.

Huff, 29, is precisely the type of second-tier offensive acquisition that would make sense for the Yankees, whose primary focus is pitching.

The Devil Rays wouldn't require a significant prospect for Huff if the Yankees assumed the balance of his $6.9 million salary. The Rays could redirect the savings toward other needs.
Huff has played third base exclusively this season, but he would be an outfielder and DH for the Yankees. He also could fill the Tigers' need for a left-handed hitting outfielder and serve as a platoon partner for first baseman Chris Shelton
.

Seems to good on our end. Just like only having to give up Cano OR Cabrera for D-Train. http://www.newsday.com/sports/printe...y-sports-print

But, if these two deals were to happen I, for one, would be happy!!

Cash and a low-level guy for Huff and Melky for D-Train. No-brainers!! I do realize this is a pipe dream.

Re: Rosenthal: Yanks pursuing Aubrey Huff

Huff is the kind of versatile, patient, powerful guy the Yanks could really use. His defense in the outfield isn't so hot but it is an improvement over Bernie.

We could either have Huff in Right with Bernie at DH and Giambi at 1st or have Giambi at DH, Huff at 1B and Bernie in Right.

Yeah, I don't think that the writer knows what he's talking about. It's not like he has a source for a possible Cabrera/Willis deal, he just threw the idea out there. (And it's a completely ridiculous idea. The Marlins could get an elite prospect or two or three for Willis with his numbers and reputation. They would laugh in Cash's face if he proposed Cabrera straight up for Willis, and rightfully so.)

I wouldn't mind having Huff at all for the right price.

Huff would be a good addition. I wonder what the price would be.

Huff's a nice bat pickup but his defense is pretty awful no matter where you stick him.

The problem is not offense, it is defense. The Yankees can still score enough runs and the last thing they need is another stone handed defender.

If Rosenthal mentions it, that means there's substance to the rumors. I expect more news within 72 hours.

I don't think that you can ever have enough quality offensive players or enough runs. Huff's 2005 was a down year, and his 2006 has been poor, but from 2002-2004 Huff was an extremely good offensive player. Also, he's only 29, so the decline most likely isn't because of his age. Maybe he could get back to his old form here. He's a lefty hitter, which is nice. Also, I don't know much at all about Huff's defense, but I doubt he's much of a downgrade from Bernie Williams or Giambi, if he is at all. If he could bounce back to his pre-2005 form, he could be huge for us. I'd do it if it only took a mid-level prospect.

I agree with you, buddy. Add some bullpen pitching stability to that.

My understanding is that he's quite average at 1st and 3rd and below average in RF. I would compare his defense to that of Shannon Stewart though Huff has a better arm.

Wallace Mathews used to write for the Post and had his own show on 1050 here in NY.
He knows boxing but is an absence when it comes to baseball.
Willis will get so much more than Melky.

I think Huff is a good idea for the right price. If it is for a low level minor leaguer and the remaining salary then why not? Isn't he a free agent at the end of this season anyway??

How many runs did the Yankees score last night?

Around 120 at bats for his career @ Yankee Stadium= .305 .350 .422

This year he is having problems with lefties, I would still take a chance on him though. Even with new management I still classify trading with Tampa as almost impossible. Cincy,Tampa seem to move so darn slow in getting things done. The deal has to overwhelmingly favor them to take action.

The Devil Rays demanded Hanley Ramirez + another prospect I believe last season for Huff. The idea that a low level prospect can get him is absurd.

Batting .236/.317/.354 on the season, and he hit .261/.321/.428 last year. I dont know what happened to him, steroids? Either way I would pass if we have to give up anything of value.
