Yanks, Japan in venture By Matthew Futterman One day after Hideki "Godzilla" Matsui thrilled the Yankee Stadium crowd with a grand slam, the sports company YankeeNets announced a joint venture with a top Japanese media company to promote its brand in Japan. The company is expected to help sell the Yankees brand, especially to younger fans, in baseball's top overseas market. It is similar to a venture YankeeNets has with the soccer club Manchester United. Stephen S. Swindal, co-chairman of YankeeNets, and Hal Steinbrenner, a YankeeNets board member, will represent YankeeNets on the board of the new venture, a partnership between YankeeNets and Yomiuri Shimbun. "This transaction demonstrates our ongoing commitment to expanding worldwide marketing and branding of our sports franchises and other U.S. and foreign franchises," Swindal said. Yomiuri Shimbun owns the Yomiuri Giants baseball team. It also owns the largest circulation newspaper in the world, which bears the name of the parent company. Copyright 2003 The Star-Ledger.
