Re: How did Wang Not Know He Was Pitching a Perfect Game?

Wang, "I was concentrating on throwing strikes the whole time. It really hadn't cross my mind. After we got through 8, though, when Posada told me, then I realized."
Reporter, "Awww, come on."
Wang, "It really hadn't!" (That was the best an apparantly exsperated Wang could muster.)

That's about all I've read on his response for this. Can't speak for him. Either you take his word for it or not, I guess.

If there were a way to find out for sure, I would bet a lot of money that he knew what was going on.

Look at his facial expression after giving up the HR, it looks more like "ok, so I gave up one run - no big deal". I would have expected it, had he known, that he would break into a kind of sheepish smile as if, "oh well, I tried (not to give up a hit) and it was a good ride while it lasted" kind of of expression.

I believe that he didn't know he had a PG going as I was a little perflexed with his reaction then. Now it makes sense. Those who think he does not show emotion to 'big events', remember how he reacted when he gave up a 2-run dinger to Washington in the 9th inning of a CG loss last year?

I agree. Why is it so hard for some people to see that for him to be aware he has a perfect game going, he would have to consciously be realizing that he hadn't allowed a hit? If he was focusing intensely on the present and not thinking about it, I can easily see him not realizing.

I didn't realize it until it was mentioned to me in the 7th. So what?

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

Guys, give it a rest. Like I said before, it REALLY DOESN'T MATTER if he knew that he was pitching a perfect game or not. If you believe him, fine. If you don't, that's fine too. Just let it go, especially you, MattMan. There's no need getting all bent out of shape over something so insignificant.

Wang must've been so happy today when he found out Clemens was going to be on the same team as him. I wonder what Clemens can do for Wang and if Wang can actually be BETTER this year somehow because of Clemens' presence. It will be a very interesting June-October...

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

I appreciate Chien-Ming Wang, for being one helluva pitcher. Showing no emotion shows that Wang is seriously locked in the game when he takes the mound, and blocks out anything else that would be prevent him from pitching his best.

That, my friends, is a great quality to have. I'm glad this kid is the ace of the pitching staff. When Clemens comes down and starts to get involved with the team, I wonder what he will discuss and do with Chien.

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

Before the game, Wang said his goal was to go deep into the game, he couldn't have done it if he was getting hit a lot. And with his nail-polish-glued fingertip, he didn't know what to expect but simply to focus on each pitch he throws. After the game, he told all the reporters he was happy y being able to achieve his goal: Go deep into the game. And that was his main concern. I just think he's not good at multi-tasking, that's all.
And heck, if it would make people happy, let's say that Wang knew he was going for the PG, and that's why he got nervous so he gave up the homerun.

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

Just read this from one of our local news:

Quote:
Wang chose to sign with the Yankee back in 2000 largely because of Clemens, his idol, who was at the time playing for the club. And he worked hard in the hopes that he might get to be teammates with the man someday. "He's been my only idol since I was in college. What I admired the most was his dominance. Whatever he threw, he threw with confidence," said Wang. "Around 2002-2003 ST, I had the opportunity to meet him in person, but then he went to another ball club, and I've never met him again since."
Wang regards Clemens' fast splitter as his best pitch. Now that they're teammates, any plan on picking up a new arsenal?
To this, Wang chuckles and said, "I think I still have some honing to do with my sinkers."
Obviously excited with the news, Wang was quick to don his idol "The Spiritual Leader" of the team. And playing with someone with a status like that is nothing short of blissfulness for Wang.
When asked if he felt threatened as Ace of the staff, Wang smiled sheepishily and said, "I'm no Ace!"

have heard that he calls it a forkball but it's basically a splitter.

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

wang is fast becoming my favourite pitcher in the major leagues. i love wtahcing him pitch, partly cos he's a sinkerballer who gets groundballs (always loved consistency and efficiency over strikeouts and high pitch counts).

i also love that he is so emotionally detached. people say this yankee team needs more passion but if everyone was more like wang and rivera, we'd kill everyone.

focus.

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

i'm pretty sure wang was using a different version of 'knew' in reference to the no hitter.

he knew it, but wasn't dwelling on it or letting it stay in the front of his mind.

that's my guess anyway.

something's lost in translation.

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

Want might of not known the tradition of the perfect game where all his team mates stays away from him, besides, he pretty much keeps to himself most of the time so he might not notice people around him are not there...

I thought he might meet with seattle again this weekend but guess they bumped him up to meet with the Rangers... it be nice to see him against Seattle again... too bad...

Re: Chien-Ming Wang Appreciation Thread

Hey guys, I’m a big Wang fan and I noticed he is doing something new in his last outing (the 7 1/3 perfect inning game).

I don’t know if you guys notice or not, but when Dick-K pitch in Boston, everytime before he pitch, he use his right hand to wipe his neck, hair, face etc and then use a distinctive technique to wipe the same hand all over the baseball. I think the idea is to use his body sweet to make the surface of ball more moist / sticky, so when he pitches he can spin the ball better.

Now, I see Wang doing exactly the same thing in his last outing (the hand gesture work on the baseball is the same). Did Wang pick this technique up just recently or he is doing it since a long time ago?
