Great Yankee photos

My Brooklyn Dodger fan dude is speaking to me again, at least by way of posting Yankee pix. A long drought, but here are some of the better ones.

(check the famous Yankee and you'll recognize his name (hint: he once wore #6 for a year))

Lou Gehrig gently encouraging Babe Dahlgren in the dugout before Dahlgren replaced him as the Yankees' first baseman in Detroit. Gehrig removed himself from the lineup, snapping his consecutive-games-played streak at 2,130.

Passing the torch.

Joe, Mickey and Teddy, 1951.

Brooklyn Dodgers 3B coach, 1938

Boston Braves coach (undated)

Re: Great Yankee photos

"New York centerfielder Mickey Mantle makes a leaping pose for photographers during Yankee Workout at Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, in New York Sept 27. Mickey tested his injured right leg and announced he did not think he would be ready for the World Series which opens at Yankee Stadium, New York, Sept 28. 'I'm not hopeful of playing in the Series - at least in the first game or two at Yankee Stadium,' Mickey said. He said, although it doesn't interfere with his hitting, the injury hurts when he runs." Mantle's assessment of his injury proved correct, as he did not play in Games 1 and 2, which, ironically, were both won by the Yankees".

"Where money is involved, so, too, are deceit and dishonesty—even when it involves the simplest of pleasures and time-honored traditions. And quite unfortunately, the truth is seldom (if ever) revealed. Take, for instance, the world-renowned "Baby Ruth" candy bar. Introduced in 1921 by the Curtiss Candy Company, this tasty 5-cent (half the price of its candy-aisle contemporaries) chocolate bar was assumed by the masses to be a celebration of the New York Yankees' Babe Ruth—a 1920 acquisition whose rise to baseball prominence was, at the time, underway at a meteoric rate. Eventually noticing the chewy treat's incredible popularity, Ruth demanded royalties for the obvious use of his name. Curtiss, however, countered with the argument that its product had been named for Ruth Cleveland—the daughter of former U.S. President Grover Cleveland. The implausible aspect of that claim was that Ruth Cleveland, born in 1891, died in 1904—a full 12 years before Curtiss Candy had even opened! Accepting the curious explanation, by 1930, Ruth produced his own candy bar, "Ruth's Home Run Candy." But shortly after it hit the shelves, Curtiss persuaded the patent office to turn Ruth down, arguing that the similarities of the products' names would cause "confusion." Consequently halted from marketing his sweets, Ruth barked to Curtiss, "Well, I ain't eatin' your damned candy bar anymore." the Babe himself tossing samples of his short-lived product into the Yankee Stadium right-field bleachers".

He's strangely got a grandson who's a Yankee fan. I say strange, since, as they've enlightened me, every single Yankee loss is a good thing for Brooklyn. In fact, they cheered Mo's loss and last October, they were all jubilant as if it were 1955 (guess who they beat?).

Still, it took the help of the Brooklyn Mod to figure him out, so even if we're not "speaking", at least he's posting on the NYY forum on the other board. He'd previous put up some awesome shots of the Mick, but under the "History" forum, when he was mad at me.

Long story, but but it's between him "tolerating" me or "angry" at me; there's never any "like" (nor any love lost, apparently). Very long story.

The Brooklyn Dodger fan who'd posted this was asked a question as to whether or not that was the ame Bob Turley that pitched for the Yanks. He replied that it wasn't, and someone else posted their DOB and cities of birth:

Robert Lee Turley, Born On: 09-19-1930
Born In: Troy, Illinois

Mickey was born 10-20-31, in Spavinaw Oklahoma

Here are a few others:

Re: Great Yankee photos

You're welcome. My friend has a very discerning eye. I use the term "friend" loosely, since we're not buddies, but he's gotten over his dislike of me, so he's offering many goodies, much to the appreciation of Yankee fans.

Re: Great Yankee photos

My apologies to the dial-up users, since thes pix must take forever to load.

For the "Tarzan" pic of Lou earlier, my Brooklyn Dodger fan source gave this:

"Director, D. Ross Lederman, perhaps flubbed a chance for a gate bonanza when he chose not to cast Gehrig. Having undergone a screen test for Lederman's production of Tarzan's Revenge, Gehrig was passed over for the lead role in favor of Glenn Morris. A decathlon Gold Medalist during the 1936 Munich Olympic Games, Morris became the fourth Olympic athlete to portray Tarzan (Johnny Weissmuller, Buster Crabbe and Herman Brix preceded him). Incidentally, another Olympian—swimmer Eleanor Holm—was cast by Lederman as "Jane." Turns out that Morris' "Revenge" was enough; he was not to appear in another film, thus making his movie portfolio about as lengthy as Gehrig's".

Re: Great Yankee photos

Anybody know who this guy is? Ruth called him the "All American out", amongst other things.

Here's a few more from the 50s & 60s:

Who is this guy? ^^

The All American Out could be Leo "The Lip" Durocher.

Thanks. I'm embarrassed at not knowing. When you're in the middle of a discussion between one guy who's 70 and another in his late 80s, you can easily realize how little you know.

Thanks. I'll try finding out more about this. However, I thought that Durocher was known for managing the Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Giants (as well as the Cubs and Astros), not wearing a Yankee uni. In fact, he never played in the bigs.
