Sinking feeling about Jaret Wright
I think Pavano is worth nowhere near the deal he got, but I expect him to win at least 14 games in the AL East.
However with Jaret Wright, not to sound like a bridge jumper, but am I the only one who absolutely feels that he will be a certain bust? Is there any reason at this point to actually feel encouraged about this acquisition? |

Re: Sinking feeling about Jaret Wright
I have faith in each of our recently acquired pitchers, they both seem ready for the big time also known as "Da Bronx". They're used to the spotlight now because they spent last season creating it for themselves along with their former teams. I believe their momentum from last season could only push them farther, although I won't say that Jaret Wright will eat innings to make way for the pen, I do believe he will be an effective pitcher.

I know you arent trying to sound like one but you do sound like a bridge jumper. Our rotation is leaps and bounds better than what we had last year. If you are worried about this rotation I would have hated to hear what you thought last year. Who would you rather have than pavano? Clement? Perez? Pavano is better than both of them. As for wright is he really that bad for a fourth strarter? I dont think so. |

Re: Sinking feeling about Jaret Wright
From Ken Rosenthal:
... The Yankees have drawn criticism within the industry for signing free-agent RHP Jaret Wright to a three-year, $21 million contract, but his former pitching coach with the Braves, Leo Mazzone, believes Wright will build on 2004, when he went 15-8 with a 3.28 ERA. "Why can't he do it again? Why would anyone question it?" Mazzone says. "I wish we still had him. And if I had him this year, I'd make the straight change more of a factor to take him to a higher level." |

Nervous about wright? Why? The guy was very good last year. Granted, he was pitching for a team with a coaching staff renowned for taking mediocre pitchers and getting a great season or two out of them. Sure, it was his first very good season ever. And while the guy has battled injury problems for most of his career he started 32 games last year averaging nearly 6 whole inning a start. What's to worry about? 7 mil a year is a bargain. |

Re: Sinking feeling about Jaret Wright
Not worried one bit. I was a proponent of getting Wright long before we signed him. The only feelings I have about him are those memories of him being lights-out against us in 97. All this Mazzone talk bothers me - what, is he going to wake up at ST and forget everything Leo taught him? He'll be fine, I think Pavano has more pressure on him than Wright.

I think Pavano, while effective, was overpaid and as it turns out necessary, and I have legitimate concerns about Jaret Wright (though I don't recall at any point indicating that our season hangs in the balance of a fourth starter.) I hardly think that qualifies as bridge-jumping, but.. hey, that's cool. As for Pavano, in my opinion, yes, I would have much rather had Matt Clement, especially at that $$/duration. That's my opinion, it may not be somebody else's. |

Too late now to worry. Let's just hope everything will happen for the best. I for one think the starting 5 is much better than last year and Torre will carry the 7 relievers to start the season. Plus pushing RJ to the top of the rotation makes Moose and Pavano so much better as a 2 and 3, even from their own mental perspectives. |

The problem is, the Braves only offered him 3 mil a year. I wouldn't expect Mazzone to trash the guy as he walks out the door. What's he gonna say? "Leo, do you think Wright can repeat his '04" "Probably not without me around. He was a fluke." |

I have a floating feeling about him, so that should balance everything out.

It could be an example of mere puffery, or it could be a deeply held conviction; who knows? That Mazzone specifically mentions the straight change tends to indicate that it may be the later. |

I'm hoping that Neil Allen makes a difference. With Mel leaving at the end of next season, perhaps they'll let Allen have more input. I'm sure that the Tampa faction will be pushing for that, also. |

Re: Sinking feeling about Jaret Wright
I'm not as worried about Mussina or Wright this year, because they are the Number 3 and Number 4 starters. They will have room to breathe. If they get in a jam, the bullpen will not be supremely worn out when Joe wags the finger for them. They can just pitch. I will be cheering hard for Pavano, Mussina, and Wright, simply because they are not getting the kind of attention RJ is getting, and they deserve our support at all times.

I saw clement pitch a couple of times last year and when the going got tough he started walking people. That is the last thing we need playing the O's or the Sox. Maybe its blinders but I saw pavano pitch a complete game shutout in Wrigley last year in Sept and I cant stop thinking of him doing that next year. Pavano will have a better year than clement...write it down. |

Mussina is the number 3?! I seriously honestly do NOT UNDERSTAND the absolute lack of respect Mussina gets around here.Pavano on his best day cannot carry Mussina's jock. Please. One good year and he's better than Mussina already? Pavano is a career 100 ERA+ pitcher. Exactly average. |
