The Yankees move to WWOR!

The Yankees, starting next season, will move back to WWOR, Channel 9. YES will still produce the broadcasts.

Here's the link:

Wow, thanks for the link .

Being FOX-owned, I was really worried until I got to the last sentence.

That's interesting news. When did WWOR become a Fox affilliate? Didn't they use to be a UPN affilliate?

I don't know much about the technicalities of the whole thing, but channel 9 is branded a UPN affiliate. UPN is owned by Fox. So it's not a FOX affiliate, per se.

But there is some cross-connection between the two. I've seen Channel 9 carry the Fox News Channel feed for breaking news events, presidential addresses, etc.

It sort of makes sense that they would switch as it would screw up network shows.

Actually, UPN the network is owned by CBS/Viacom. Your local UPN station may or may not be owned by Fox.

In other news, average daily viewership of UPN has lept from 13 to whatever number of people watch Yankee games.

So true... but they've had sports before, they were the long time host of the Yankees back in the day, so this is nothing new for them. They really don't have anything on the primetime schedule excpet for Thursday night (WWE) so this is wecome for them.

Interesting. Yanks on Channel 9, Mets on Channel 11, talk about reversal of roles!

The problem that UPN had was -- and is -- that their shows never have audiences that follow.

For instance, NBC's Thursday night was built on audiences following Cosby into another show, into Cheers, and into two more shows.

UPN had a history of great premiere nights and nobody following the show for the rest of the season.

Moesha? Lots of people watched it... nobody else watched the other shows that were advertised during Moesha.

Buffy? Lots of Buffy fans followed the show to UPN but carefully avoided anything else on the network.

WWF/WWE? TONS of viewers. But why would they watch anything else on the network?

I'm not sure what they can do to keep viewer retention.... other than really concentrate on one niche audience. I don't care if it's "urban," sci-fi, or young males. Pick one and stick with it....

But now you have their biggest media market going with the Yankees. The second biggest media market (LA) handles baseball, too. I wonder if the network will try to tap into that. Nah... too tough to figure out what the urban blue-state baseball fan likes. Too many contradictions.

The only UPN series I watched regularly was "Dilbert". People hated that show but I thought it was dryly amusing like the strip.

But again, I'd watch it and split. Yankee games will defininitely bring them more viewers than usual. I never liked the way Ch.2 used the Yankee games as a way to promote theire newscasts anyway.

Ok.. sorry if I'm a little slow here...

Does this mean all UPN's in NY will cover the game? When CBS2 carried the game it airred on my local FOX station (I loved the WXXA Yankees baseball commericals)... I wonder if they'll switch over to UPN in Albany too?

Is it any more or less wierd that it was seeing Met games on Channel 11? That's always like Bizzarro World to me!
