Charlie Steiner HAS to go.
Every night I take an hour or so walk/jog on the boardwalk to try to shed a few pounds.
I bring along a portable radio to listen to the game (when one is being played). The Yankee Broadcast on radio is poor for many reasons. Some are: 1 - The same commercials over & over between innings. 2 - There is an annoying advertisement for anything that can occur in and around the game. The 15th out, the pitch speed, a double play, the time of the game, a call to the bullpen (I could go on & on). 3 - Sterling's act after all these years has worn shamefully thin. 4 - The complete non chemistry between the announcers. Example, one will say something & the other will say the exact same thing a moment later as if it has never been uttered. but... by far the worst aspect of the radio broadcasts is Charlie Steiner. He is awful and is getting worse. He botches calls, gives misinformation, stumbles over his words. He is the worst baseball announcer I've heard in my 38 years of following many levels of baseball(this includes Suzyn Waldman). When he does play-by-play he is at his worst. Tonight during one inning (while doing play-by-play) the following was uttered by Chas: 1 - Edgar Martinez is 2 for 2 today and was robbed of a base hit. 2 - (This is radio, remember ) Flaherty squares to bunt...pause... Eh......(pause)....ahh, (pause)....he, (pause)... it, (pause.....pause....pause)... it may have, (pause)...I think there may have been a missed sign, (another long pause)... Matsui...(pause) Then mercifully Sterling stepped in and told what had happened 3 or 4 minutes ago. 3 - And Bernie Wilson is on 2nd. I nearly tossed my radio in the Atlantic Ocean. I'm sure Charlie is a nice guy & I enjoyed him on Sports Center, and before that doing radio sorts updates. But, he does not belong in a radio booth announcing a baseball game, certainly not for the Yankees. I see countless posts with people complaining about Michael Kay on this Forum. Steiner deserves 10 times as many similar posts. (rant over & I actually feel a little better ) |

Bernie Wilson
I certainly nearly fell out of my chair when I heard that.
Seek Bernie Wilson, he's a darn good contact hitter. While Michael Kay seems to overdescribe the details, Steiner doesn't describe enough for radio. |

You're right. It's hard to descibe how bad Steiner is without flaming him.

That's worse than Tom Seaver referring to our All Star Catcher as Jose Posada. |

I'm not trying to hijack the thread but Kay has to go before Steiner does. At least 4 times tonight while I was attempting to cook dinner I threw sh*t down and ran to the TV to see the hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh deeeeeeeeeeeeeeep ball (caught by the catcher as a foul tip

What, you mean you dont like the Foxwoods Casino commercial?
Thats my favorite. At least you dont see the Levitra commercial. And who do you want to replace him with? The answer of "anybody" is not acceptable. Give me a name that we have all heard of. |

Friday night, Steiner said the Red Sox were opening up a weekend series with the Blue Jays. The two teams had played Thursday night.

So let's get Kay and Sterling back together on the radio...where they had great success. Send Steiner to TV where he knows what he's doing. |

It is time to get on with life and forget the sour grapes."

Yes foxwoods. All the freaking time with foxwoods. How about my new least fav commercial on the radio this year? "Where do you think you're going young lady? You're not leaving the house with those 2 skimpy signal bars on your phone!" Ugggghhh. |

I'm not sure if I heard it right or not but during one of the first few innings I could've sworn that I heard him say it was a 2-2-2 count.

Funny. I hear them and I don't mind. It's our own Sox announcers on radio that drive me crazy. They are nice guys but their voices grate, especially Joe Castiglione's.
We used to have GREAT announcers in Boston, chainsmoking crazyman Johnny Most for the Celts, Ken Coleman, Ned Martin, Jon Miller, etc. for the Sox, the spectacular Bob Wilson for the Bruins -- maybe the best announcer I've ever heard (and I'm not really a hockey buff). The only really good ones we have now are the Patriots' Gil Santos (superb) and Gino Cappeletti. Trade me Steiner or Sterling for Castiglione. Please. I'll throw in Cesar Crespo too. ![]() |
