Veterans Committee elects Bill Mazeroski, Hilton Smith to Hall
March 6, 2001

TAMPA, FLORIDA (TICKER) -- The wait is over for Bill Mazeroski.

After being bypassed for nearly 25 years, Mazeroski was the lone former major leaguer elected to the Hall of Fame on Tuesday by the Veterans' Committee.

A five-time All-Star, Mazeroski is best known for hitting the dramatic ninth-inning home run in Game Seven to win the 1960 World Series for the Pittsburgh Pirates over the New York Yankees.

One of the finest defensive second baseman in the history of the game, he won eight Gold Gloves and was especially adept at turning the double play. However, his lifetime average was only .260.

"You never dream of this, it has been pretty exciting, I hope I can live up to this," said Mazeroski. "It was something I never expected."

Hilton Smith, who spent 13 years in the Negro Leagues, was also elected by the 14-man committee

Maz is certainly a starter in an all star game, but no way is he a HOF player. And the travestry continues. They are diluting the talent in the HOF. Next we will have Willy Miranda in also.

YAAAAAWN.....excuse me I almost fell asleep there for a second. If Maz can make the cut maybe they should ove the Hall of Fame to west Texas or New Mexico. We have plenty of open space for the 2 million square feet display building that I assume the Hall of Fame comitee must anticipate building. It will be nice to walk through a place like that and see pictures of 40% of all the major leaguers that ever played the game. I guess they will rent us each a motor scooter to make the three day journey through the new "hall".

On the more serious side, I am glad that Hilton got in. The Negro league players were ignored for too many years.

What has become of the HOF? I thought you had to be a great baseball plyer to get in there. Mazeroski does not belong there. Sorry! There are so many great ballplayers still waiting to be chosen. WOW. What a joke

Yeah he was a defensive second baseman, but I think he's making it largely on the basis of that one home run in the '60 series. Check this out. Look at Yogi's kisser. What do you think was going through his mind? heehee

Seriously, if they let a .260 hitter like Maz in is there hope for a guy like Roger Maris, whom I think, deserves it more that Maz?

I think Yogi STILL wants that pitch back !!!

I think within the next 10 years people will be inducted because they were "just nice guys" ... So what if they only batted .260 !!! They were fun to have around the dugout !!!

I think we can safely assume that Maz's "special coach" duties do not fall in the conditioning realm.

The other HOF'ers in the pic sure have dubious looks on their mugs.

Also to the point: who the hell is Ernie Harwell??

Maz does not belong. Oh well!!! Life goes on and it gets easier to get into the hall. Somethings wrong. It shouldn't be this way. &po'd&

A travesty! Although it's easier for Donnie to get in down the road

Ernie Harwell is a HOF broadcaster who always calls the Yankees the "New Yorks." It drives me nuts when he does that. I don't know if any of you remember "Carolina Chop", but he picked up on that and was calling the Yankees the "New Yorks." That is until the "New Yorks" blew out the "Atlantas."

One more thing. Mazeroski's highest percentage in HOF voting when his name was on the ballot was 42%. This selection is a joke.
