Paul Quantrill?!?!?
From Newsday
"Free-agent righthander Tom Gordon has agreed to a two-year, $7-million deal to become a Yankees' setup man, as first reported by ESPN, and righthander Paul Quantrill is leaning toward accepting a two-year offer for about $6 million, according to a person familiar with Quantrill's thinking. Furthermore, lefthander Felix Heredia, who decided last month not to exercise a $1.7-million player option for 2004, will return to the Yankees for a two-year deal worth roughly $3.5 million, as first reported by the Newark Star-Ledger. " Paul Quantrill?!? I really don't want him. |

Very good signing if he comes to the Yankees.

From the article:

Why would signing Quantrill preclude them from signing White? Will Hammond and Heredia be the only LH relievers. Or will Rhodes be signed and Hammond traded? |

I hope White is coming back. The only problem with Quantrill is that he doesn't strike out a lot of guys. |

If Gordon signs, I doubt Quantrill is coming aboard.
Rivera, Karsay, Gordon, AND Quantrill???? Not likely. It would be awesome if they could sign Rhodes from the left side. |

Ok, maybe I've changed my mind. But how many guys do we need in the bullpen?
Mo Karsay Hammond Quantrill Heredia Flash Weaver (if he doesn't start, which it looks like he won't) |

from the espn stats page on him:
"Quantrill not only wants the ball every day, he needs to pitch on a regular basis in order to be effective." if torre gets his hands on him, he'll have trouble i guess ![]() |

A-Rod is already in the bank. They got Quantrill for his sinker & ground balls so he can give Jeter and A-Rod a great chance at gold gloves. ![]() |

Dam his era the last 7 years for the most part has been very, very good. I wouldn't mind having this guy on the team if there is room for him. |

How many will Torre use regularly? If Mo stays healthy, chances are many of these pitchers are going to be very unhappy at some point in the season. |

if karsay comes back healthy and returns to form, that's three top notch setup guys we'll have in him, gordon, and quantrill. it looks like our front office is well on its way to turning what was a weakness last year into a strength.

as the opponent, I'd much rather see a yanks pen of white and heredia than gordon and quantrill (lefty v righty aside, as that depends on the rest of the pen's makeup) |

The problem is that Torre isn't good at getting a lot of relievers regular work.

This is a good move
As many here know, I have advocated for a groundball reliever for some time. I originally pushed for Hasegawa, but I'll take Quantrill. He was very successful with Toronto over a number of years, which does indicate that he will not have NL hangover.
I think the signing will balance out the pen. With Gordon, you have the RHP K guy. With Karsay, you have the RHP innings/set-up guy. With Quantrill, you have the RHP hroundball guy. If you think in past terms, consider Gordon to replace Nelson, Quantrill replaces Mendoza and Karsay is the pre 1997 Rivera guy. Add to it a couple of LHP, and there is some solid potential. Heredia is the LOOGY that every team needs. Hammond may not be long for NY- his role is duplicative of Heredia's efforts. Maybe White comes back, maybe they get Rhodes. With Rhodes or White, you replace the old Stanton role. The bullpen looks better than it has in at least 3 years. Now, about that rotation... |

With the Yankees current defensive alignment, groundball pithers are a poor fit.
