Re: Hideki Matsui Performance Thread

Hideki Matsui does not strike fear into teams anyone, back in 2003 and 2004, this guy was the most feared hitter in our lineup. His numbers the last 2 years against Boston have been awful, and he doesn't seem to get the big hits he use to. I don't know if it is his wrist or just getting older or what it is, but hes not the same guy we are use to.

Eyes Brigade have moved on from Abreu and on to Matsui.

He looked horrible in that at-bat against Steve Kline. A guy who throws an 88 mph fastball and an average slider. The guy who pitched so badly that even Baltimore was eager to get rid of him. I guess striking out was better than a double play, but he needs to be able to hit a sac fly.

Matsui often gets a free pass around here....and Im not quite sure why. Everyone is quick to point out when ARod, Jeter, Abreu, Jorge or anyone else doesnt perform up to their level.

Matsui flies under the radar

Re: Hideki Matsui Performance Thread

I'm gonna hope it's still a matter of recovering from the wrist injury. I don't want to pile on the guy but I haven't had much confidence in him this year (always expecting him to roll over and ground out to 2nd).

Still, only a week ago the guy had his average up to .300. Just had a bad week.

I do not care for his fielding. He'd be a nice DH. Got spoiled by Melky in LF last year.

Hard to believe that in 2005 Matsui hit .354 (.972 OPS) against LHP, compared to .281 (.809 OPS) against RHP. This season he's doing terrible against LHP.

He had a .788 OPS in 2003, which actually put him .013 behind the not-so-feared Raul Mondesi. He's a good hitter, but except for 2004, really nothing special.

I think he probably meant 2004 and 2005. He was still adjusting to the league in 03.

I have noticed that too and it is puzzling. Don't get me wrong I love Matsui and think he is a good player, but for some reason no one ever talks about him when he is not performing well.

Re: Hideki Matsui Performance Thread

Matsui was asked to get a sac fly. these are his numbers with a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs:
.417/.389/.583/.972

and why his his OBP lower than his BA? sac flys, of course

edit: also 16 RBIs in 12 ABs

I think it's because he's very consistent and not someone people pay much attention to. He's not the hot shot 2nd baseman, not the vet catcher who's suddenly hitting like crazy, he's not A-Rod who probably gets the most scrutiny of all. He's just consistent old Hideki (and he doesn't usually fail to hit with runners on). He might go through a week long slump, but then he's back to being a good player. Not a great player but good. That's why he goes unnoticed most of the time, IMO.

Its basically just Matsui and Posada that the majority of fans just seem to always tolerate. Maybe its because when the team is playing well, they arent really part of the group that will get the media headlines. Therefore they come across as selfless heroes.

None of this means he should be above criticism when he fails to perform

He's not, and I didn't say that. I was responding to why he flies under the radar. Although I will say that if he did fail a lot in situations with RISP, then he'd be much more open to criticism, but the fact that he succeeds often (especially with a runner on 3rd <2 out) makes me shrug my shoulders and say "He can't do it every time." That's not to say that he can't be criticized, it's just my view on what he did there.
