And I think JVIS is wondering if the general attitude problem ever contributed negatively on the field of play. (At least in his tenure here, as opposed to years ago).

Is this true? I look at his numbers and I see a guy who had 71 great innings at AA (in his third year at that level) but who has been pretty mediocre everywhere else. He's always had control issues and even in his one good year his walks were too high. If I had to guess at his upside, I'd say it looks more like Brian Bruney than Phil Hughes.

Maybe I'm biased because I wish we still had Sheff -- you could count on him for fire and backbone, two things this team sorely lacks -- but I don't understand the unbridled optimism people have for Sanchez.

1. His walk rate has improved every year since 2003.

2. His stuff is off the charts, 92-95 mph fastball with sick movement, plus hammer (sometimes even plus-plus), above average slider (has hit 90 mph with it) and a developing changeup.

3. He has the body type to become an innings eater at the major league level.

4. Most pitchers come back even stronger after TJ surgery.

Im not ready to count out Humberto, he has all the tools to become a very special pitcher.

Actually, I don't care. He tanked on his team - whether he actually threw a ball away or not is irrelevant, he tanked on his team - and I don't care how long ago it was. To me, that's unforgivable baseball behavior (it has nothing to do with him as a person, only as a player). I'd rather lose without him.

And it's not like his attitude has changed all that much: "If I'm not happy, you don't want me on your team."

I'm not sure how true this is, but I read on NYYFans dot com that the Yankees might be trading Basak for Santana (the pitcher from the Twins).

No way we give up Basak w/o Mauer too.

I think number 4 is highly debateable, "most" seems like quite an exaggeration. I'm having a hard time thinking of any really. They might be "stronger" but are they the same pitcher or nearly as effective. There might be anecdotal evidence, but I doubt its a trend. Maybe they were more effective in comparison to when they were pitching injured but before that?

That's really the thing of it. I read an interview with a surgeon who does the operation and he said they can't make you into the bionic man -- the ideal result (not always achieved) is that you come close to the level you were before the injury.

The thing is that you can be injured for a long time before the ligament tears completely. During that time you'll gradually lose velocity, so a guy with a 95 MPH arm might only be hitting 88 when he finally goes under the knife. If he comes back throwing 92, yeah, he's better than when you last saw him, but still a notch below his original ability.

Well the best example of a guy being stronger and much better after TJ surgery is a man called Mariano Rivera.

I wonder what it would take to get Carlos Quentin from the Diamondbacks. They just demoted him and with Upton tearing up AA, I wonder if he would be expendable.

Mariano had TJ surgery? I know he had some kind of elbow surgery in the minors but I didn't realize that was what it was.

I said that because word around the league is that pitchers come back stronger after TJ not just because of the surgery itself, but because of the workout regimen Dr. Andrews puts his clients into... in fact Mr. Horne (74nole, Alanīs dad) who hangs around the minor league forum, also mentioned this (Alan had TJ surgery in 03), he said that some people actually think that what makes guys come back stronger itīs not the ligament replacent itself, but the workout regimen Dr. Andrews puts his clients into.

Heīs not going anywhere, but if we were to trade him to the Angels I wouldnīt expect anything less than this package in return:

- Ervin Santana or Nick Adenhart
- Brandon Wood
- Hank Conger
