Re: The Joe Torre Discussion Thread
Shouldn't have pinch run for Jason. Other than that, Joe managed fine.
Perhaps if Mo had pitched in those tie games, he'd be in better form. Who knows. |

Im not saying he lost the game....but there is no excuse for him repeating the same mistake of removing Giambi over and over and over again |

Re: The Joe Torre Discussion Thread
Giambi should have never been pinch ran for in the 8th. True, it was a 4 run game, but you need your hottest hitter in the game until the game is a blow out even if you have a 4 run lead. The Red Sox will not go away very easy.

Don't go crazy now suggesting Farnsworth. I agree though about Viz - I said the same thing and he was overused for a few weeks -- he shouln't have pitched..I was hoping for Bruney...As for Mo, Torre should have gotten him work somehow in that last series... |

He produces a lot more weakly ground balls. Not a manager in the game doesn't bring his infield in this situation. If you had a runner at first, you can debateit but not in this case. The pen imploded. It was due. It is a good bullpen but it wasn't as good as it had been. I agree with Big E, Mo isn't getting enough work but this place would have gone nuts if Joe had pitched Rivera in any of the three Cleveland games. |

But why were Myers and Viz even in there. What happened to Proctor and Farnsworth...our 8th inning pitchers? |

Re: The Joe Torre Discussion Thread
the only problem I have with Torre was taking out Giambi, he HAS to stop doing that, he has been burned by that more then once

Re: The Joe Torre Discussion Thread
If you're so uncomfortable with a 4-run lead in the 8th that you need to bring in your closer, then you shouldn't be pinch running for Giambi when you very well could be needing his bat later in the game.

I don't think Viz is comfortable with his fastball because he's been used a lot early in the season in cold weather and his arm is probably a little tired...after yesterday's performance, it was idiotic to bring him into this game...Bruney should have gotten the call.. |

Why wasn't Mientkiewicz guarding the line when the LH Crisp was up? With Varitek on 1st, it looked like Doug was playing behind him anyways.

Re: The Joe Torre Discussion Thread
Has Mike Myers successfully retired David Ortiz? The answer?
No, he hasn’t, which just makes him even more useless. I can’t recall ONE TIME that he has come in and done the job that we signed him to do. He was the “Ortiz Killer” but every gosh darn time he comes in against Ortiz, Ortiz hits him. Pinch running for Giambi with a four run lead? WITH A FOUR RUN LEAD AGAINST YOUR RIVALS!? Bringing in Vizciano, a day after he threw 33 pitches and had a rough outing? Is he trying to destroy his arm? Bringing the infield in for Rivera, who does nothing but give up those little dinky hits to the outfield? Remember Game 7 of I don’t know, the 2001 World Series? Remember EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU BRING THE INFIELD IN WHEN RIVERA IS ON THE MOUND. And then he has the guts to let Kevin Thompson, a guy who has had maybe one at bat in two weeks, hit in a situation when the game is on the line, and you have Phelps who kills lefty pitching, was brought in FOR SITUATIONS LIKE THIS, and has gotten on a little streak (two for four two days ago, and then a HR yesterday) as of late? I know it’s April, but no game in April has ever gotten me this mad. Ever. |

Thank-freaking-you. Do you really think that the marginal benefit of having someone however much faster than Giambi RUN and potentially score (when realistically you still have the weaker hitters on the team coming up in Nieves, Melky, Mint-K and you need them to somehow get the runner home) is greater than the marginal benefit of Giambi to the lineup, then you should pull him. There's no way this is the case. I'm just looking for one particular instance where this has helped the Yankees! I can only think of one instance in the last few years where it has worked at ALL! Dave Roberts in 2004, but they didn't remove one of their BIG SLUGGERs. Francona would never pinch run for JD Drew. I just don't get it. |
