The NFL: Week# 6

WEEK 6

DPR: Defensive Passer Rating
YPA: Offense Passing Yards Per Attempt (includes sacks and yds lost)
RI: Run Index (The AVG rankings of 3 run metrics: Rush YDS Per Game, the combination of Rush TDs & Rush 1stDs, and YPC. For example: if a team ranks 4th in Rush YDS/Game, 5th in TDs & 1stDs, and 12th in YPC, that team will have a Run Index of 7.00)
DRI: Run Index (defense)

Sunday, Oct. 15

Buffalo at Detroit 1:00 p.m.
When the Bills have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Buffalo 17.00 (16th)
DRI: Detroit 7.67 (7th)
Advantage: Detroit
Passing:
YPA: Buffalo 5.24 (24th)
DPR: Detroit 115.1 (32nd)
Advantage: Buffalo
When the Lions have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Detroit 29.00 (T-31st)
DRI: Buffalo 21.67 (20th)
Advantage: Buffalo
Passing:
YPA: Detroit 5.73 (19th)
DPR: Buffalo 85.3 (21st)
Advantage: EVEN
Intangibles: The Bills are coming off an embarrassing loss at Chicago, but they are a better team than that 40-7 loss would indicate. The Lions are a mess.
Bills 24-10

Carolina at Baltimore 1:00 p.m.
When the Panthers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Carolina 11.33 (T-12th)
DRI: Baltimore 2.00 (1st)
Advantage: Baltimore
Passing:
YPA: Carolina 5.02 (29th)
DPR: Baltimore 52.0 (1st)
Advantage: Baltimore
When the Ravens have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Baltimore 25.67 (T-28th)
DRI: Carolina 21.00 (19th)
Advantage: Carolina
Passing:
YPA: Baltimore 4.90 (30th)
DPR: Carolina 81.1 (16th)
Advantage: Carolina
Intangibles: The Ravens have benefited from a strong defense and a soft schedule. After his 3-INT performance on MNF, expect the Ravens to play a conservative offensive game. Steve Smith's hamstring problems have affected Carolina's passing metrics. If Smith is finally close to 100%, Baltimore will have their hands full this Sunday.
Ravens 17-16

Cincinnati at Tampa Bay 1:00 p.m.
When the Bengals have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Cincinnati 14.00 (14th)
DRI: Tampa Bay 30.33 (T-31st)
Advantage: Cincinnati
Passing:
YPA: Cincinnati 5.99 (15th)
DPR: Tampa Bay 89.0 (23rd)
Advantage: Cincinnati
When the Buccaneers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Tampa Bay 25.00 (T-26th)
DRI: Cincinnati 28.00 (29th)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: Tampa Bay 5.27 (23rd)
DPR: Cincinnati 62.5 (6th)
Advantage: Cincinnati
Intangibles: QB Bruce Gradkowski had a stellar debut with the Bucs (107.6 rating). Gradkowski will face a stiffer test against the Bengals. Cincy is coming off a bye and has had two weeks to stew over their 38-13 loss to the Patriots. The Bucs are having an atypical season defensively and will likely struggle to contain Palmer and company. However, if the Bengals want to go to the next level, they must show some maturity. Some of the Bengals post game comments after the NE loss shows that they still don't get it.
Bengals 31-20

Houston at Dallas 1:00 p.m.
When the Texans have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Houston 27.67 (30th)
DRI: Dallas 7.00 (6th)
Advantage: Dallas
Passing:
YPA: Houston 6.13 (12th)
DPR: Dallas 77.1 (14th)
Advantage: EVEN
When the Cowboys have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Dallas 4.33 (3rd)
DRI: Houston 26.33 (27th)
Advantage: Dallas
Passing:
YPA: Dallas 5.88 (18th)
DPR: Houston 113.1 (31st)
Advantage: Dallas
Intangibles: Dallas gets a soothing balm for their stinging loss at Philly.
Cowboys 31-21

N.Y. Giants at Atlanta 1:00 p.m.
When the Giants have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: N.Y. Giants 6.33 (T-5th)
DRI: Atlanta 3.67 (2nd)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: N.Y. Giants 7.00 (3rd)
DPR: Atlanta 57.8 (3rd)
Advantage: EVEN
When the Falcons have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Atlanta 1.00 (1st)
DRI: N.Y. Giants 10.67 (12th)
Advantage: Atlanta
Passing:
YPA: Atlanta 4.55 (31st)
DPR: N.Y. Giants 89.6 (24th)
Advantage: Giants
Intangibles: The G-men played their best game of the year in beating the Redskins. The Falcons face their greatest challenge to their #1 rushing attack. So far, the toughest run defense Atlanta has encountered was 19th (DRI) ranked Carolina.
Giants 24-17

Philadelphia at New Orleans 1:00 p.m.
When the Eagles have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Philadelphia 7.67 (8th)
DRI: New Orleans 22.67 (T-24th)
Advantage: Philadelphia
Passing:
YPA: Philadelphia 7.99 (1st)
DPR: New Orleans 81.6 (17th)
Advantage: Philadelphia
When the Saints have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: New Orleans 15.67 (15th)
DRI: Philadelphia 19.10 (18th)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: New Orleans 6.80 (5th)
DPR: Philadelphia 74.1 (11th)
Advantage: New Orleans
Intangibles: After an emotional win over Dallas and Owens, the Eagles are poised for a letdown. Over the past two weeks the Saints lost to Carolina and barely escaped a loss at home to the lowly Buccaneers. The best story out of the Big Easy is the play of QB Drew Brees. Under him, the Saints are 5th in passing YPA. Moreover, Brees is less likely to suffer a multi-INT game like Drew Bledsoe did in Philly last week.
Saints 24-21

Seattle at St. Louis 1:00 p.m.
When the Seahawks have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Seattle 18.00 (20th)
DRI: St. Louis 22.00 (T-21st)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: Seattle 5.34 (22nd)
DPR: St. Louis 70.8 (10th)
Advantage: St. Louis
When the Rams have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: St. Louis 19.00 (21st)
DRI: Seattle 9.67 (11th)
Advantage: Seattle
Passing:

YPA: St. Louis 6.44 (7th)
DPR: Seattle 83.3 (19th)
Advantage: St. Louis
Intangibles: Like the Bengals, the Seahawks had two weeks to dwell on a crushing loss to a quality opponent. Shaun Alexander's injury has hampered the Seattle running game. Moreover, the Hawks passing games have been playing below expectations on both sides of the ball. The Rams are at home and have done very well in 2006 in the offensive/defensive passing games. If the Rams win, it could shake up things in the NFC West.
Rams 34-24

Tennessee at Washington 1:00 p.m.
When the Titans have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Tennessee 17.33 (T-17th)
DRI: Washington 11.67 (14th)
Advantage: Washington
Passing:
YPA: Tennessee 5.14 (25th)
DPR: Washington 95.4 (28th)
Advantage: EVEN
When the Redskins have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Washington 6.00 (4th)
DRI: Tennessee 29.33 (30th)
Advantage: Washington
Passing:
YPA: Washington 6.65 (6th)
DPR: Tennessee 99.3 (29th)
Advantage: Washington
Intangibles: Kudos to the Titans for putting up a valiant effort at Indy last week. However, the Redskins will look to bounce back from a shocking loss to the Giants, which their offense was held to a measly 3 points.
Redskins 38-20

Kansas City at Pittsburgh 4:15 p.m.
When the Chiefs have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Kansas City 21.33 (22nd)
DRI: Pittsburgh 8.67 (10th)
Advantage: Pittsburgh
Passing:
YPA: Kansas City 5.98 (16th)
DPR: Pittsburgh 78.7 (15th)
Advantage: EVEN
When the Steelers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Pittsburgh 17.33 (T-17th)
DRI: Kansas City 16.33 (17th)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: Pittsburgh 5.11 (26th)
DPR: Kansas City 66.5 (7th)
Advantage: Kansas City
Intangibles: For all the criticism aimed at Herm Edwards, the Chiefs have been a surprising team in many ways. The biggest surprises have been the KC pass defense and the play of QB Damon Huard. While the Steelers defense remains strong, there have been problems with the running ans passing games on offense. RB Willie Parker can't do it alone and Ben Roethlisberger looks like he came back too soon. This is a must-win for the Steelers at home.
Steelers 16-14

Miami at N.Y. Jets 4:15 p.m.
When the Dolphins have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Miami 23.33 (24th)
DRI: N.Y. Jets 27.33 (28th)
Advantage: Miami
Passing:
YPA: Miami 5.08 (27th)
DPR: N.Y. Jets 74.9 (12th)
Advantage: N.Y. Jets
When the Jets have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: N.Y. Jets 25.00 (T-26th)
DRI: Miami 6.33 (5th)
Advantage: Miami
Passing:
YPA: N.Y. Jets 6.42 (9th)
DPR: Miami 93.2 (26th)
Advantage: N.Y. Jets
Intangibles: The Jets must pick themselves up from the canvas after two consecutive bitter losses. The Good news is that, while I expected the Jets to lose those games, their schedule invites the possibility of a 10-win season.
Jets 20-9

San Diego at San Francisco 4:15 p.m.
When the Chargers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: San Diego 3.67 (2nd)
DRI: San Francisco 22.67 (T-24th)
Advantage: San Diego
Passing:
YPA: San Diego 6.24 (10th)
DPR: San Francisco 94.5 (27th)
Advantage: San Diego
When the 49ers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: San Francisco 10.33 (9th)
DRI: San Diego 4.67 (3rd)
Advantage: San Diego
Passing:
YPA: San Francisco 6.43 (8th)
DPR: San Diego 52.4 (2nd)
Advantage: San Diego
Intangibles: The Chargers are a superior team across the board. However, that was the case last year, too. Despite the terrific QB play of Phillip Rivers, I wouldn't put it past a Martyball team to play down to the level of their opponents
Chargers 23-17

Oakland at Denver 8:15 p.m.
When the Raiders have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Oakland 11.00 (11th)
DRI: Denver 14.67 (15th)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: Oakland 3.50 (32nd)
DPR: Denver 68.7 (8th)
Advantage: Denver
When the Broncos have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Denver 6.33 (T-5th)
DRI: Oakland 22.33 (23rd)
Advantage: Denver
Passing:
YPA: Denver 5.50 (21st)
DPR: Oakland 92.8 (25th)
Advantage: Denver
Intangibles: The only thing going for the Raiders is that they have nothing to lose.
Broncos 27-3

Monday, Oct. 16

Chicago at Arizona 8:30 p.m.
When the Bears have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Chicago 17.33 (T-17th)
DRI: Arizona 22.00 (T-21st)
Advantage: Chicago
Passing:
YPA: Chicago 7.58 (2nd)
DPR: Arizona 88.0 (22nd)
Advantage: Chicago
When the Cardinals have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Arizona 29.00 (T-31st)
DRI: Chicago 8.00 (8th)
Advantage: Chicago
Passing:
YPA: Arizona 5.99 (14th)
DPR: Chicago 59.3 (4th)
Advantage: Chicago
Intangibles: Da Bears have been the most dominant team in the league this season. With their soft schedule and new-found passing attack, members of the '72 Dolphins should be nervous.
Bears 30-13

Open date: Cleveland, Green Bay, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Minnesota, New England

Raiders have been known to beat Denver when they stink. And they do stink...

WOW! I thought I did well with 13/14. My only screw-up was, of course, picking the Cowgirls to win....

Re: The NFL: Week# 6

Love my Giants this week in a "statement" game in Atlanta. Fortunately for NYG, their run defense is much better than its pass.

Michael Vick has yet to attempt more than 22 passes in any single game this season. Wow.

I also think this may be the week where the Detroit Lions into the win column. Pretty much agree with everything else, although I'm taking Miami over the NY Jets and Seattle over St. Louis.

Awesome job as usual, RIyankee. Thanks.

I actually took the Saints.

This is a game I'd be interested in watching in between the Giants game. I think the Saints are going to have one of those magical home schedules this year. This is a big statement game for them. I think they'll be ready.

I know Donovan McNabb has played extraordinarily well this season. Through the first handful of weeks, he's probably leading for the MVP. But there's something about Philadelphia I still don't believe in. While they manhandled Houston, San Franscico and Green Bay, the Giants and Cowboys exposed a lot on their defense. Now they have to deal with Deuce McAllister, Reggie Bush, Joe Horn, and Marcus Colston. Should be very interesting.

Saints, 23-20 or something like that.

What's interesting is despite the Eagles' strong start in comparison to the inconsistent one for the Giants, should these predictions come to fruition, Philadelphia would be 4-2, New York 3-2. However, NYG has that valuable win at Philly, plus a 2-0 division record.
