Re: My 2006 MLB Regular Season Awards
Reasonable in most cases. I don't know if you were also ranking your honorable mentions, because I certainly disagree with a few of those (like having Melky leading the pack of HMs). Couple of notable points where I differ:
I think NL MVP goes to Pujols, though that's very, very debatable. The CY, I think, should still go to a starter. As good as Hoffman has been, he has 5 blown saves and an 0-2 record. Forget about 20 game winners, he hasn't even managed to notch one. Both Webb and Carpenter have had reasonable enough seasons that one should win. |

I disagree with Melky being a honorable mention on your ROY candidates. Other than that, you are spot on. Maybe Chris Carpenter should win NL CY Young though.

Re: My 2006 MLB Regular Season Awards
AL MVP: Derek Jeter
AL ROY: Justin Verlander AL Cy: Johan Santana (easy one) AL MOY: Jim Leyland AL CPOY: Frank Thomas (easy one) Executive: Billy Beane, he picked up Thomas for $500K or something like that NL MVP: Ryan Howard, over Pujols by a whisker NL ROY: Dan Uggla, over H. Ramirez by a whisker NL Cy: Chris Carpenter NL MOY: Joe Girardi NL CPOY: Nomar Garciaparra Executive: Kevin Towers, for robbing "wonder-boy" of Bard and Meredith...without those guys San Diego doesn't make the playoffs. |

Well, I didn't rank the HMs in order. I didn't go 1, 2, 3 or anything like that.

Billy Beane will get some props. Without Frank Thomas, the A's offense would've been sputtering. Kevin Towers will get some kudos in the NL. |

Re: My 2006 MLB Regular Season Awards
Carlos Beltran should get some consideration for the NL MVP. But it will probably go to Pujols, because without him the Cardinals lineup would be very weak.

Santana should be unanimous AL Cy Young. Wang should receive most of the 2nd place votes. NL MVP should be Carlos Beltran. Howard should not be considered so highly, especially since Philadelphia's season is done. Relievers should not receive the Cy Young award unless they've had an extraordinary year (50+ saves, multi-inning saves, no blown saves, sub-1.00 ERA, team wins division). Webb deserves the NL Cy Young. |

Re: My 2006 MLB Regular Season Awards

I agree with you on relievers, but I don't think the NL MVP is Beltran. Pujols has a monster OPS, and means more to his team than Beltran does. Beltran has Delgado and Wright to pick up the team if he's struggling. Pujols has to carry his team. Pujols has amazing RISP numbers, close and late numbers, go-ahead hits, game tying hits, and is, on the whole, probably more clutch than David Ortiz. He led him in all major "clutch" categories earlier in the year, though that might have tailed off now; not 100% sure on that point. Without Pujols, the Cardinals wouldn't even be sniffing the playoffs. Without Beltran, the Mets still have a pretty good shot. Howard should be considered highly because he basically carried his team to the point of contention through the last game of the year when his team's management had decided to call the season quits and rebuild. It's been tough for him to power his team to the playoffs when he gets intentionally walked half the time he steps up to the plate. He has had one of the best second halves of a season in history. He definitely deserves some votes. |

Re: My 2006 MLB Regular Season Awards
If you're picking NL Executive of the Year, it's got to be Omar Minaya.
Look at all the great (relatively) cheap pick-ups he's made this year: Endy Chavez Chad Bradford Orlando Hernandez Duaner Sanchez John Maine Darren Oliver Jose Valentin Shawn Green Guillermo Mota Oliver Perez (just for the potential) Plus, some bigger offseason moves that worked: Paul Lo Duca, Carlos Delgado, Billy Wagner and if you want to, throw Julio Franco in there somewhere. |

I actually think that Pujols will win now that the phillies are out of the playoffs.

But still, Verlander should win it. I though Liriano would run away with it until he went down.My picks would be pretty much the same, although I might give NL ROY to the entire Florida Marlins team. I'd maybe pick Hanley Ramirez or Dan Uggla, but honestly, how do you choose? And for NL Cy Young, I'd pick Webb unless Carpenter pitches really well tomorrow (Carpenter has given up 6R in each of his last starts, IIRC). NL Exec is probably going to Minaya, he's made some really great moves. Relievers, IMO, can win the Cy Young, but there have to be special circumstances and there has to be no standout SP. For instance, last year Mo deserved it more than Bartolo "I'm actually not even the best pitcher on my team in spite of my W-L record" Colon. |

Re: My 2006 MLB Regular Season Awards
American League
MVP: Derek Jeter(NYY) - This could go either way between Morneau and Derek. I'm being a bit of a homer here, but oh well. I think the slight difference OPS' is offset by Jeter's 33SB and 118 runs scored on top of his 96RBI. Runners Up: Justin Morneau(MIN), Jermaine Dye(CWS), David Ortiz(BOS) Cy Young: Johan Santana(MIN) - Nothing needs to be said. Runners Up: Chien Ming Wang(NYY), Roy Halladay(TOR) Manager of the Year: Jim Leyland(DET) - What a turn around. The free agent additions that the Tigers recieved were Kenny Rogers and Todd Jones. They almost have the same exact team that finished with 91 losses last year. Runners Up: Ron Gardenhire(MIN), Joe Torre(NYY) Rookie of the Year: Justin Verlander(DET) - If Markakis didn't slump early on in the season this award would be his(at this juncture). Verlander gets the nod from me for staying healthy. Runners Up: Fransisco Liriano(MIN), Jonathan Papelbon(BOS), Nick Markakis(BAL) Comeback Player of the Year: Frank Thomas(OAK) - What a steal. It's great to see the Big Hurt tearing it up again. Runners Up: Jim Thomes(CWS), Curt Schilling(BOS) Executive of the Year: Dave Dumbrowski(DET) - Brought Kenny Rogers and Jim Leyland to the motor city. He also went out and traded for Sean Casey when he saw that Shelton wasn't going to cut it. Runners Up: Billy Beane(OAK), Brian Cashman(NYY), National League MVP: Albert Pujols(PHI) - Once again, it pretty much comes down to who I want to win the MVP. I think Pujols means more to the Cardinals then Howard does Philadelphia. The Phillies have Utley and Rollins as a pretty good supporting cast. Pujols has Scott Rolen. Not knocking Scott Rolen, but it takes more then two(and for that matter three) guys to make a team, yet the Cardinals are still in the playoffs. Runners Up: Ryan Howard(PHI), Lance Berkman(HOU), Miguel Cabrera(FL), Freddy Sanchez(PIT) Cy Young: Brandon Webb(ARZ) - He'll finish with more IP then Carpenter, a better ERA, a better record, and slightly less K's. Webb has been outstanding all year and since Carpenter isn't running away with this award I'm giving it to him. Runners Up: Chris Carpenter(STL), Derek Lowe(LAD) Manager of the Year: Joe Girardi(FL) - He probably gets more credit then he deserves, but that doesn't change the fact that Girardi and his club exceeded any expectations set for them team this year. Runners Up: Charlie Manuel(PHI), Willie Randolph(NYM) Rookie of the Year: Hanley Ramirez(FL) - 51SB, 119 runs scored, and 17HR from the lead off position makes Ramirez my choice for this award. It was hard choosing between him and his teammate. Runners Up: Dan Uggla(FL), Ryan Zimmerman(WAS), Josh Johnson(FL) Comeback Player of the Year: Nomar Garciaparra(LAD) - Who else is there to choose from? Rolen continued to be bothered by injuries, Beltran had a subpar year but didn't really 'comeback' from anything other then a bad year, and the rest of the choices are just there to fill up space. Runners Up: No one. Executive of the Year: Larry Beinfest(FL) - Now I'm really going to give this guy the credit he deserves. This is the man who helped assemble the 2006 Florida Marlins. He's responsible For Annibal Sanchez, Hanley Ramirez, and Mike Jacobs. Runners Up: Omar Minaya(NYM), Ned Colleti(LAD) |

Re: My 2006 MLB Regular Season Awards
I think NL MVP should defenitely go to Pujols... he beats Howard easily in VORP, Win Shares, WPA, WARP3, WARP1, EQA, or whatever sabermetric way you want it. Furthermore, despite missing 15 games, Pujols has put up monstrous numbers and he has really carried the team down the stretch in September while Howard has faded. Other than Howard's big August and early September, he's been silent since.
