Steinbrenner needs to relax

Quote:
Umpire Adam Dowdy may have called his last game behind the plate if George Steinbrenner gets his way.

Dowdy made some bad decisions yesterday, but give him a break. He's a rookie umpire. Now Steinbrenner wants his job. Steinbrenner needs to relax. I hate the way he bullies people he if doesn't get his way. Because Steinbrenner is rich and owns the Yankees he thinks he can say and hurt whomever he wants without any disregard. He's been doing this throughout his ownership. Maybe Steinbrenner should look and yell at himself because he's made more mistakes than most people in baseball.

Re: Steinbrenner needs to relax

Steinbrenner is probably just talking out of anger. Most everyone does it and I find it hard to believe that Dowdy's opportunity will be taken from him so quickly. Besides I'm sure Gibbons may agree as he also saw the same miscalled pitches that we (and Joe Torre) did.

You're right - GS should chill out.

"I think it's a crime that the league would assign a rookie umpire to a crucial series like this. It's just stupid," Steinbrenner roared. "I'm really P.O.'d at the league for sending those kinds of umpires - a rookie umpire in here to do this series. We're going to see them (today)."

Since when is a series in April against anyone a "crucial" series?

What about the ump at second base who called Rios out on that attempted steal? That call was worse than any of the balls and strikes calls.

Re: Steinbrenner needs to relax

I think the comment by Steinbrenner is ridiculous. I can understand being upset if he felt that the ump wasn't calling balls & strikes as well as he could have and that Torre got tossed. But it's really excessive to say that a rookie ump shouldn't be a part of this series because of how "crucial" it is. In addition, a veteran ump is no guarantee of good umpiring either - there have been countless bad calls and poor jobs done behind the plate by umps with many years of experience as well.

While I don't like what he said, I am glad to hear him speak up about umpiring. It has been less that stellar so far this year (and not just for the Yankees). I think Bud and MLB need to address it and maybe this could get the ball rolling.

I hate to blame umpires for a loss but it seems like they just keep getting worse year in and year out. Instead of calling a game, they are throwing people out for almost no reason and making bad calls left and right. Im not saying anyone should be fired, but there needs to be someway to make umpires held responsible for when they dont do their job correctly.

Not that I'm defending George's anger, but a division rival who is real tough this year... it was a crucial series, I agree with him.

Tough to take a guy seriously who's been known to place "importance" on a spring training game with the Mets.

Steinbrenner is making idiotic comments about umpires again. Remember his beef in the 1977 or 1978 World Series about how National League umpires were biased against the AL teams? So where was the umpire (Ed Montague) from who allowed Reggie Jackson to get in the path of a thrown baseball to break up a DP? The NL, of course. Show some class, George. Say nothing.. This outburst will only cause more and more reporters to bait Steinbrenner into saying something stupid.

I guess you have forgotten last year how close yankees came to losing the division . Yes every game is important . If you thing the games in April are not as important as in september , then you are wrong .

Re: Steinbrenner needs to relax

Just like people in other professions, Umprires sould be accountable for their performance. His strike zone should be reviewed and if he was consistently calling pitches incorrectly, he should be let go or demoted.

I personally can't stand how an upmire can be inconsistent with the rule book and everyone will say "that's just his zone". An individual doesn't have the right to call balls and strike in accordance with their own views. The need to follow the rules. I personally can't wait until 10-15 years from now when the pitches are called by a computer. I'm serious, I can see it coming. Just because we had to rely on human judgement to call the games 100 years ago, doesn't mean we have to now.

Re: Steinbrenner needs to relax

It would be no big loss. I would be more willing to give him a break if it was simply balls and strikes that he got wrong-umps who have been umping for 25 years in the majors get them wrong often-but he seemed to want to get into a confrontation with Torre. Instead of engaging Torre, he should have walked the other way. There are way too many umpires who have way too much pride and get into fights when they should and can ignore them, and the less of them there are, the better, in my view. (I obviously don't blame him for tossing Gibbons, because it was obvious that that was Gibbons' intention-to get tossed. Torre was talking to him from the bench, and since it was in between innings, he could have easily just turned and stood on the third base line, looking away from him.)

I wish George said the same things about Joe West last year.

That's where my agreement with George ends. We may not like the calls, but you don't ask for someone's job. Everyone makes mistakes. And the Yanks have had many go their way.

At 75 years old, I don't think George needs advice on life from you.

Give me a break.
