Updated Draft & Follow + 5th Year Signees Summary

thanks to Matsui55 and RobertMeacham for helping gather the info about all these fine gentlemen.

In case anyone doesnt know anything about the process, The D&F guys are attending junior colleges and can be signed in May prior to the June Draft. The 5th Year signs also can be signed in May. The players listed on the bottom are not signable and all of the juniors & seniors will be available in the Draft in June.

==================================================================
Possible 5th Year Senior Signs:
==================================================================

28th Round (#859) (RHP) Derek Duclos - University of Richmond [10/30/82]
Height: 6'3 / Weight: 195
2005 Stats: 9 G - 11.2 IP - 14 H - 9 BB - 8 SO - 6.17 ERA

BA sez:#35 prospect in VA.

Other Info:Still coming back from arm surgery in 2004.

======================

44th Round (#1333) (RHP) Justin Keadle - Wake Forest University [12/6/82]
Height: 6'2 / Weight: 211
2005 Stats: DID NOT PLAY

BA sez: (from 2004 draft preview) Drafted in 2002 by the Yankees out of Cypress (Calif.) JC, he touched 93 mph with his fastball last summer, when he finished second in the Cape Cod League in strikeouts. He didn't show that velocity this spring, pitching in the 88-90 range. His slider was better last summer and his command has been inconsistent as well. He had trouble getting his arm loose early in the season and had pitched better down the stretch.

Other Info: Did not pitch this year due to undergoing Tommy John. Could be a sleeper. Was a Cape Cod League All-Star summer of 2004. Was drafted by the Yankees in 2002 out of Cypress College, but he chose to go to Wake Forest. Was drafted again in 2004 by Colorado, but once again did not sign.

==================================================================
Draft & Follow Candidates:
==================================================================

21st Round (#649) (C) Hanseld Diaz - Miami Dade CC South [9/20/84]
Height: 6-1 / Weight: 220
2005 Stats: 114 AB - .430 AVG - 12 2B - 2 HR

CC Stats: Here

======================

22nd Round (#679) (RHP) Michael Lee - Bellevue CC [11/18/86]
Height: 6'5 / Weight: 190
2005 Stats: (incomplete) 1.70 ERA - 8-2 - 52/14 K/BB

PG sez: (From Spring of 05) Lee is a tall lanky junior right hander from Washington State. He has good athletic actions for a big young man and is very projectable for gaining strength and velocity over the next few years. He throws from a slow, deliberate, on-line delivery with a high ¾’s release point and little effort or tension. Lee closes his hips off well and uses his whole body smoothly. His fastball was very steady in the 80-82 mph range with good late sinking action. Lee’s curveball was 66-68 with some sweeping action and he also threw a 64 mph change up. He showed us a mature ability to throw strikes with all 3 pitches and work hitters. Lee is going to be a very good college pitcher at the least when he adds some more strength and who knows from there. He’s a prospect to keep a very close eye on. Possible huge sleeper here!

Bellevue's Scouting Report sez: One of the most polished freshmen pitchers to ever enter the program…was dominating in the fall and will be one of four starters in the rotation this spring…gets outs as good as anyone else in the league…tremendous projection as a pro prospect due to size (6’ 6’) and loose, whippy arm…throws four pitches for strikes, all equally well…slider is above average but uses all pitches to get outs…does everything asked of a pitcher; throws strikes, works fast, changes speeds, and gets outs…is learning to adapt to college baseball environment and structure which will help him adjust to playing baseball at a higher level in the future.

PG Scouting Video: http://www.perfectgame.org/VIDEOS/04UND/MichaelLee.rm

STATUS: Plans to play at Bellevue for 1 year and then sign with the Yankees. Hopes to improve his velocity and end up receiving early round-type money.

CC Stats: Here

======================

23rd Round (#709) (C) Matt Wallach - Cypress CC [2/17/86]
Height: 6'2 / Weight: 190
2005 Stats: 119 AB - .252/.343/.353 - 11/12 BB/K - 0 SB

BA sez: #126 prospect in CA - [Wallach], son of ex-big leaguer Tim Wallach, wasn’t drafted in 2004 but has made substantial strides in his conversion from third base after breaking his hamate bone in the fall. Wallach has excelled at throwing out runners and handling pitchers. His swing is similar to his fathers’s, though from the left side.

CC Stats: Can't find a direct link to stats yet

======================

24th Round (#739) (RHP) Justin Phillabaum - Indian River CC [4/18/86]
Height: 6'2 / Weight: 180
2005 Stats: (with St. Cloud Riverbats) - 13 G - 49.1 IP - 48 H - 29 BB - 35 SO - 3.28 ERA

PG sez: (from before the 2004 draft) Good low to mid 80s fastball with run and sink. 70 mph breaking ball that shows promise. Arm works loose and easy. He projects!

Other Info: Drafted by Boston in 2004 as a D&F but did not sign. This year he pitched with Indian River Community College. When the season ended he signed with the St. Cloud Riverbats (a team in the Northwoods League, which is a summer collegiate league)

CC Stats: Here or Here

======================

26th Round (#799) (LHP) Patrick Caldwell - ????? [12/15/84]
Height: 6'2 / Weight: 204
2005 Stats: 11 IP - 8 H - 12 BB - 9 SO - 4.09 ERA

BA sez:#24 JUCO prospect for 2005 draft - (from 2004 draft preview) [Caldwell] was compared to the Indians' C.C. Sabathia, mostly because of his physique but also because of his potential to be a big, dominant lefthander. Caldwell threw 81-82 mph in high school and weighed 280 pounds when he enrolled in junior college. He dropped 40 pounds and his velocity improved by 8-10 mph, with the possibility of more.

Other Info:Drafted last year by the Yankees, pitched very few innings at Yavapai due to injury. Current JUCO unknown

CC Stats: None

======================

30th Round (#919) (LF) Cameron Johnson - Southern Nevada CC [7/7/86]
Height: 6'3 / Weight: 195
2005 Stats: 55 AB - .327/.409/.400 - 5/13 BB/K - 3 SB

Other Info: A very raw athlete. Unlikely hero leads CCSN to win

Height: 6'3 / Weight: 190
2005 Stats: (NEEDED)

PG sez: #189 on Top 1,000 list.

Other Info: (Alabama's site) Josh Styes is rated as the top player in the state of Alabama by Perfect Game USA. He is also rated as the 107th best player in the nation according to Perfect Game USA’s Top 200 high school prospects. He is right-hand pitcher at Clay-Chalkville High School for coach Jeff Mauldin. Styes best season to date came as a sophomore in 2003, where he posted a 13-1 record and 0.71 ERA on the mound. He also added 111 strikeouts. For his efforts, Josh was named to the 2003 Birmingham News Super All-State Team and the Birmingham News Class 6A All-State team. He was also a Super All-State selection by the Alabama Sports Writer’s Association and an ASWA Class 6A All-State pick. Styes led Clay-Chalkville to the 2003 Class 6A state championship. In game one of the best of three series against Baker High School of Mobile, Styes tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout and struck out 12 batters in the 3-2. For his efforts, he was named the MVP of the Class 6A state playoffs. Clay-Chalkville finished its state championship season with a 37-5 record. As a junior, he led Clay-Chalkville to the Class 6A state playoffs for the second straight year. After wins over Wenonah (10-1) and Spain Park (5-2), Clay Chalkville dropped two of three games to Oak Mountain in the quarterfinals. Styes was selected to play in the North-South All-Star game at the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s All-Star Sports Week.

STATUS: Top Alabama high school prospect had injury issues during his senior year, and decided to not attend University of Alabama. He instead will be attending a JUCO If he is healthy the entire year, he could be one of the biggest D&F signings in all of baseball next year.

47th Round (#1419) - (OF) Eric Hanlon - Lon Morris CC [10/2/86]
Height: 6'3 / Weight: 185

Other Info:All-District Newcomer of the Year

CC Stats: No Stats Link yet

==================================================================
Players who signed, but did not play professionally in 2005:
==================================================================

11th Round (#349) (RHP) Alan Horne - University Of Florida [1/5/83]
Height: 6'4 / Weight: 195
2005 College Stats: 16 GS - 95.2 IP - 106 H - 42 BB - 89 SO - 4.05 ERA

Scouting Report: Tall, lean, wiry build, like Kris Benson. FB mostly 88-89 mph w/ slight sink down in zone. Loose out front, w/ whip-like arm action. Uses cut FB as a slider, quick, late, sharp break, best pitch. Around the strike zone, keeps ball down.

BA sez: #111 top prospect in draft class - If Horne wants to play pro ball, the time is now. He’s lived a baseball lifetime since he played with Angels prospect Jeff Mathis back in high school. Horne was a first-round pick in 2001 but didn’t sign with the Indians, attending Mississippi instead. After a solid freshman year, Horne hurt his elbow early in his sophomore year and had Tommy John surgery, taking a medical redshirt. He then transferred in December 2003 to Chipola (Fla.) Junior College, where his father had played and where he had known the coach, Jeff Johnson, since he was young. Johnson helped Horne develop a cut fastball that he could throw consistently for strikes, a pitch he honed at Florida after he transferred. Horne turned down six-figure offers from the Angels to go to Florida and was throwing better and better as the spring progressed, sitting in the 88-93 mph range with his fastball. He’s also learned to compete better and has improved his approach to pitching. Still, Horne doesn’t pound the strike zone and can run up high pitch counts, making him more of a back-of-the-rotation starter.

Other Info: Had TJ Surgery after turning down a 1st round draft out of high school. Still recovering, a bit of a project but a high ceiling.

STATUS: Had lingering injury issues from the college world series, and ended up signing very late. He should be in Charleston or Tampa this year.

======================

12th Round (#379) (C) Joseph Muich - Wichita State University [8/18/82]
Height: 6'1 / Weight: 205
2005 College Stats: .297/.388/.493 - 26/35 BB/K - 5 SB

BA sez: #21 Prospect in Kansas. Best Catcher & Catcher's Arm in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2005

STATUS: Injured after signing, likely our best defensive catcher in the system when he gets a chance to play this year

======================

13th Round (#409) (1B) Karl Amonite - Auburn University [4/14/82]
Height: 6'5 / Weight: 230
2005 Stats: 208 AB - .365/.469/.654 - 41/35 BB/K - 0 SB

Scouting Report: Built like John Olerud w/ nice approach at plate. Chance to hit for some power. Ball jumps off bat. Fifth year senior looking for chance in pro ball.

BA sez: #17 in Alabama - He lacks athleticism and his bat speed is just fair, but he’s strong and should hit in the middle of a minor league lineup. As a Canadian, he benefited from a recent change to visa rules that should allow him to start his pro career this summer.

STATUS: Got hurt following the 2005 season. Underwent physical and should be in Charleston or Tampa for 2006.

==================================================================

Re: Updated Draft & Follow + 5th Year Signees Summary

News about Amonite I just found..

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Baseball/C...8/1416246.html

Quote:
Amonite was drafted by the by the San Francisco Giants in the 45th round from the Connors State Cowboys in 2001 and the New York Yankees in the 13th round in June of 2005.

Amonite is still under control of the Yankees and underwent a physical this week in Tampa, Fla. He did not sign after the draft last year because he hurt his knee at the regionals and could not have played in the summer of 2005.

The Yanks are planning on having him in spring training and compete for a job in their system as long as his knee allows. Yankee scouts say Amonite is the best power hitter that they drafted last year.

Very good news.

Re: Updated Draft & Follow + 5th Year Signees Summary

Is Fon good enough to be worth reapproaching this year in a middle or late round but with early round money? Has he definitively stated that he won't sign, or is it more of a money/round thing for him?

Fon will not be draft eligible again until after his junior season, since he was drafted last year.

Indeed. I think the fact that he went to the JUCO instead of Alabama leads me to believe that he would like to sign if the money is right and hes healthy. If he were healthy last spring, He easily would have been a 1-3 round selection from all i've read.

You guys stay on top of things. I was just wondering why all the fuss about Karl Amonite, he will be 24 yrs old, lacks athleticism and his bat speed is just fair. Sounds almost like Shelley Duncan, a likely career minor leaguer. He could be someone that takes away development time from other prospects.

About Brett Summers ...

I spoke to the coach (Mike Goedde) at USI who said that Brett transferred to USI just before the fall semester started, appealed to UVA but was not given a release, therefore was not eligible. He transferred to South Suburban Junior College in order to be able to pitch immediately. I don't see him on their roster for South Sub, but it sounded pretty credible considering Brett's brother Adam pitches at USI.

His numbers at Auburn were .365/.469/.654 - 41/35 BB/K. That's certainly worth a shot at pro ball.

Why not, can't hurt. They like to stack that SI roster every year.

I've met Diallo Fon a few times and he's a good guy. I hope the Yankees draft him again after he's done here at Vandy.

I think they should let him and Jones fight for 1B/DH at Tampa. Theres no way he'll be in SI at his age, and Fermin and Poterson have Charleston locked up

Hey.

Nice deal. Let's see if he shows something. But it looks like the visa problems were just a cover-up or just not true.

Where does Larsen fit in, in your scheme of things? He had an excellent season in SI, and is not exactly a kid. He was not drafted, but did very well for a walk-on. His defense certainly improved as the season went on, from what I saw of him.

And besides Jones, there is Cody Ehlers, drafted the same year as Jones (a few rounds apart).

Yeah good point. I had Larsen as the starting 1B at Tampa when the season ended. I dunno actually

I agree. There are too many bodies for too few spots, or so it seems.

I hope 1 or 2 of these guys really has a breakout season, and gets on teh fast track to the upper levels of the system.
