==================================================================
Players who signed, but did not play this year:
==================================================================

11th Round (#349) (RHP) Alan Horne - University Of Florida [1/5/83]
Height: 6'4 / Weight: 195
2005 College Stats: 16 GS - 95.2 IP - 106 H - 42 BB - 89 SO - 4.05 ERA

Scouting Report: Tall, lean, wiry build, like Kris Benson. FB mostly 88-89 mph w/ slight sink down in zone. Loose out front, w/ whip-like arm action. Uses cut FB as a slider, quick, late, sharp break, best pitch. Around the strike zone, keeps ball down.

BA sez: #111 top prospect in draft class - If Horne wants to play pro ball, the time is now. He’s lived a baseball lifetime since he played with Angels prospect Jeff Mathis back in high school. Horne was a first-round pick in 2001 but didn’t sign with the Indians, attending Mississippi instead. After a solid freshman year, Horne hurt his elbow early in his sophomore year and had Tommy John surgery, taking a medical redshirt. He then transferred in December 2003 to Chipola (Fla.) Junior College, where his father had played and where he had known the coach, Jeff Johnson, since he was young. Johnson helped Horne develop a cut fastball that he could throw consistently for strikes, a pitch he honed at Florida after he transferred. Horne turned down six-figure offers from the Angels to go to Florida and was throwing better and better as the spring progressed, sitting in the 88-93 mph range with his fastball. He’s also learned to compete better and has improved his approach to pitching. Still, Horne doesn’t pound the strike zone and can run up high pitch counts, making him more of a back-of-the-rotation starter.

Other Info: Had TJ Surgery after turning down a 1st round draft out of high school. Still recovering, a bit of a project but a high ceiling.

STATUS: Had lingering injury issues from the college world series, and ended up signing very late. He should be in Charleston or SI next year.

======================

12th Round (#379) (C) Joseph Muich - Wichita State University [8/18/82]
Height: 6'1 / Weight: 205
2005 College Stats: .297/.388/.493 - 26/35 BB/K - 5 SB

Scouting Report: None.

BA sez: #21 Prospect in Kansas. Best Catcher & Catcher's Arm in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2005

STATUS: Injured after signing, likely our best defensive catcher in the system when he gets a chance to play next year.

==================================================================
PLAYERS WHO DID NOT SIGN, AND ARE ATTENDING 4 YEAR SCHOOLS:
==================================================================

6th Round (#199) (RHP) Douglas Fister - Fresno State [2/4/84]
Height: 6'8 / Weight: 195
2005 Stats: 15 GS - 93.2 IP - 90 H - 27 BB - 77 SO - 4.32 ERA

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL: Fresno State - Senior
5th year senior: No

Scouting Report: Extra-large frame. Tall & thin. Long, lean muscles. Loose, clean arm action. Fluid w/ good extention. 87-89 w/ downplane, late run & sink. Circle change w/ FB arm speed, fade & sink. Keeps hitters off balance w/ four-pitch mix.

BA sez: #100 in CA - Fresno State junior RHP Doug Fister (100) started at first base on Fridays and Saturdays and took the mound on Sundays in most Western Athletic Conference series this year. Though his velocity was normally 88-91 mph, he has a ways to go to fill out his 6-foot-8, 195-pound frame, and scouts believe he will add velocity as he puts on another 20-30 pounds.

Other Info: Plenty of room to fill out. Pure projection pick

======================

27th Round (#829) (RHP) Joshua Morgan - University Of Missouri: St Louis [7/15/84]
Height: 6'2 / Weight: 200
2005 Stats:(AS BATTER) 191 AB - .330/.414/.586 - 19/38 BB/K - 30 SB (AS PITCHER) 10 G - 31 IP - 37 H - 20 BB - 31 SO - 6.39 ERA

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL: University of Missouri: St Louis - Senior
5th year senior: No

Other Info: Supposedly drafted as a pitcher despite having much better numbers as a hitter.

======================

28th Round (#859) (RHP) Derek Duclos - University of Richmond [11/23/84]
Height: 6'3 / Weight: 195
2005 Stats: 9 G - 11.2 IP - 14 H - 9 BB - 8 SO - 6.17 ERA

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL:University Of Richmond - Senior
5th year senior: Yes

BA sez:#35 prospect in VA.

Other Info:Still coming back from arm surgery in 2004.

Roster Link: http://richmondspiders.collegesports...s_derek00.html

======================

29th Round (#889) (2B) Justin Turner - Cal State Fullerton [11/23/84]
Height: 5'11 / Weight: 180
2005 Stats: 232 AB - .328/.395/.457 - 17/31 BB/K - 11 SB

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL:Cal State Fullerton - Senior
5th year senior: No

Scouting Report: Medium build. Stronger than appears. Similar to Craig Biggio. Puts ball in play, uses whole field to hit. Alert fielder, quick. Scrapper, overachiever. Makes things happen.

BA sez:#141 prospect in CA - Rated best defensive 2B in the Big West - [Turner] has the potential to be a shortstop at the professional level, even though he’s spent his college career with the Titans almost exclusively at second. The Titans say he’s too valuable a defender at second to move him.

======================

36th Round (#1099) (RHP) Brett Summers - Lake Central HS (Dyer, IN) [3/26/87]
Height: 6'6 / Weight: 185
2005 Stats: 30 G (12 GS) 65 IP - 49 H - 14 BB - 68 SO - 1.08 ERA - 6 CG

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL: University Of Virginia - Freshman
5th year senior: No

BA sez: #3 prospect in IN - Summers has the most projectable body at 6-foot-6 and 185 pounds, but he may not be signable away from Virginia. He has been flying open in his delivery, costing him leverage, velocity on his fastball (he has pitched mostly at 85-89 mph) and sharpness on his curveball. - (from Alan Matthews chat before draft) "He is a basketball player who is still a bit raw in his pitching mechanics. He can touch 90 mph and generates very good leverage and he has a solid changeup-curveball combination."

PG sez: #131 on Top 1,000 list - Brett Summers is a tall thin extremely projectable 6'6/185 RHP from Dyer, IN, has national top prospect tools, 90 mph FB, high 3/4 release with good leverage, solid change/CB combination, minimal effort, down hill plane, excellent arm speed, projects off the charts, highest level prospect with excellent draft potential, good student
PG Scouting Video: http://www.perfectgame.org/VIDEOS/04...ettSummers.wmv

======================

43rd Round (#1304) (RHP) Brady Salter - Aurora University [12/26/82]
Height: 6'5 / Weight: 220
2005 Stats: 10 GS - 63.1 IP - 74 H - 28 BB - 49 SO - 3.84 ERA

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL: Aurora University - Senior
5th year senior: Possibly...

Other Info: Transfered from Illinois State University after 2004 season.

======================

44th Round (#1333) (RHP) Justin Keadle - Wake Forest University [12/6/82]
Height: 6'2 / Weight: 211
2005 Stats: DID NOT PLAY

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL: Justin Keadle - Senior
5th year senior: YES

BA sez: (from 2004 draft preview) Drafted in 2002 by the Yankees out of Cypress (Calif.) JC, he touched 93 mph with his fastball last summer, when he finished second in the Cape Cod League in strikeouts. He didn't show that velocity this spring, pitching in the 88-90 range. His slider was better last summer and his command has been inconsistent as well. He had trouble getting his arm loose early in the season and had pitched better down the stretch.

Other Info: Did not pitch this year due to undergoing Tommy John. Could be a sleeper. Was a Cape Cod League All-Star summer of 2004. Was drafted by the Yankees in 2002 out of Cypress College, but he chose to go to Wake Forest. Was drafted again in 2004 by Colorado, but once again did not sign.

Roster Link: http://wakeforestsports.collegesport..._justin00.html

======================

45th Round (#1362) (1B) Brett Pill - Cal State Fullerton [9/9/84]
Height: 6'4 / Weight: 190
2005 Stats: 247 AB - .324/.384/.482 - 19/46 BB/K - 4 SB

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL: Cal State Fullerton - Junior (redshirted freshman year)
5th year senior: No

BA sez:#80 prospect in CA - has an impressive bat. He stays inside the ball well and takes good at-bats, but he doesn’t project enough power yet in his thin 6-foot-4 frame. He has a high price tag, but it’s unlikely a team will spend what’s necessary to but him out of two more years with the Titans.

======================

48th Round (#1447) (RF) Andrew Rice - Itawamba JC [1/6/85]
Height: 6'1 / Weight: 195
2005 Stats: (NEEDED)

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL: University Of Mississippi State - Sophmore
5th year senior: No

BA sez:#15 prospect in MS - [Rice] has plus raw power but not enough of an idea of how to use it consistently.

======================

49th Round (#1474) (OF) Diallo Fon - Las Lomas HS [10/3/86]
Height: 6'0 / Weight: 185
2005 Stats: .379 AVG - 3 HR - 13 SB
2004 Stats: .357 AVG - 4 HR - 12 SB

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL: Vanderbilt University - Freshman
5th year senior: No

Scouting Report: Athletic build. Similar to Andruw Jones. Live bat and power to all fields. Good fielding instincts. Excellent makeup. Tools to be a frontline Major League OF.

BA sez: #20 Prospect in CA - Fon, who also goes by the name of Diallo Achu, has an interesting background in that his parents divorced when he was two, and his father moved back to Africa. He keeps in contact with him by e-mail. Fon’s style and approach remind scouts of Twins outfielder Jacque Jones. He has similar tools, a similar batting stroke and similarly good power for a player with a slight build. On the 20-80 scouting scale, Fon’s power grades as a 45 now and 60 down the road. The ball jumps off his bat and he has a history of hitting with wood as a longtime member of the Norcal youth travel team, one of the nation’s best youth programs. Fon is a slightly below-average runner with a slightly below-average arm, but he compensates for those shortcomings by getting good jumps in center field and having sound baserunning instincts. Fon’s mother would like for him to honor his college commitment to Vanderbilt, but he reportedly wants to sign—especially if he’s picked in the first three or four rounds, as expected.

======================

50th Round (#1501) (C) Blake Heym - Grayson County College [1/4/85]
Height: 6'2 / Weight: 195
2005 Stats: 93 AB - .312 AVG - 2 HR - 0 SB

2006 4 YEAR SCHOOL: University of Alabama @ Huntsville - Junior
5th year senior: No

BA sez: "Heym spent his freshman year as a red shirt at Auburn, but decided to transfer in order to get more playing time"

Other Info: ""He's a guy with some thunder in his bat," Grayson coach Tim Tadlock said. "He can hit. He's a lefty-hitting catcher with an average-to-Major League arm. He's a very intelligent kid with an aptitude to learn how to catch, call a game and all that. He's the best 50th-round pick I've seen in a while. And he's been drafted one time more than a lot of other people. If I were him, I'd sign right now.""

==================================================================
PLAYERS WHO DID NOT SIGN, AND ARE NOT ATTENDING 4 YEAR SCHOOLS:
==================================================================

13th Round (#409) (1B) Karl Amonite - Auburn University [4/14/82]
Height: 6'5 / Weight: 230
2005 Stats: 208 AB - .365/.469/.654 - 41/35 BB/K - 0 SB

Scouting Report: Built like John Olerud w/ nice approach at plate. Chance to hit for some power. Ball jumps off bat. Fifth year senior looking for chance in pro ball.

BA sez: #17 in Alabama - He lacks athleticism and his bat speed is just fair, but he’s strong and should hit in the middle of a minor league lineup. As a Canadian, he benefited from a recent change to visa rules that should allow him to start his pro career this summer.

Other Info: Another Ben Jones?

STATUS: Already a 5th year senior at Auburn in 2005, he has now graduated from Auburn but still hasnt signed. There may be VISA issues, or perhaps he just doesnt want to play professional baseball
D&F?: NO

======================

21st Round (#649) (C) Hanseld Diaz - Miami Dade CC South [9/20/84]
Height: 6-1 / Weight: 220
2005 Stats: 114 AB - .430 AVG - 12 2B - 2 HR

Scouting Report: None.

STATUS: BA Reports him as being signed, but he did not show up on any roster this year. He is also not on any college roster (that i've been able to find). If he hasn't signed, he likely is heading back to Miami Dade CC and will be available as a D&F next May.
D&F: YES?
CC Stats:

======================

22nd Round (#679) (RHP) Michael Lee - Skyline HS (Issaquah, WA) [11/18/86]
Height: 6'5 / Weight: 190
2005 Stats: (incomplete) 1.70 ERA - 8-2 - 52/14 K/BB

PG sez: Lee is a tall lanky junior right hander from Washington State. He has good athletic actions for a big young man and is very projectable for gaining strength and velocity over the next few years. He throws from a slow, deliberate, on-line delivery with a high ¾’s release point and little effort or tension. Lee closes his hips off well and uses his whole body smoothly. His fastball was very steady in the 80-82 mph range with good late sinking action. Lee’s curveball was 66-68 with some sweeping action and he also threw a 64 mph change up. He showed us a mature ability to throw strikes with all 3 pitches and work hitters. Lee is going to be a very good college pitcher at the least when he adds some more strength and who knows from there. He’s a prospect to keep a very close eye on. Possible huge sleeper here!
PG Scouting Video: http://www.perfectgame.org/VIDEOS/04UND/MichaelLee.rm

Other Info: Lee propels high school team to finals

STATUS: Attending Bellevue Community College in WA. Plans to play there for 1 year and then sign with the Yankees. Hopes to improve his velocity and end up receiving early round-type money.
D&F: YES
CC Stats: http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/athletics/bas...statistics.stm

======================

23rd Round (#709) (C) Matt Wallach - Cypress College [2/17/86]
Height: 6'2 / Weight: 190
2005 Stats: 119 AB - .252/.343/.353 - 11/12 BB/K - 0 SB

BA sez: #126 prospect in CA - [Wallach], son of ex-big leaguer Tim Wallach, wasn’t drafted in 2004 but has made substantial strides in his conversion from third base after breaking his hamate bone in the fall. Wallach has excelled at throwing out runners and handling pitchers. His swing is similar to his fathers’s, though from the left side.

Other Info: A lefty catcher!

STATUS: Will be attending Cypress College for an additional year. Would need to improve his numbers from last year to be signed. http://pe.cypresscollege.edu/athleti...ge=2&msports=1
D&F: YES
CC Stats:

======================

24th Round (#739) (RHP) Justin Phillabaum - Indian River CC [4/18/86]
Height: 6'2 / Weight: 180
2005 Stats: (with St. Cloud Riverbats) - 13 G - 49.1 IP - 48 H - 29 BB - 35 SO - 3.28 ERA

PG sez: (from before the 2004 draft) Good low to mid 80s fastball with run and sink. 70 mph breaking ball that shows promise. Arm works loose and easy. He projects!

Other Info: Drafted by Boston in 2004 as a D&F but did not sign. This year he pitched with Indian River Community College. When the season ended he signed with the St. Cloud Riverbats (a team in the Northwoods League, which is a summer collegiate league)

Roster Link: http://www.ircc.edu/portal/layout_we...rtalPageID=342

STATUS: Attending Indian River CC for 2nd straight year
D&F: YES
CC Stats: http://www.ircc.edu/portal/layout_we...rtalPageID=342

26th Round (#799) (LHP) Patrick Caldwell - Yavapai CC [12/15/84]
Height: 6'2 / Weight: 204
2005 Stats: 11 IP - 8 H - 12 BB - 9 SO - 4.09 ERA

Scouting Report: None.

BA sez:#24 JUCO prospect for 2005 draft - (from 2004 draft preview) [Caldwell] was compared to the Indians' C.C. Sabathia, mostly because of his physique but also because of his potential to be a big, dominant lefthander. Caldwell threw 81-82 mph in high school and weighed 280 pounds when he enrolled in junior college. He dropped 40 pounds and his velocity improved by 8-10 mph, with the possibility of more.

Other Info:Drafted last year by the Yankees, pitched very few innings at Yavapai due to injury.

STATUS: Attending Yavapai for another year. If healthy, could be a big D&F pickup
D&F: YES

The guys most important to watch in the spring would be Lee, Caldwell, Styes and Hanlon. All could be big signs. Definitely looks like a more promising crop than last year

Re: 2005 Draft Followup (D&F, unsigned, etc)

BA lists both Valencia and Salter as signed by the Yanks. I believe the Salter signing is correct, as supposedly indicated he wanted to sign after the draft.

I also believe that Heym is D&F eligible- he only played one year at a 4 year shcool, then transferred to Greyson juco after that year. The reason I say he is still D&F eligible is that if he had played two years at the 4 year school (somewhere in Alabama?), then he would have been ineligible to even transfer to Greyson, as it is a 2 year school (both sports and degree).

I believe BA also has Diaz listed as signed, but that some confusion exists over whether that was supposed to be the person listed right after Diaz in the draft.

Question on Clayton Young- he pitched a VERY short time at KSU- then appears not to have pitched in 2004- is he a case of a double medical redshirt? By that I mean, did he get injured at KSU and not recover until 2005, which might give him an extra year of eligibility?

If Heym is going to University of Alabama now (and he is) he isnt D&F eligble no matter what happened before

You got it backwards- he CAME from a 4 year school TO Greyson- and did not play there. If he had already completed 2 years at a 4 year school, he would have been ineligible to transfer to a juco. Therefore, he must have used only one year of eligibility, and be a D&F this spring.

Got the info and dates wrong on Young- that should have said he signed to go to SDSU, never went, and never appeared in the Cal jucos in 2004 (unless he pitched in some other state?), but suddenly showed up in 2005. I THINK that means that he has only used up one year of eligibility, and is D&F eligible.

Re: 2005 Draft Followup (D&F, unsigned, etc)

Im confused..

2004 Freshman year: Auburn University 4 year - Redshirted
2005 Sophmore year: Greyson Community College 2 year
2006: Junior year: University of Alabama @ Huntsville 4 year

I dont follow what you're saying still. He just transfered from a CC to a 4 year school (Alabama).

more info from UoA's site

Junior - Hartselle, AL - Grayson Community College): A transfer from Grayson County Community College in Denison Texas, Heym hit over .320 with two homeruns and was drafted as a catcher by the New York Yankees. An Auburn signee coming out of Hartselle High School , Heym was a record setter for storied Hartselle program setting marks for highest career batting average (.385) and single season average of .455. Heym also hit eight long balls during his senior season at Hartselle

From who I've talked to Miguel Ruiz is the cream of this crop. Hard throwing righty with a live arm and very projectable. They'll watch him very closely. Valencia and Salter were not even in Tampa all summer or now, so I don't see how they would have signed.

Then why did he go in the 39th round? Extremely raw?

The same reason other talented D&F's go in the later rounds. Teams are not 100% ready to commit to their raw talent and know these guys are planning on going to small JUCOs.

Looks like your info is more up to date than mine on him- still, no loss- he's a 50th rounder who was the VERY last pick in the draft- his chances were lower than low.

Super summary.

Sounds Like Caldwell, Styles and Lee are the ones to watch. Wallach, as you noted, needs to hit, but I would love a lefty catcher in the organization. Think of his potential!!.

Ok, here's a stupid question:

What's the deal with D&F? How does it work?

The D&F is when you draft a player who does not attend a 4 year school you then have till a week before the draft to sign that drafted player.

Well now that you know what a D&F is don't get to caught up in it because if the new rule changes go into effect it will become a thing of the past.Too bad because we have had some Success with it.IE Pettitte,Henn,Posada ect...

There will be no new rule changes- BA was just building hype on the issue and trying to earn brownie points with MLB. Notice how fast they were running from the likelihood of it ever happening in their latest article on the subject.

BA at least was honest enough to admit that while the union has to sign off on the issue (and they would be HIGHLY unlikely to without concessions from the owners), it was the owners themselves that are sinking the issue. Basically, they can't agree on anything they themselves thought of.

Really, MLB needs a commissioner who is independent of the owner, with CEO authority to make decisions and abide by them. Until that happens, the players generally don't have to do anything- they let the owners float out these lead balloons, then watch them beat the heck out of each other before the players ever see the proposals.

Back to the point though- no new draft changes before the next collective bargaining agreement, if then.

Re: 2005 Draft Followup (D&F, unsigned, etc)

With the 2006 draft coming up I thought I'd take a look back at the 2005 draft take a look at some of our unsigned draftees who went back to or attended 4 year colleges did. It's hindsight I know but I was bored at work. Fister looks mediocre I guess it's good he wasn't shown the money. I don't see him going higher than the 6th round again.
