Better them than us !!!!

Dodgers' Managing Partner, Chairman and CEO Bob Daly addressed Los Angeles writers Monday and reportedly told them that Gary Sheffield would be his Opening Day left fielder.

Sheffield, who demanded to be traded at the outset of Spring Training and subsequently fired his agent, Jim Neader in favor of Scott Boras, rescinded his trade demand and has begun to play well in Spring Training. Since Sheffield held a meeting in which he apologized to his teammates, the Dodgers have won seven of their last eight exhibition games and lead the majors with 13 Spring Training victories.

Daly also applauded new manager Jim Tracy for the manner in which he has handled the Sheffield situation, managing to keep his team focused. Daly also said that Tracy's work reaffirms that he and his staff made the right decision in hiring the first-year manager last November.

"The main thing I tried to get across to all of them (in the meeting was that) when we reopen those doors, we're going to be a baseball team, and I think we've done a fine job accomplishing that," Tracy said yesterday.

Daly, who was the target of numerous Sheffield attacks, also said he believes that Sheffield was sincere in his most recent comments and that he has accepted the left fielder's apology.

Last season, Sheffield became the first player in Dodger history to hit at least .300 with 30 home runs, 100 RBI, 100 walks and 100 runs in two seasons.

And it had nothing to do with the fact that his attitude and public rantings made him nearly impossible to trade for market value?
