Maybe some +'s in Columbus
The Columbus Clippers and the Durham Bulls gave a very vocal crowd their moneys worth last night. The game took many twists and turns and finished with a very bizarre flourish.
Mike Thurman set the tone by striking out the side in the first inning but gave up a run on three seeing eye ground balls. It took Curtis Pride just one pitch to tie the score. He lifted a majestic shot deep into Dysart Park. The Clippers went ahead 2-1 on Bobby Smith's walk, Fernando Seguignol double and Juan Rivera's single. Bobby Smith led off the third with home run. The Bulls tied it up by scoring two runs in the fourth inning. Columbus came right back in the fifth, scoring three runs. Smith walked. The crowd raised the rafters as Seguignol (left) approached the plate. Fernando didn't disappoint. He smashed a 500 foot drive deep over the trees in right field. Bubba Crosby tripled to right field and blazed home on a wild pitch. Durham battled back and tied the score again in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. With one out in the eleventh, Marcus Jensen singled. Curtis Pride followed with a rocket in to the right field corner for a double. The crowd groaned when Bucky Dent held up at third base. John Rodriguez came in to run for Jensen. Craig Wilson reached on a fielders choice, as Rodriguez was forced at the plate. Pride moved over to third. Wilson stole second base. Bull's pitcher Talley Haines had a 3-1 count on Smith. He went in to his windup and the ball slipped out of his hand, going straight up in the air! The umpire called a balk and Pride trotted home with the winning run. Tim Adkins won his third game of the season. The Clippers fielded a team last night of former major leaguers. Scott Proctor threw 98 MPH yesterday. Brett Prinz and Sam Marsonek also topped out in the high 90's. The pitching staff recorded a season high by striking out 15 Bulls. Tonight, two of the finest young pitchers in baseball face off against one another. I.L. Pitcher of the Week, Jorge DePaula faces the Bulls' Carlos Reyes (9-2, 2.20). The game is at 6:05. Columbus right-hander JORGE DE PAULA made a pair of impressive starts this past week, continuing what has been an impressive rookie season at the Triple-A level. De Paula first took the hill last Monday in Norfolk (one day after turning 24-years-old) and tossed his second complete game shutout of the season in the Clippers’ 4-0 win over the Tides. He allowed six hits, walked none and fanned eight for his seventh win of the season. He returned to the mound Saturday in Toledo and tossed eight innings of six-hit, one-run ball as Columbus defeated their in-state rivals, 2-1. De Paula, a native of the Dominican Republic, again fanned eight opponents to earn the win. With two wins on the week, De Paula tied for the Clippers’ staff lead in wins. In addition, he ranks among IL leaders in shutouts (T-1st), complete games (T-1st ), innings pitched (2nd ) and strikeouts (T-4th ). De Paula has posted back-to-back 14+ win seasons in the New York organization after being acquired from the Rockies in April of 2001. That season, he went a combined 15-6 for a pair of Yankee affiliates, collecting 144 strikeouts and posting a 3.25 ERA. He spent last season at Double-A Norwich and led the Eastern League with 152 strikeouts and 175 innings pitched as he went 14-6. He entered the 2003 season rated as New York’s #8 Prospect as selected by Baseball America. |
