Top Ten Best and Worst Valued Players of 2002

Before I start, a disclaimer. The site I visited for these salaries didn't have several players such as Tejada (most valuble) or Tony Clark (least)
Accordingly, they were left out as I don't know their salaries.

Most Valued

1. Zito, Hudson, and Mulder
Hudson: .85 million 15-9 2.98
Mulder: .75 million 19-7 3.42
Zito: .5 million 23-5 2.75

Can't argue the intelligence of signing these three

2. Alfonso Soriano
.63 million .300-39-102 41 SB
The best value for an offensive player.

3. Ichiro
2 million .321-8-51 31 SB
Not only is he a great player, but he's a fan magnet, PLUS HE'S CHEAP!

4. Lance Berkman
500K .292-42-128
Anyone that you can get to hit 40 Homers and drive in over 100 runs for less then 1 million is a steal.

5. Todd Helton
5 million .329-30-109
One of the most underrated players in the game, don't look for his name on this list next year as his salary JUMPS!

6. Eddie Guardado
1.8 million 2.93 ERA 45 Saves
The cheapest of the premier closers.

7. Pat Burrell
1.275 million .282-37-116
Great player, cheap price.

8. David Wells
2 million 19-7 3.75 ERA
Who woulda thunk it?

9. Derek Lowe
3 million 21-8 2.58 ERA
I hate to give it to a member of the Red Sox , but he deserved it.

10. Barry Bonds
13 million .370-46-110 198 walks .582 OBP
I know he makes a lot, but LOOK AT THOSE NUMBERS! And he only makes half of what A-rod makes.

Honorable mentions: Vlad Guerrero, Jason Giambi, Roy Halladay, Paul Lo Duca, Paul Konerko, Jeff Kent, Eric Chavez, Mike Lowell, Matt Morris, Jim Thome.

WORST VALUED PLAYERS

1. Greg Vaughn
8.78 million: .163 8HR 29 RBI
NO COMPETITION

3. Mike Hampton
11 million 7-15 6.15
nuf said

3. Chan Ho Park
11 million 9-8 5.75 ERA
For this price, he should be an ace.

4. Sterling Hitchcock
5 million 1-2 5.75 2 Starts

5. Todd Hundly
6 million .211-16-35 in 92 Games
Another dissapointment

6. Jeremy Burnitz
6.5 million .215-19-54

7. Denny Neagle
7 million 8-11 5.26
No luck with pitching for this team.

8. Dave Mlicki
5.2 million 4-10 5.34
And WHY is he making this money?

9. Travis Fryman
5.825 million .217-11-55
HOW old is he now?

10. Carlos Delgado
17.2 million .277-33-108
Sure he's a solid player, even very good, but SEVENTEEN MILLION!

Agree? Disagree? Additions? Order Changes? Feel free to comment, that's why it's here.

No list of overpaid players is complete without Kevin Brown who pulled down $15M for 10 starts, 63 innings and a 4.8 era.

And no list of great values is complete without Albert Pujols who put up 34 home runs, 127 rbi's and an ops of .955 for a $600K. Like Sori, he'll be a great value until he hits arbitration.

I tried to avoid using injured players, which is why you didn't see Juan Gonzalez or a bunch of others here. As for Dreifort I did consider him and if I had had honerable err...dishonorable mentions, he would have been there

As for Pujols, he was one of the players whose salary was not listed, but with his numbers at that salary, he would probably fit in nicely at the # 3 slot.

Who could forget the incomparable Albert Belle $12,368,790? When did he last play?

What about Mussina's replacement in Baltimore:
Stats:
Pat Hentgen $4,246,877 ('02 salary)
Season TM G GS CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB SO W L SV HLD BLSV ERA
2001 Bal 9 9 1 0 62.1 51 25 24 7 19 33 2 3 0 0 0 3.47
2002 Bal 4 4 0 0 22.0 31 20 19 6 10 11 0 4 0 0 0 7.77

Not nearly as bad as Brown but still not worth it...Kind of like a Hitchcock.

Wasn't Hentgen injured? I eliminated him because of that. As for Belle, I didn't even think of him. His stats this year: .000-0-0 0AB

What about Mo Vaughn? $12 million gets you:

.259 BA 26 HR 72 RBI 145 SO

No that bad, but not too good either. Plus he's signed for 2 more years a $15 million a pop AND he has a strong no trade clause AND he's a MET AND they gave up Kevin Appier (who had 3.57 ERA as a MET) with a 3.92 ERA and will be playing the WS.

I did consider Mo Vaughn, but I didn't think he was bad enough to be one of the Top 10. Top 20, maybe, but I watched a ton of Mets games this year (No YES Network ) And he played ok. Also, he was coming off an injury. I didn't consider what they make in future years.

Hentgen had Tommy John surgery last year.

The one and only, for Albert only, Belle last played September 2000. I thought he was getting $13M but I guess they wouldn't give him any meal money.

Yup. He should be. He wasn't on the site I was looking at. I knew my list was flawed and I certainly missed a few. Anyone know how much Tejada makes? Oh, and Mr. Mxylsplk, where did you find that salary? Is it a site or something?

Me. I predicted 17-7 3.74 for Wells if I remember correctly.
