What's Up in San Fran?

I visited The Pirates site when I heard about Pokey Reese, and was interested to see that the Bucs had invited ex-Yanks Luis Polonia and Brian Boehringer to spring training. Having relatives outside Philly, I also follow their player moves, so my curiosity became piqued when I read that ex-Philly righty Wayne Gomes is also invited to Bradenton (Pirates), and I remember him being traded to the Giants.

My question: Why are the Giants showing no interest in the people in last year's pen on the one hand, and then trading a valuable player like Vander Wahl for Jay Witasik on the other? What I know: 1. Gomes pitched poorly in SanFran, but he has a bit of a decent track record. 2. Boehringer pitched pretty well in San Fran, though he had three losses. 3. Witasik is obviously not as good as he showed in San Diego and not as bad as he did in New York.

I know Sabean has a decent track record, but these moves just don't seem to make sense. Any theories?

The Giants got damnable financial problems. First, they have a huge mortgage bill for that stadium (it's a team-owned stadium and eventually it will be a windfall, but not now.) And second, they just signed Bonds to a big deal. So I would think they are a team that will unload every non-essential veteran they can and toward the end of spring training will pick up as many minimum-wage types and hope to muddle through on Dusty's back. I don't think they'll be able to pull it off, but every year I say that and every year, almost, they find a way to stay in contention. That's a remarkable and interesting team, for the National League.

The Giants didn't have any use with Vander Wal. He didn't do well with them after he was acquired anyway. He's 35 and the Giants don't want to pay him $1.55 million. Don't forget that Witasick was having a great season with the Padres during the first half of 2001 in the NL pitching in a non-pressure situation.
