Hello All

It's funny. I remember seeing my first Yankee game as if it was yesterday. I am from Canada; Alberta to be a little more precise. We are mostly grown to like hockey, and sometimes Canadian Football (I'll take the NFL over the CFL any day though). I was about 14 years old (5 years ago or so), and remember sitting in my house one day flipping through channels. I couldn't find a thing on TV, and I just happened to switch by a Yankee game on FOX. I switched it back, and instantly I was captivated. The Yankees were dominating the game, and the only place I could sit was the edge of my seat. Yankee Stadium was roaring, louder than any NHL rink I have ever been in, and this is on TV! Every time I watched Mo strike someone out, I cheered as loud as anyone at the Stadium. It was amazing, and ever since then I couldn't think of any other team I would cheer for.

The next year I followed the Yankees religiously, and I have been doing it ever since. I couldn't fathom cheering for any other team, because the atmosphere surrounding the Yankees is electric. I soon ironed out my favorite player, out of the 20 or so that I knew about, and watched him with great interest. Hideki Matsui is his name, and what a player he is. Now don't get me wrong, I love the entire team; DJ, A-Rod, Mo, Moose, all of them. But I am mesmerized by Matsui when he is at the plate. His stance, the way he barely moves his bat, and his stare at the opposing pitcher. I almost feel bad for the other team when he comes up to bat...almost.

In Christmas 2005 I got my very first Yankee jersey. When I don't wear it, I hang it with pride in plain view in my dorm room. Everyone knows I am a Yankee fan, and even if I am the only one in Alberta, I'll be damned if I ever cheer for anyone else.

Re: Hello All

You brought tears to my eyes with your first post

I'm originally from Iowa, a long way away from New York as well. But my dad was a Yankee fan, so I grew up a fan of the team too. The first year I can remember following well was 1995, and watching them lose to Seattle made me sick. Then in 1996 the World Series comeback was unbelievable.

And you're right... the atmosphere surrounding Yankee games is amazing.

Welcome to nyyfans! You've found the right place!

Funny thing is, my Dad is a Toronto Blue Jays fan. Mainly because they are the only Canadian team, but it makes for a good household rivalry, which I usually win.

One other piece of Yankee history I'll never forget: The last home game of 2005. "Ber-nie Ber-nie Ber-nie". Here's hoping he comes back for just one more stint.

Thank you for the welcomes.

Re: Hello All

Welcome. You are right about the Yankees. I can't imagine why anyone would want to root for another team other than the NYYankees!
