The NFL: Week #13

WEEK 13

DPR: Defensive Passer Rating
YPA: Offense Passing Yards Per Attempt (includes sacks and yds lost)
RI: Run Index - the average NFL rankings of Total Rushing Yards per game, the per game sum of Rushing 1st Downs and Rushing TDs, and Yards Per Carry.
DRI: Run Index (defense)
Quality Records are in parentheses.

Thursday, Nov. 30

Baltimore at Cincinnati 8:00 p.m.
Ravens 9-2 (3-2),Cincinnati 6-5 (3-3)
When the Ravens have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Baltimore 24.00 (25th)
DRI: Cincinnati 21.67 (24th)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: Baltimore 5.88 (16th)
DPR: Cincinnati 80.5 (15th)
Advantage: EVEN
When the Bengals have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Cincinnati 20.67 (20th)
DRI: Baltimore 2.67 (2nd)
Advantage: RAVENS
Passing:
YPA: Cincinnati 7.00 (4th)
DPR: Baltimore 60.6 (2nd)
Advantage: RAVENS
Intangibles: I haven't been high on Baltimore all year. I'm still not. However, high or not, the Ravens have the inside track at the # 2 seed in the AFC playoffs and can clinch the AFC North with a win. Cincy needs to win this game in order to keep their playoff chances strong. The Bengals have 3 quality wins but two of them were vs NFC teams. Cincy has won their last two games, but beating the defenseless Saints and the hapless Browns fails to impress.
Ravens 27-24

Sunday, Dec. 3

San Francisco at New Orleans 1:00 p.m.
49ers 5-6 (1-3), Saints 7-4 (0-3)
When the 49ers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: San Francisco 7.33 (6th)
DRI: New Orleans 26.00 (26th)
Advantage: 49ERS
Passing:
YPA: San Francisco 5.72 (20th)
DPR: New Orleans 91.6 (27th)
Advantage: 49ERS
When the Saints have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: New Orleans 26.33 (30th)
DRI: San Francisco 20.33 (21st)
Advantage: 49ERS
Passing:
YPA: New Orleans 7.90 (1st)
DPR: San Francisco 92.6 (28th)
Advantage: SAINTS
Intangibles: The Saints are on top of the NFL in YPA. They are a poor man's Colts. The Niners are terrible on the road: 1-4 with the only win at lowly Detroit.
Saints 34-16

Indianapolis at Tennessee 1:00 p.m.
Colts 10-1 (5-1), Titans 4-7 (1-6)
When the Colts have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Indianapolis 10.00 (10th)
DRI: Tennessee 29.33 (30th)
Advantage: COLTS
Passing:
YPA: Indianapolis 7.37 (2nd)
DPR: Tennessee 87.7 (24th)
Advantage: COLTS
When the Titans have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Tennessee 10.33 (T-11th)
DRI: Indianapolis 31.00 (32nd)
Advantage: TITANS
Passing:
YPA: Tennessee 5.26 (28th)
DPR: Indianapolis 83.9 (21st)
Advantage: COLTS
Intangibles: The Titans are being remembered for their mounumental upsets: Giants, Redskins. They lost to Baltimore by only a single point. However, Indy rules the AFC South and tends to crush any joy their divisional foes manage to accumulate.
Colts 31-27

Atlanta at Washington 1:00 p.m.
Atlanta 5-6 (2-4), Washington 4-7 (3-3)
When the Falcons have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Atlanta 1.33 (1st)
DRI: Washington 15.33 (15th)
Advantage: FALCONS
Passing:
YPA: Atlanta 4.78 (30th)
DPR: Washington 98.0 (30th)
Advantage: EVEN
When the Redskins have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Washington 10.33 (T-11th)
DRI: Atlanta 10.33 (9th)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: Washington 5.85 (17th)
DPR: Atlanta 88.2 (T-25th)
Advantage: REDSKINS
Intangibles: FedEx Field should feel like home to Michael Vick. He probably couldn't wait to get out of Atlanta.
Falcons 24-23

Kansas City at Cleveland 1:00 p.m.
Kansas City 7-4 (3-2), Cleveland 3-8 (1-7)
When the Chiefs have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Kansas City 8.33 (T-8th)
DRI: Cleveland 18.33 (18th)
Advantage: CHIEFS
Passing:
YPA: Kansas City 6.32 (9th)
DPR: Cleveland 69.6 (6th)
Advantage: BROWNS
When the Browns have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Cleveland 29.67 (T-31st)
DRI: Kansas City 11.33 (11th)
Advantage: CHIEFS
Passing:
YPA: Cleveland 4.87 (29th)
DPR: Kansas City 83.0 (19th)
Advantage: CHIEFS
Intangibles: Time will tell if the decision to replace Huard with Green at QB was wise. In the meantime, Kansas City must take care of the pitiful Browns before their big home game against the Ravens next week.
Chiefs 20-17

Minnesota at Chicago 1:00 p.m.
Minnesota 5-6 (2-2), Chicago 9-2 (3-1)
When the Vikings have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Minnesota 19.33 (19th)
DRI: Chicago 2.00 (8th)
Advantage: BEARS
Passing:
YPA: Minnesota 5.66 (22nd)
DPR: Chicago 60.0 (1st)
Advantage: BEARS
When the Bears have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Chicago 19.00 (18th)
DRI: Minnesota 1.00 (1st)
Advantage: VIKINGS
Passing:
YPA: Chicago 6.27 (10th)
DPR: Minnesota 77.2 (9th)
Advantage: EVEN
Intangibles: The Vikings are very good against the run, but Chicago is primarily a passing team. Don't expect Minny to generate much of a running game against the Bears front seven. The Vikings solid numbers are more a reflection of their good start, but they've been a mess ever since that spanking New England gave them a month ago. Look for Good Rex to emerge this week.
Bears 27-7

San Diego at Buffalo 1:00 p.m.
San Diego 9-2 (2-2) Buffalo 5-6 (1-5)
When the Chargers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: San Diego 2.33 (2nd)
DRI: Buffalo 28.00 (T-28th)
Advantage: CHARGERS
Passing:
YPA: San Diego 6.71 (6th)
DPR: Buffalo 88.2 (T-25th)
Advantage: CHARGERS
When the Bills have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Buffalo 25.67 (27th)
DRI: San Diego 11.67 (12th)
Advantage: CHARGERS
Passing:
YPA: Buffalo 5.44 (25th)
DPR: San Diego 78.5 (13th)
Advantage: CHARGERS
Intangibles: The Bills are coming off a big win over a quality opponent, but reality will sink in this week. SD barely survived the Raiders, but I attribute that to a letdown after beating the Broncos on the road. Merriman returns this week.
Chargers 31-20

NY Jets at Green Bay 1:00 p.m.
NY Jets 6-5 (1-4), Green Bay 4-7 (0-4)
When the Jets have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: NY Jets 17.00 (17th)
DRI: Green Bay 16.00 (16th)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: NY Jets 5.95 (12th)
DPR: Green Bay 87.0 (23rd)
Advantage: JETS
When the Packers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Green Bay 22.00 (T-22nd)
DRI: NY Jets 26.33 (27th)
Advantage: PACKERS
Passing:
YPA: Green Bay 5.93 (13th)
DPR: NY Jets 78.8 (14th)
Advantage: EVEN
Intangibles: This isn't a good matchup for the Jets as the Packers should be able to mount a strong rushing attack against the Jets defense. Green Bay got robbed by the refs in Seattle on MNF.
Packers 23-20

Arizona at St. Louis 1:00 p.m.
Arizona 2-9 (0-4), St. Louis 5-6 (1-5)
When the Cardinals have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Arizona 30.67 (32nd)
DRI: St. Louis 30.67 (31st)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: Arizona 5.83 (18th)
DPR: St. Louis 83.1 (20th)
Advantage: EVEN
When the Rams have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: St. Louis 21.33 (21st)
DRI: Arizona 25.33 (25th)
Advantage: RAMS
Passing:
YPA: St. Louis 5.96 (11th)
DPR: Arizona 81.8 (T-17th)
Advantage: RAMS
Intangibles: Why couldn't this game be on NFLN? NFL arrogance continues to amaze me. The Rams have only one tough game left; at home vs Chicago. Seattle is not going to lose 4 games, however.
Rams 31-24

Detroit at New England 1:00 p.m.
Detroit 2-9 (0-3), New England 8-3 (3-3)
When the Lions have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Detroit 26.00 (T-28th)
DRI: New England 3.00 (3rd)
Advantage: PATRIOTS
Passing:
YPA: Detroit 5.91 (14th)
DPR: New England 68.8 (5th)
Advantage: PATRIOTS
When the Patriots have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: New England 12.00 (13th)
DRI: Detroit 21.33 (23rd)
Advantage: PATRIOTS
Passing:
YPA: New England 6.34 (8th)
DPR: Detroit 101.2 (32nd)
Advantage: PATRIOTS
Intangibles: The Pats won't be truly tested until the playoffs. The Lions have some weapons on offense, however.
Patriots 38-20

Jacksonville at Miami 4:05 p.m.
Jacksonville 6-5 (3-1), Miami 5-6 (2-2)
When the Jaguars have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Jacksonville 5.00 (3rd)
DRI: Miami 3.67 (4th)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: Jacksonville 5.89 (15th)
DPR: Miami 77.6 (12th)
Advantage: DOLPHINS
When the Dolphins have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Miami 23.00 (T-22nd)
DRI: Jacksonville 6.33 (6th)
Advantage: JAGUARS
Passing:
YPA: Miami 5.42 (26th)
DPR: Jacksonville 63.0 (3rd)
Advantage: JAGUARS
Intangibles: Miami is repeating a pattern from 2005. Start off slow, then sneak up on teams. They won't sneak up on the Jags, however.
Jaguars 16-13

Houston at Oakland 4:05 p.m.
Houston 3-8 (2-4), Oakland 2-9 (0-7)
When the Texans have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Houston 23.00 (T-22nd)
DRI: Oakland 19.00 (19th)
Advantage: RAIDERS
Passing:
YPA: Houston 5.65 (23rd)
DPR: Oakland 72.7 (7th)
Advantage: RAIDERS
When the Raiders have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Oakland 25.00 (26th)
DRI: Houston 20.67 (22nd)
Advantage: TEXANS
Passing:
YPA: Oakland 4.35 (32nd)
DPR: Houston 95.0 (29th)
Advantage: EVEN
Intangibles: Look for the Texans to abandon the run early on and play right into Oaklands hands. The Raiders continue to be suprisingly good against the pass.
Raiders 20-10

Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh 4:15 p.m.
Tampa Bay 3-8 (1-7), Pittsburgh 4-7 (2-5)
When the Buccaneers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Tampa Bay 26.00 (T-28th)
DRI: Pittsburgh 7.67 (7th)
Advantage: STEELERS
Passing:
YPA: Tampa Bay 4.62 (31st)
DPR: Pittsburgh 81.8 (T-17th)
Advantage: STEELERS
When the Steelers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Pittsburgh 16.00 (15th)
DRI: Tampa Bay 19.67 (20th)
Advantage: STEELERS
Passing:
YPA: Pittsburgh 6.35 (7th)
DPR: Tampa Bay 99.6 (31st)
Advantage: STEELERS
Intangibles: Let's be honest. When Big Ben put his head through a windshield, you knew it wasn't going to be a good year in Pittsburgh. And we all know that the Steelers are much better than 4-7.
Steelers 42-3

Dallas at NY Giants 4:15 p.m.
Dallas 7-4 (2-2), NY Giants 6-5 (1-4)
When the Cowboys have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Dallas 8.33 (T-8th)
DRI: NY Giants 12.67 (13th)
Advantage: COWBOYS
Passing:
YPA: Dallas 7.15 (3rd)
DPR: NY Giants 81.2 (16th)
Advantage: COWBOYS
When the Giants have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: NY Giants 6.33 (4th)
DRI: Dallas 5.67 (5th)
Advantage: EVEN
Passing:
YPA: NY Giants 5.73 (19th)
DPR: Dallas 67.2 (4th)
Advantage: COWBOYS
Intangibles: Since Romo arrived, the Boys moved up to # 3 in the YPA rankings. Sure, this is a do-or-die game for the Giants, but Dallas is looking to avenge the beating the G-Men gave them in front of a national audience. Dallas # 4 ranking in defensive passer rating is even more impressive when you factor in the Colts game. Dallas is the best team in the NFC and has held up well against the AFC (3-1 record). Their only AFC loss was to the Jags on week # 1 when Drew Bledsoe tossed 3 INTs. The Giants are falling apart and the only way they come out with a "W", is if Dallas beats themselves.
Cowboys 33-24

Seattle at Denver 8:15 p.m.
Seattle 7-4 (1-2), Denver 7-4 (3-3)
When the Seahawks have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Seattle 12.67 (14th)
DRI: Denver 11.00 (10th)
Advantage: BRONCOS
Passing:
YPA: Seattle 5.36 (27th)
DPR: Denver 77.4 (T-10th)
Advantage: BRONCOS
When the Broncos have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Denver 8.00 (7th)
DRI: Seattle 18.00 (17th)
Advantage: BRONCOS
Passing:
YPA: Denver 5.68 (21st)
DPR: Seattle 86.3 (22nd)
Advantage: EVEN
Intangibles: Jay Cutler makes his NFL debut. The poor Seattle pass defense is a good place to start.
Broncos 24-20

Monday, Nov. 13

Carolina at Philadelphia 8:30 p.m.
Carolina 6-5 (2-2), Philadelphia 5-6 (1-4)
When the Panthers have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Carolina 16.33 (16th)
DRI: Philadelphia 28.00 (T-28th)
Advantage: PANTHERS
Passing:
YPA: Carolina 5.54 (24th)
DPR: Philadelphia 73.7 (8th)
Advantage: EAGLES
When the Eagles have the ball:
Rushing:
RI: Philadelphia 7.00 (5th)
DRI: Carolina 13.67 (14th)
Advantage: EAGLES
Passing:
YPA: Philadelphia 6.84 (5th)
DPR: Carolina 77.4 (T-10th)
Advantage: EVEN
Intangibles: Despite their dissapointing season, the Eagles have put up some nifty numbers. Unfortunately, rushing defense isn't among them. The Panthers running game is starting to come around. That's bad news for Philly.
Panthers 24-10

Completely random but I thought this should go in the thread since RIYankee is so good with those metrics that nobody can ever find

Is Champ Bailey is as good as they say? Is he really a shutdown corner? It's hard to tell. Same with Hall. Who are the top shutdown corners in the league? I'm curious. Any help would be appreciated

KC Joyner had this to say about Hall

Quote:
Overrated
1. DeAngelo Hall, Atlanta Falcons -- John Madden knighted Hall as a great cornerback after Hall had a fairly good game against Terrell Owens in the "Monday Night Football" 2005 season opener. Since then, the hype machine has been going full bore and he is now seen as one of the best corners in the NFL.
The thing I don't understand is how Hall's reputation keeps surviving after each Sunday's highlight reels. Hall has given up a 40-plus yard pass play in four of his last eight games and three of these have been 60 or more yards. This is the primary reason he is allowing nearly 11 yards per attempt. How anyone can call him a shutdown corner this year is simply beyond me.
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insid..._kc&id=2679672

He gave some stats on who he feels are the overrated/underrated corners of the league.

Ryan, this might shed some light...

Yeah I always thought that about Hall. I see him routinely get burned for long plays but (not watching a lot of Atlanta games) I've heard that they routinely play him in man to man with no safety help which is why his YPA might be higher than usual.

Any thoughts on Champ?

Firstly, you did this again! Excellent. Well, I have a number of games that I disagree with you on (I bet you can guess one) so here goes. I agree with you on this game and that it'll be very close. With 3 minutes left in the 1st quarter, it's all tied up at 0 so that helps my prediction. I also agree that I'm not high on the Ravens. Maybe I'm underating the 9-2 team, but I just don't really like them.

Like the Ravens, I am not sold at all on the Saints. I see them being upset in this game at home. The 49ers really aren't that bad.

I hope you are right here as I want that 2nd round pick to be as high as possible. I have absolutely no clue who will win this game.

I really think Cleveland is going to win this game. At home, they aren't a bad team. They and the refs beat the Jets. They lost to the Ravens on a 52 yard field goal. They aren't bad. I think they pull off the victory.

Ummmmm, this is ridiculous. Firstly, the Packers run offense isn't that good. Secondly, the Jets run defense has gotten better of late. Thirdly, you just know that Favre will throw at least 2 interceptions against this revived Mangini run defense. Plus, Pennington should have a good game against a lackluster pass defense and no matter what you think about him, he will, for the most part, make good decisions and not throw interceptions. Green Bay may have gotten robbed by the refs on MNF for that RFP call, but they still probably would have lost. And, if Seattle didn't turn the ball over like 20 times, it wouldn't have been close at all. You can bet the Jets won't be turning the ball over like that. 27-13 Jets with the Packers lone TD coming in garbage time.

Yeah, the Lions stink. You guys will kill them. I'd be surprised if you gave up 20 points to be honest. I see a 31-9 game.

I think this will be a close game and as much as it pains me, I have to root for the Dolphins as the Jags are main WC competition for the Jets.

I just don't see the Raiders scoring 20 points... Then again, maybe their defense can score 14 of those points. The Texans abandoned the Jets against the Jets because we took a big lead and they weren't gaining anything on the run.

Steelers will win but I bet it's a close game.

I think Cutler will turn out to be a pretty good QB, but will definitely struggle this year. (I actually, during the draft, predicted he wouldn't be good in the NFL, but all the analysts have turned me on him. I still maintain that at the very least, it will take him some time to adjust to the NFL). I'm very interested to see him play in the NFL after watching him for 4 years at Vandy, but have to root against him this year as the Broncos are WC competition for the Jets.

I predict he throws 3 INT's in this game and the Seahawks do win.

Re: The NFL: Week #13

At the risk of being considered a huge homer, I'm taking the Giants over the Cowboys, 20-13. My rationale is that the defensive intensity is uplifted by the returns of Osi Umeniyora, Brandon Short and Sam Madison; big improvements to each level of the defense. I think they'll come out flying around and give their best, most complete, effort of 2006. I know they have lost 3 straight, but only Jacksonville was the start to finish clunker. They dominated Chicago for a half. They dominated Tennesee for 3.5 quarters. Sunday, they play well all game.

And as far as Eli Manning goes, here are his individual ratings during the 3 game losing streak: 28.3, 51.9, 59.1. That won't continue.

I'm glad Cincy won, but how can anyone take the Ravens seriously if they can only muster 7 points against that defense?

Mark, from now on, if you want to get an extra "right" pick, pick the Jets... We're a good team.

I'm pretty sure this exchange will happen in the next few days:

Peyton: Bro, we got beat by a 60 yarder! That's gotta be the worst way to lose!

Eli: So?!? We got beat by a Gramatica!

Rams are officially done. And Bulger is calling out some of his teammates. Martz is gone, but its still a dysfunctional organization:
