Yanks give brushback to Sox fans on tickets

Yankees deny groups for Boston games

_____
The Evil Empire has done it to you again, Red Sox fans.

Yankee Stadium will be less red and less loud this season when the Red Sox visit because the Yankees have decided to ban the sale of group tickets for the nine Sox games in the Bronx.

Only the Boston media would turn this into a "brushback". Come on... FWIW, if we - as Yankee fans - wanted to buy group tickets for one of the Sox/Yanks games (say, for our forum party) we wouldn't be able to either. Nor the Mets, apparently, for that matter.

There are plenty of tour bus operators in upstate NY and in PA (and other surrounding states) that are out of luck as well. Everyone is getting screwed, not just Sox fans. It's not like they're saying they won't sell them to anyone from Mass...

The Red Sox said they have no such ban on group sales at Fenway Park for the 10 Yankees games scheduled.
Everything I've heard is that Fenway is sold out for the season. Can you even get single tickets for any of the Sox/Yanks games at Fenway?

If anything, this screws New Yorkers more than Boston fans. Boston/NY games are often events that bring out large parties of people who don't often go to games, so a large number of Yankee fans are being screwed just as much, if not more, than the smaller number of Boston fans who drive down.

I think we all know what the real reason is, why should the Yankees offer discount tickets for a game they know will sell out anyways.

I *think* the Sox had a limited number of group seats for the Yankees series, but they were quickly snapped up.

What the Sox did do was offer a variety of "10 Game season tickets" that included a Yankees game, but also forced you to buy games against the Fighting Seaweed of Tampa,

The Sox as of yesterday have perhaps 200,000 tickets left unsold for the season, which for the most aprt are standing room, obstructive view or overpriced box seats in RF. ( and most are scattered singles, very few pairs left )

Why turn this into an anti-yankee article? Gosh... these games are top shelf games... hearing that groups snatched up 80-100 tickets at a time really ticks me off. Well... just that as a fan who would buy 1-4 tickets, the article makes it seem like i'm not important in getting what I want.

I don't see how this has anything at all to do with screwing sox fans. they just want to make sure everyone has a better shot of getting tickets. Sheesh, paranoid much?

All this is about is the Yankees trying to maximize their revenue by not allowing any group sales discounts for their hottest games. Many teams do this.

Also, I would also suspect that they made a limited amount of group sales tickets (no discount) available, for these games, to their top clients. You need to give your top clients some quality games, in order for them to continue buying group tickets to the Rays, Tigers, Royals, etc year after year....it doesn't make business sense for them to sell tickets to a Red Sox game to a group who is only going to patronize Yankee Stadium once a year. If you're going to do that, they might as well sell those seats through Ticketmaster at full price and share in the TM service fee.

Boss limiting tickets to Yankees-Red Sox games: Why?

Supposedly, Steinbrenner is limiting the amount of group tickets being sold at Yankees-Sox games at the Stadium. My question is why? Has anyone heard anything about this? One of my Red Sox friends said he is doing it to limit the amount of Red Sox fans at games. Anyone have any insight on this?

Red Sox chairman, Tom Werner, mentions it in this interview:

Someone posted on this forum before that group tickets are cheaper and Yankees want to maximize revenue on premium games. I don't know what the real story is.

This explanation seems more likely than an attempt to limit the amount of Sox fans. Tickets to Sox-Yankees games are a premium and it makes sense to try and maximize the revenue. I am also not sure how limiting group sales would lessen the amount of Sox fans going to the game.

I think it's more likely to be a case of wanting to maximize revenue too. I don't think the Yankees care if there are a lot of Red Sox fans in the stadium because even if they were to sell lots tickets to Red Sox fans there will still be more Yankee fans. It's all about getting the most money they possibly can during the series.

I had heard that as well. They were upset about it on Redsoxnation.

Also, a NY paper (can't remember which one) ran an article about how the Yankees were shutting out the "average fan" who wants to see the Sox/Yankees game with group sales. They said it was unfair, and becoming harder to get tickets to the game. One week later he limited group sales.

Here's my take on this:

Limiting group ticket sales means that large groups would have to pick another game to go to. They will likely get tickets to "other" games against teams that are less likely to sell out. These groups plan on attending games regardless of who it's against (in general), therefore the Yankees end up selling more tickets to other games while still selling out the Sox games.

It's just sound business practice.

At least the Yankees don't yet have tiered pricing practices like the Mets. But it's coming.
