Johnson's injury history and his declining defense made him a risky, if not poor, choice as a 4th OF. As a 5th OF his ability to hit LHP would be nice, but he still lacks power. Thames gives the Yanks a big power bat off the bench which is more valuable in the role he's signed for. |

i agree. last yr he was smart in a pretty conventional way and wrote some big checks. this offseason he has been a ninja, very nimble with some great unexpected moves, starting w granderson and sacking bruney. not only very solid for this yr, but it also sets us up well for next offseason. |

Re: 2010 Offseason Hot Stove thread
Is it reasonable (or unreasonable) to believe Thames can replicate just about (or at least within .015 OPS) his career OPS vs. LHP?

It is possible that he didn't want to play for the Yankees. Or if the money was comparable he would prefer LA over New York. $800k in LA may be a better deal in his mind than $900k in New York. |

The Yankees didn't want Johnson to play for them, not the other way around. That is, they thought Winn was a better player, period. |

Re: 2010 Offseason Hot Stove thread
Thames > Johnson. They are close enough vs. LHP, Johnson's (relatively) lower defensive value and absurdly bad split vs. RHP makes Thames much more likely to produce over the course of the season.

Re: 2010 Offseason Hot Stove thread
Another excellent bargain basement signing here. Even more impressive when combined with Winn's incentive-laden contract, which was news to all of us, I think.
Quite an offseason for Cashman, imo. I like the way he cobbled together reasonable and inexpensive LF options, got an inning eating SP who was coming off a great year, got a DH who has an amazing OBP, and got a top CF in the prime of his career. We're younger and arguably more talented across the board. Now, guys like Granderson and Johnson have to produce in important situations ala Damon and Matsui and we'll be in great shape. We had to get younger and we did. We should also be less prone to injury, presuming that DHing will help to protect Nick Johnson's body. |

I think both are awful but UZR favors Thames a tiny bit in RF, where Thames or Johnson will most likely play. I guess Johnson can still have more defensive value since he could play CF and LF better and it's very possible (if not likely, I don't watch these two very much so I don't know for sure) that Johnson is actually better in RF. Even then I think the difference in their inevitable ABs vs. RHPs will allow Thames to have better production over the course of a year. |

Re: 2010 Offseason Hot Stove thread
Are we taking the 2008 Red Sox Approach To Achieving Historical Pitching Depth and applying it to the outfield?
WTF are we gonna do with 20 outfielders who are worse, or at best, not better than Gardner? |

There weren't any redeeming qualities about Penny and Smoltz. Both were either old or mediocre and coming off shoulder injuries. |
