My Thoughts on Abreu/Lidle... I don't like it...

Purely emotional reaction. Well, until I dug into the stats a little:

I have to admit, when I looked up Abreu's stats for this season, I was astonished by his lack of power this season. (And, he plays in a hitters' ballpark.) Maybe the 2004 Bobby Abreu will show up, but I fear that what seemed to happen to him after the 2005 HR Derby (at the All-Star game)...he messed up his swing...may continue to happen to him as he eyes that short porch in right field.

On the plus side, however, he's a pretty big OBP guy (.427 this season, despite hitting only .277), so that works. Also, I have to admit I didn't realize he steals as many bases as he does.

At first I was so-so this trade, but his OBP is starting to win me over.

As far as Lidle goes...well, consider anything he does as a bonus.

Complaining for the sake of complaining is retarded.

Complaining for the sake of complaining is what gives we Yankee fans a bad name.

I like the trade from the standpoint that we replace Sheffield when the season is through (we shouldn't pick up his option) with a guy that gets on base, swipes a few bases, and doesn't swing for the fences every AB. Cory Lidle....eh, no comment.

    Lidle's better than Ponson, though.

CTan, I respect the effort you put into the writing as well as your opinion, but I had to stop reading as soon as you cited Bernie's heart as the reason you don't want Abreu. Abreu instantly makes this lineup better in all aspects. He hits better than Bernie, plays better D than Bernie, runs better than Bernie, gets on base better than Bernie, and despite low power numbers, still has more power than Bernie. Heart is a nice thing to have, but Bubba Crosby has a lot of heart too.

we don't need him to hit for power. bat him third. that gives us 1-2-3 hitters with 30+ SB potential and great OBP in front of the big power hitters, and also shows him we have confidence that he can produce. speed at the top, power in the middle, and patience throughout the lineup. you also have to take into account that hes a plus defender with a strong arm and hes played 150+ games every year since 1998. the fact that the best guy we gave up was CJ Henry who may be a first round pick bust
(hasnt been playing well in the minors), and at the very least wont make it to the majors for 3 or 4 years minimum, this is a steal for the yankees, especially since it appears we dont have to pick up the option. you have to like this deal if you're a yankee fan. reminds me of the justice deal in 2000.
