But it's not as if MLB needs a salary floor or anything, right Mr. Selig?
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/danalexa...le-in-history/
Almost no one in the Houston Astros organization is making big league money. The highest-paid player is pitcher Erik Bedard, who is playing on a one-year, $1.15 million contract. No one else is pulling in over $1 million a year. That is, no one besides Jim Crane, who owns the worst team in the majors and is quietly making more money than any baseball owner in history.

The Astros are on pace to rake in an estimated $99 million in operating income this season. That is nearly as much as the estimated operating income of the previous six World Series championship teams — combined.

Yet the Astros are 43-86, worst in the majors. Of the 270 Major League Baseball teams who have taken the field since 2005, none have finished with a worse winning percentage than Houston’s.

They have become so profitable thanks to slashed payroll expenses and soaring television revenues.

Since becoming the Astros’ owner in 2011, Crane has gutted the team of its most expensive players while building up the farm system. Over the course of this season, the team will pay its players an estimated $21 million in salary and bonuses. That is down $56 million from 2011, when Crane bought the team.

The Astros opened this season with a league-low $26 million active payroll and have since cut it to under $13 million, according to the Houston Chronicle. Houston traded or released four of its five players making over $1 million.

Apparently there is some disagreement in Houston with Forbes' figures :

We all know that Selig is a megadouchenozzlewad....
But for the fans that lobby for a salary cap, they have no quams whatsoever about owners making boatloads of cash in this manner.
Let's remember, none of us have ever payed a nickel to go and watch an owner at a baseball stadium.

The CBA financial implications were never meant to prevent this from happening, they were designed for the sole purpose of slamming the Yankees' financial might.

    My sentiments exactly.
If this doesn't PROVE that Selig's agenda is to hammer down on the Yankees, nothing ever will.

Fire Cashman, but Hal Steinbrenner is the root of Yankee woes.

I never got why people think Selig or MLB has something out for the Yankees, they are the biggest cash crop in the MLB. Selig is a useless a-hole, but he does not have a personal agenda against the Yankees (maybe A-Rod though).

Hammering down on the Yankees' might is definitely an agenda to be sure the Yankees don't succeed as they have in the past.
The A-Rod situation also helps prove the case. One has to wonder if Alex played for the Mets, would he be under such scrutiny?

Two ways to look at it. If there was an "anti-Yankee" bias (which I don't believe) then maybe ARod does not get suspended, OR maybe he gets 50 games.

A 211 game suspension (especially if upheld) would SIGNIFICANTLY help the Yankees.

    Payroll-wise, you are correct.
But who do the Yankees bring in to replace his production at thirdbase while he's out?
To me, Selig never liked the Yankees all the days that he owned the Brewers. And now that George is gone, he's putting the hammer down.

If the Yankees had $25 million to spend and could plan for it in the offseason (as opposed to this year's injuries) I'm pretty sure they could replace A-Rod's production in one way or another.

I don't think it's the Yankees as much as Selig wanting to make things better for the small market teams. And I'm not even sure the current version of Yankees ownership minds -- I think they want to work within system to make as much money as they can and still win. They just haven't figured out how to do that last part.

That's funny. Because other fans are constantly telling me that he's in bed with the Yankees.

Max Scherzer was bidding to become the 2nd person in MLB history to go (20-1). He left trailing in the game. Bottom of the 9th, Tigers losing 6-3, Scherzer is going to fall to (19-2)...when the Tigers rally for 4 runs, capped by a walk-off 3-run HR by Torii Hunter, and win the game 7-6. ND for Scherzer.

    http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/...boston-red-sox

The Boston Red Sox designated once-promising power pitcher Daniel Bard for assignment on Sunday to make room on their 40-man roster for some new arrivals.

Bard, a 28-year-old right-handed reliever and one-time starter, was one of the most dominant late-inning pitchers in the majors between 2009 and 2011, but issues with his confidence and injuries derailed his career in Boston. He pitched in only two games for the Red Sox this season before he was sent to the minors.

After being farmed out, Bard pitched just 6 1/3 innings and threw 10 wild pitches with 23 walks among three stops: Double-A Portland and recently the Gulf Coast League and short-season Lowell.
