After watching him last night, I'm not surprised. It was a struggle, but he managed not to let it get completely away from him. The first inning of his starts this year have been rough.

For the 33rd time since 1916, three teammates allowed at least 2 home runs each in a game when Cleveland beat Philadelphia 14-2.

For the 11th time since 1916, two pitchers in a game pitched at least 8 innings with at least 8 strikeouts and no walks. The Mets Jeremy Hefner lost when Brandon Lyon threw a walkoff wild pitch. Kevin Slowey got a no-decision after pitching 8 innings for Miami, who won 2-1.

I'm wondering if that's why he was taken out a little early. He looked absolutely dominant in the 6th inning (That changeup/fastball combo he had going that inning wasn't fair) and looked really good in the 5th. I know they needed some baserunners in the 7th, but he's not exactly a slouch with the bat. I was pretty mad that Johnson took him out after that inning, especially considering the Nats bullpen troubles.

While Francona enjoyed watching baseballs fly out of the park, his highlight came in the eighth inning when 42-year-old Jason Giambi used a headfirst slide to beat out an infield hit with the Indians leading by 12 runs.

"If you're a young player and after you watch that and you don't run a ball out, you should be humiliated," Francona said. "I was so damn excited ... that's a guy who cares."

Said Giambi: "I felt like Mr. Potato Head. My body parts were all over the field. I don't care how old you are, when you smell a hit, you want a hit."

Also laughing at "body parts all over the field". I don't think I've ever heard it described that way before.

I have a feeling Strasburg is going to be one of those pitchers who battles injuries throughout his career, e.g., Kerry Wood.

And they are doing everything they can to prevent this. It would not be good for baseball for a talent like this to wasted. I support what Rizzo did with SS last year.

Toronto's J.A. Happ became the 209th pitcher (209th time, not by 209 different pitchers) since 1916 to have at least 7 walks in 3 2/3 or fewer innings. Edwin Encarnacion grounded into double plays in his first two plate appearances including an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

The Yankees have 13 stolen bases and 7 stolen bases allowed for a +6 differential. Here are all the MLB teams with a +6 or better:

Milwaukee: +16 (on pace for +96)
    Baltimore: +10
    Colorado: +10
    Kansas City: +10
    Yankees: +6
    Minnesota: +6
    Oakland: +6

Last year Miami led MLB with a +61.

    Thank you.

In the top of the tenth, the Mets were tied 5-5 at Atlanta. With Jordany Valdespin on first and two out, the Met announcers were surprised reliever Bobby Parnell was left in to bat. The announcers understood a desire to have Parnell pitch another inning but said that in the likely event that Parnell got out the Mets would need to pitch at least two more innings to have a chance to win. On the first pitch, Parnell showed bunt and Valdespin stole second. Then Mike Baxter pinch hit for Parnell and was hit by pitch. Has anybody seen a pinch-hitter used in the middle of a plate appearance for a strategic reason? I've seen it happen when the batter was injured or ejected but I don't remember seeing it happen for a strategic reason before. The Mets scored 2 in the tenth.

Roy Halladay sorta declined really, really hard. 8ER in his last start and 9ER today. He's had three starts with 7ER+ so far.

Josh Hamilton also has a .551OPS.

    Halladay's headed to the DL.

"My shoulder is bothering me," the Phillies right-hander, who has been suffering through a down-and-up-and-down-again season, revealed after allowing nine runs in 2 1/3 innings in a 14-2 loss at Citizens Bank Park.

Halladay allowed four hits, walked four and hit Marlins cleanup hitter Justin Ruggiano twice. Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria did most of the damage with a bases-loaded triple and a grand slam.

"It started the morning after I pitched against Pittsburgh [on April 24]," Halladay said. "I woke up and didn't really think anything of it. It was just kind of regular soreness. This kind of progressed over the last two weeks or so. It's right shoulder discomfort."

The two-time Cy Young Award winner, who turns 36 in a week, is expected to fly to Los Angeles to be examined by noted orthopedist Lewis Yocum. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said it's likely Halladay will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Halladay said this is different from the shoulder strain that landed him on the DL last year
I said earlier that I noticed that he was soaked in sweat during one of this first starts and it was chilly that day. He looked completely wiped out, but it could have been the lingering effects of the bug that was going around during ST. When he had a couple of great outings after that, I figured he'd gotten his strength back. I hope he didn't do more damage by trying to continue to pitch through it.

I know it's still early, but I wonder how worried the Angels are. True, he did have an off-the-charts run at the beginning of the season, but after that, he certainly came back down to earth.
