Marvin Miller, the first executive director of the MLB Players Association, died this morning at the age of 95, Yahoo's Jeff Passan reports (on Twitter). Condolences to Miller's family and the MLBPA.

Miller led the MLBPA from its inception in 1966 until 1982. Under Miller the MLBPA worked to overturn baseball's reserve clause in a decision that led to free agency. The association also obtained many other rights for players, including the right to salary arbitration."

Longoria signs an extension:

Evan Longoria wants to be with the Tampa Bay Rays for his entire big league career.

The slugging third baseman agreed Monday to a 10-year contract that adds six guaranteed seasons and $100 million.

"I always wanted to be kind of a benchmark player ... the guy that you could think about or associate with the organization," Longoria said. "My goal from Day 1 was to be the first player that played their whole career here, to be the first guy that came into the organization and went out in the organization, and played all the years in between. There's no better place for me."

The agreement with the three-time All-Star incorporates the remainder of the 27-year-old's existing contract, which called for him to earn $36.6 million over the next four seasons. The new deal includes a team option for 2023 that could make the deal worth $144.6 million over 11 years.

I'm sure he'll get in now that he's dead and won't be able to enjoy it. It's like they do that sh*t on purpose sometimes.

Longo amazes me. How many tens of millions of dollars will he have left on the table when his career is said and done? Probably many. There's certainly something to be said for the value of security, I guess.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Braves have reached an agreement with free agent B.J. Upton.

The terms of the agreement are not yet known, and Upton still has to pass a physical. But this baby is all but official. Upton also drew interest this offseason from the Phillies, Rangers, Nationals and Giants before settling on Atlanta, where he will start in center field. The 28-year-old batted .246/.298/.454 with 28 homers and 31 stolen bases in 146 games this past summer for the Rays.

Less than a month after acquiring shortstop Yunel Escobar in a monster 12-player deal with Toronto, the Miami Marlins have shipped him to the Tampa Bay Rays for a minor league infielder.


Miami acquired Escobar as part of a package that saw it send shortstop Jose Reyes, left-handed pitcher Mark Buehrle and right-hander Josh Johnson among others north of the border.

The Rangers and Phillies had advanced talks about a trade involving Michael Young earlier this week, and MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan says the deal could happen today. Young is expected to waive his no-trade clause to approve the move to Philadelphia.

You have to give Texas credit. If this deal goes through, they may actually have the funds to re-sign Hamilton and sign Grienke as well. Wouldn't surprise me if they manage to land Upton on top of it all.

Came off a 72 OPS+ season, after putting up a 125 OPS+ in 2011. Considering he was a Ranger his whole career, that's pretty impressive they were willing to cut ties with him. Can't imagine something like that happening with the Yankee lifer.

I would have taken a gamble on him to rotate at 3B/DH/SS/2B. I expect him to have a bounce-back year in 2013.

He had a nice, fluid motion. Not that I'd want to see a blowout loss, but considering that they sometimes happen, I'd like to see him pitch an inning or two for the Yankees.
