Apparently, RA Dickey has been playing all season with a strained oblique.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports...71a_story.html
MIAMI — New York Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey’s best season yet ended with a no-decision and some surprising news: He’ll have surgery Oct. 18.
After pitching six innings in a 4-3, 11-inning loss to the Miami Marlins, Dickey revealed he has pitched since late April with a strained oblique. Following the operation, Dickey said, he expects to be ready for the start of spring training.

It's not the 27 World Championships that drive the New York Yankees. It's the 28th.

Not surprisingly considering the Mariners' lack of offense, Chris Chambliss has been fired as their hitting coach.
http://blog.seattlepi.com/baseball/2...ris-chambliss/
The Seattle Mariners on Wednesday — the day after their final game of the season — announced that hitting coach Chris Chambliss will not return next year.
“We will begin an immediate search for a new hitting coach,” M’s GM Jack Zduriencik said in an announcement. “On behalf of the Mariners organization, I want to thank Chris for all of his hard work and dedication over the past two seasons.”
On Wednesday, the team announced that all of its other coaches will be coming back for the 2013 season. Returning are pitching coach Carl Willis, infield bench coach Robby Thompson, first-base coach Mike Brumley, third-base coach Jeff Datz, bullpen coach Jaime Navarro and bullpen catcher Jason Philips.

I think this is the first in a long line of changes. When I think back to the days of RJ, A-Rod, Edgar Martinez and Griffey Jr. and Ichiro, it's hard to believe this is the same franchise. I know players come and go, but they seemed to be content to just go with whatever happened.

CLEVELAND — Terry Francona’s interview to be the Cleveland Indians’ next manager is under way.
Francona, who managed the Boston Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007, arrived at Progressive Field at 8:15 a.m. on Friday to begin a daylong interview. Francona spent time on the field watching Indians employees play in a softball tournament. Francona worked as an adviser in Cleveland’s front office in 2001 and has said he would like the chance to rejoin the club.
Francona spent the past year working as a TV analyst. He was fired in Boston last season after the team collapsed down the stretch.
On Thursday, Sandy Alomar Jr. interviewed with the Indians. He served as the club’s interim manager for the final six games after Manny Acta was dismissed.
The Indians may name a new manager as early as next week.

Re: Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread
I've got my selfish reasons for hoping he doesn't get it - he did a terrific job in the ESPN booth this year. However, whoever ends up with him as a manager is getting a class act and Lord knows, he survived a season with the most selfish bunch of losers I can recall without slitting his wrists.

Matt Kemp underwent an hourlong operation Friday that revealed the condition of his left shoulder was worse than expected, raising doubts about whether he will be at full strength for the start of next season.
Kemp is believed to have torn his labrum crashing into a wall in Colorado on Aug. 28. He and the Dodgers were hoping the damage would be relatively minor and require nothing more than a cleanup, but Dr. Neal ElAttrache decided the labrum had to be repaired — that is, reattached to the socket.

Good luck Terry:
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/84...veland-indians
I am glad he has a new managerial job. Contrary to what I have read here, I thought he was mediocre, at best, as an announcer on ESPN..........but, being teamed with Orel and Dan could bring anyone down. I thought he was a class act with the Red Sux and hope he does well with Cleveland, where his father played.
