Re: Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread
It isn't where the ball hits the ground but where it ends up that determines fair/foul. It initially hit in foul territory and then rolled fair. That part of it is not in dispute. The controversy stems from the fact that the home plate umpire threw his arms up as if to indicate a foul and only after the ball rolled fair did he signal fair. This, of course, confused the runners on first and second who couldn't see the exact position of the ball. In the end, however, even if the umpire had not initially indicated foul, the Dodgers would have almost certainly completed a 2-5-3 double play considering that the batter backed out of the box and didn't run.

Re: Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread
I think they probably would have even gotten a triple play given how close it was to the catcher and the fact that the batter wasn't even close to running. The only possible close play might have been at second. That being said, you can't signal dead ball and then signal that it's in play. The ultimate call of it being fair and the ultimate result of it being a triple play were both probably correct, but the umps screwed up by allowing it to stand nonetheless.

It makes me wonder what goes on in Leyland's mind. If I am not mistaken, Verlander has given up the majority of his runs in the 9th inning, and you have to think he was overthrowing when he was in trouble yesterday. He's going to burn the guy out. I might understand the approach in a playoff game, but in April?

Jamie Moyer could get the win, if the Rockies hold on - leading 3-2 in the 8th:
J. Moyer 7 IP, 6hits 2 UNearned runs. Carpy defense behind him
He'll never get another milestone like that one. So what? His whole career is a milestone.

Right now, the Rays have the worst run differential in MLB, at -23. They have given up the second most runs in the majors at 64, behind only Boston (68).
I know we're only 11 games into the season, but hopefully this trend continues.27 World Championships

Moyer is 2 wins behind Mussina. Mussina is tied for 33rd in career wins and fifth among recent players behind Maddux, Clemens, Glavine, and Johnson.

Re: Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread
The Cain-Lee duel is off the chain.
Cain went 91 pitches through nine, allowing no runs.
Cliff Lee is still in the game after ten. He's at 102 pitches and is due up in the top of the eleventh.
It's 0-0.
EDIT: Lee is pulled for Thome with a man on third and no outs.
EDIT2: Thome strikes out, and Mayberry grounds out to end the inning. Neither Cain nor Lee will get the win. This game is ridiculous.
EDIT3: The Melkman delivers!! The only man with multiple hits in the game gets his third hit and the only RBI of the game to end it in the 11th. What a game!!
