Mothers Day means PINK around the league.
http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=310504106Before the game, a few Tigers showed off pink shoes they received from sponsors to wear on Mother's Day this weekend. RHP Rick Porcello had a bright pink pair, with darker pink trim. "I can call my mom and tell her I love her on Mother's Day," Porcello said. "I don't have to wear these shoes." .

Everybody at the time thought DiMag was chasing George Sisler's mark of 40 until somebody dug up Keeler's 44. There wasn't an Elias Bureau for that sort of thing then. You might think that possibly that circumstance may have stirred record keepers to start making all of the game's records more formal and standard.
But then you have YES Network tracking Jeter's climb up the ladder to 3000 and having Keeler with 2955 hits when everybody, including MLB, has him with 2932, so maybe it's not so standard after all.
I haven't read the current book about the streak "56" yet, but awhile ago I read Michael Seidel's "Streak", and there was truly a national fascination about it. Everybody knew it was only a matter of time before we joined WWII and this was the last fling with less important things before Americans started dying.Mays played baseball. Mantle was baseball.

No fun allowed!
Source: http://nybaseballdigest.com/?p=35427Before every game, position players on both teams will gather on the foul lines and do their last sprints before the first pitch, and often this leads to greetings in the outfield behind second base — hearty handshakes and hugs.
If Joe Torre, baseball’s new czar of on-field discipline, has his way, then this kind of thing will be curtailed. Torre has asked club staff members to nudge their players toward curtailing that kind of fraternization after the gates have been opened to fans.

That's kinda surprising, considering it's Torre, but I can see his side of it, especially if it prolongs drills. It doesn't particularly bother me, but I know a lot of fans don't want to see opposing players acknowledge each other period. IMO, there's a lot more fraternization now than in the past. You never used to see a runner laughing and talking with infielders after he reached the bag or in between pitches.

................ing weak. To me one of the biggest tenets of sports is showing respect for your adversaries and teammates alike. Especially in this day and age, when half of the other team may have played with you on some other team before, in the majors, minors, college, HS... there's no reason these guys shouldn't just say "hi" and shake hands before the game. It's not like they're playing Twister and throwing horseshoes in the outfield or anything. I mean, if someone sets up a slip and slide in the visitor's bullpen, I'll jump on board with this, but until then I'm against it.

yucky.ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa will miss Tuesday's series opener at Chicago for medial evaluation of an affliction to his face and right eye.
The team says the examination will be at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. The Cardinals did not disclose the problem, but La Russa said in late April that he was dealing with a lingering case of conjunctivitis, an inflammation commonly known as pink eye.

ANAHEIM, CA - MAY 10: Fans wear wrestling masks given away as a promotion as they set a Guinness World Record for "largest gathering of people wearing costume masks" during the game between the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on May 10, 2011 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California.
What a blast.

Re: Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread
I'd expect nothing less from those tools. I went to an Angels game about 5 years ago while on vacation....the Angels won like 7-1 or 8-1 something like that. The entire section around me was upset that they didnt see the rally monkey. Yep that was more important to them then winning the game.

Ehhh. So the angels had a wrestling mask give-away. Looks like some had fun with it. Good for them.
