Re: Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread
I think the Padres win this deal.
Mat Latos who is tough and throws hard will also put his shoulder problems to the test against a manager who ruins pitchers careers in Dusty Baker and also, going to a hitter friendly park in the Great American Ballpark.
Edinson Volquez is relieved to leave GAB and Dusty's capability of wearing down pitchers to go to a pitcher friendly Petco Park. It's not the 27 World Championships that drive the New York Yankees. It's the 28th.
Every year is The Year. Go Yankees.

Re: Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread
That's a lot to give up, but I suppose it's defensible. Alonso's blocked at 1B and probably can't play LF long-term, they have a (slightly) better catching prospect than Grandal, and Volquez is just a mess. I don't know anything about Boxberger, but his numbers were great last year. Maybe they could have gotten a better return for those guys, but who knows.
I'll be interested to see how Latos fares outside of Petco. His home/road splits aren't too extreme, but Great American can be a tough a place to pitch for some guys.

They still have Votto for another two years. Alonso isn't going to sit around for two years. They still have some depth with Mesorarco, Hamilton, Cozart, and Fraizer(who could end up playing 1B).
I'm just glad Reds are out of the running for a SP, makes things much easier when going after a Danks type pitcher.

Wow, this looks like a heist to me. First good trade on the Padres' part in years, IMO. Volquez has good peripherals and will pitch much better in Petco. Grandal, Boxberger, and Alonso all seem like real major league players, at least in some capacity.
like delv, but better

I like it for both teams. Alonso and Grandal are both blocked at the ML level and they needed a good SP in the worst way, plus they have him for 4 more years. If you're going to spend organizational talent, I think Jocketty did well with how he did it.
Yonder is really a DH. He's a butcher in the field at every position.

The Tigers announced Friday that right-handed reliever Al Alburquerque had surgery on his throwing elbow one day earlier, and is expected to miss the first half of the 2012 season.
Renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews performed the surgical procedure Thursday in Pensacola, Fla., inserting a screw in the olecranon (the back end of the ulna) of Alburquerque's throwing arm to stabilize a stress fracture.
Alburquerque missed time as a rookie with a concussion and tightness in his forearm, but the latest issue was reportedly identified in an outing in winter ball in the last week, and will likely cost last year's rookie sensation half of his sophomore season. Alburquerque won't throw for 12 weeks, then will begin a throwing program late in spring training, with the hopes of having him ready to pitch again around the All-Star break in July.

You have to feel sorry for Mat Latos. A starting Pitcher pitching for Dusty Baker is even worse than a Relief Pitcher pitching for Joe Torre.

Re: Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread
I just view it as a GM with spare pieces to trade is out of the picture. Instead of 6 teams fighting for 7 pitchers, we got 5 teams fighting for 7 pitchers now, cause Latos really wasn't on the block.
Reds are about to get Marshall for Wood and two prospects. I'd looooove for them to sign Madson now. So the Red Sox have to sign CoCo Cordero. I'd actually call up Walt if I'm Cashman and see if he has any interest in Soriano.
