I'd prefer that he not play at all actually, but if he has to play I'm glad its for the US.

A-Rod chose not to play, then MLB decided to stick their noses into it.

I totally agree. I have been defending Alex to my MetSox friends for the past two years, but even I am starting to get pissed at his handling of this matter.

I don't know how much of this decision was him wanting to play and how much was Gene Orza and Bud Selig pressuring/forcing him to play.

I had read reports that they were going to try and get him to play, but I was hoping he wouldn't back down from the stance of "I'm not playing".

If he has to play I'm glad it's for the US.

Him playing for the DR is as corny as Piazza playing for Italy.

Piazza playing for Italy isn't as much corny as it is pathetic.

    Ahh, gotcha.

I think the whole idea is idiotic, hopefully the WBC flops and they never do it again.

I used to like the WBC a lot more when Sugar Ray Leonard was fighting Roberto Duran for its welterweight title.

Yeah, seems like he was "strongly encouraged". I can't believe that the owners are letting their multi-millon dollar players risk injury right before the season begins, in order for Selig to play the great and powerful Oz. Murphy's Law almost guarantees that someone's going to get hurt. Gazing into the crystal ball, I see a lot of pissed off baseball fans in Selig's future. Is this even going to be broadcast on any of the Major TV networks?

I realize that...but he was born in the heights, and is essentially a lifelong FL boy. I am unclear just how much time he spent in the DR (wasn't it as an infant), but to me he is more USA than DR.

Also not to keep picking the poor guy apart (I love ARod despite his postseason showing), but his Spanish is questionable. Ever notice on the YES SAP commercials, while everyone else pronounces it "Essay-Ah-Pay" (as it is supposed to be pronounced), ARod, after stumbling through the teleprompter, says "Ah-Essay-Pie"? After my girlfriend (Puerto Rican, fluent in Spanish) first saw it she was like "what the hell did he just say?"

I do not want to call into question his heritage or his pride, his authenticity, etc...His flip-flopping has been annoying yet I understand it. I'm just stating that to ME, at least, he is USA all the way and the WBC roster should reflect that.

In all fairness its not as if A-Rod's ever been opposed to this tournament, at least going by his public statements. And until about a month ago he was expressing excitement in playing, and if his public reasons for backing out are to be believed he never did express a lack of desire to play. Players like Matsui, Rivera, and Tadahito Iguchi have publicly expressed concern about their health or have mentioned their dedication to their ballclubs as reasons not to play, but A-Rod merely said that he was unable to make the choice of which team to play for.

Somewhere in the last few weeks we've just sort of come up with this idea of Orza/Selig strong arming him based off of what seems to be a single quote (and, I imagine, a great deal of personal bias and dislike). But if A-Rod is to be believed he always wanted to play and that desire never faded. If he came to a decision or if someone helped him to come to a decision as to which team to play for than theoretically that was the sole barrier blocking him.

Now, that's all dependant on believing A-Rod's public statements. But it certainly seems to be more defendable a stance than this idea that seems to be forming of A-Rod being an unwilling participant and a victim of strong arm tactics.

What are you reading? This is from your link:

"............and I look forward, if selected, to representing the United States in what will be baseball's greatest international competition."
Later in the day, Rodriguez made his decision to participate, according to agent Scott Boras.
