Re: How great would it be to have Pettitte Back....
Rumor, as far as I know. Around the time he left, there was a gossip-column item structured as a "What New York athlete" question about a former NY player (didn't even say which team) who had been caught cheating and called home by his furious wife. Because of the timing, everyone assumed it was Andy, but I've never seen any confirmation of that.

They should have tried harder. They had well-founded concerns about his arm, which blew out the following season, but they low-balled him and allowed him to follow his heart back to Texas.

Not very hard. They lowballed him until it was already too late. Apparently, they thought that repeatedly declaring him their number-one offseason priority woudl be enough.

I remember them offering more than the Astros. Is there a way to look this up?

Ultimately, but not until it was too late and the decision had already been made.

Re: How great would it be to have Pettitte Back....
I think he left for more money (could be wrong). I also think his departure had more to do with his family's desires to live in Texas, and his feeling undervalued by the Yankees. That's why I say they should have tried harder.

If the Yanks somehow bring him back I'll welcome him at Yankee Stadium like a lost brother... until then... moving on... next.

Its never too late until you sign the contract.

Have to remember also that the Yankees didn't show an interest that they should have had if they truly wanted to resign him.

It's lowballing when you compare it to what they gave Kevin Brown.

Well, the Astros thought more of him than that, didn't they?

Re: How great would it be to have Pettitte Back....
My understanding is that Pettitte (and Pettitte's father?) were a little upset that it took three weeks (or however long it was) before they even received a phone call. In the meantime, the Astros had been courting Andy the entire time.
My understanding is that it was more about respect than anything else. Andy had wanted to return to the Yanks, and had expected to return, but felt slighted.

Yet Cashman denied those reports.
