Rumor, as far as I know. Around the time he left, there was a gossip-column item structured as a "What New York athlete" question about a former NY player (didn't even say which team) who had been caught cheating and called home by his furious wife. Because of the timing, everyone assumed it was Andy, but I've never seen any confirmation of that.

They should have tried harder. They had well-founded concerns about his arm, which blew out the following season, but they low-balled him and allowed him to follow his heart back to Texas.

Not very hard. They lowballed him until it was already too late. Apparently, they thought that repeatedly declaring him their number-one offseason priority woudl be enough.

I remember them offering more than the Astros. Is there a way to look this up?

I think he left for more money (could be wrong). I also think his departure had more to do with his family's desires to live in Texas, and his feeling undervalued by the Yankees. That's why I say they should have tried harder.

But as others have said here, he's gone, let's get over it.

If the Yanks somehow bring him back I'll welcome him at Yankee Stadium like a lost brother... until then... moving on... next.

Not that it's likely to happen, but what would you give the Astros to entice them to send Andy back to us? Does it start with Pavano? Would the Yankees put Jorge in the deal and then try to sign Ausmus? Would Houston have any use for Womack? Proctor?
What would it cost? Start with Cano and Wang....... whoops! I forgot.

Its never too late until you sign the contract.

And not to be rude to him because he was a good pitcher, but if he considered the 3/39 or 4/39 (I don't really remember which it was) that we offered him to be low-balling, he has some serious deluions about the kind of pitcher he was.

Have to remember also that the Yankees didn't show an interest that they should have had if they truly wanted to resign him.

It's lowballing when you compare it to what they gave Kevin Brown.

Well, the Astros thought more of him than that, didn't they?

Yeah offering him more money showed they had little interest in him.

    A) Kevin Brown was better than Andy Pettitte.

    B) That was a Dodger contract

    They offered him less

I'm sorry John, we should be praying that the greatest postseason pitcher of all time forgives us for hurting his feelings and comes back to us.

Re: How great would it be to have Pettitte Back....

My understanding is that Pettitte (and Pettitte's father?) were a little upset that it took three weeks (or however long it was) before they even received a phone call. In the meantime, the Astros had been courting Andy the entire time.

My understanding is that it was more about respect than anything else. Andy had wanted to return to the Yanks, and had expected to return, but felt slighted.

    Thank you.

That is our only hope you know.

Well, that and if Jeff Nelson decides he wants to be a Yankee again.

    Yet Cashman denied those reports.

It was a nice little story so that Pettitte didn't look like he wanted to (had to) leave New York, though.
