Penn State Will Not Lose This Week

Yes, that's what I wrote. The NITTANY LIONS are on a bye week so they are not playing on saturday. So far this season I have to give the
defensive unit a strong B+ grade. The offense has been, well, offensive.
They have really not played well at all, and when they did, it was just in spurts. I have to blame the OL for this. It is very popular in Happy Valley to to put all the guilt on senior QB Zack Mills. While Zack is hardly an all-american candidate he is a serviceable player. He had a very good game against Purdue, the #5 team in the country, with close to 300 yds passing and no int's. His mobility is hampered since injuring his non throwing shoulder against Minn., so a large part of his game is missing as well. Overall the Offense gets D . The special teams have been getting better as the season progresses, but a special teams coach would bring about a higher level of play IMHO. Their grade C.
Coaching grade is a C-. Well until next week

Penn State's First Half Report Card

    Offense- D+

Outside of the Akron game, the PSU offense has been downright horrible. It is clear that Galen Hall is not running the show. Joe and Jay Paterno still seem to have control over the playcalling. Mills seemed to finally emerged this season with a nice game against Purdue last week but yet again the offense just isn't good enough to run with the big boys. That is sad considering that the defense is. The run game has been non-existant. Neither Hunt or Scott have solidified themself as a viable option behind a disappointing offensive line. Why isn't Rodney Kinlaw playing? He is PSU's best playmaker with his 4.3 40. Things need to change all across the offense. Unfortunately it's unlikely to happen.

    Defense- A

The defense has saved Penn State from having three blow out games against Big Ten opponents thus far. The only disappoint on the defense has been Derek Wake. As a senior and captain he has been less than impressive. Freshman blue chip LB Dan Connor has clearly outplayed him to this point. Connor will get his first start against Iowa. However, it will at MLB as Tim Shaw goes to the bench. Paterno's loyalty towards needs to end. Wake should be on the bench and Shaw starting. As long as the defense holds up in the second half, Penn State should be headed to a bowl game.

    Coaching- C

This grade is unfair to the defensive coaches. They have done a tremendous job this season and they get the same grade as the unit, an A. The offensive coaches have been horrendous. Galen Hall looks uninvolved and half-dead on the sidelines, there's no running game to speak of, the best receiver is a true freshman who was a two star recruit coming out of high school and the offensive line has been disappointing. Changes need to made. Too bad as long as Joe is the coach they won't be made. The 1980's ended 14 years ago. Time to run a 21st century offense.

    Remaining Schedule Predictions:
    vs Iowa- W 17-10
    @ Ohio State- L 13-9
    vs Northwestern- W 24-14
    @ Indiana- W 38-10
    vs Michigan State- W 20-13

6-5 and a trip to the Motor City Bowl
