Why the Athletics have an elephant logo - cool story

The A's have an elephant logo on their uniforms. I couldn't figure out why the heck that was. I heard part of a conversation about this the other day on the radio and looked into it. Here's a pic of a souvenir from the old Philadelphia A's days:

Well, here's the story. "It was "born" in 1901, the first year of the A's. Then-A's owner/manager Connie Mack had been one of the key components in the birth of the American League that year. John McGraw, the owner of the New York Giants, referred to the A's as the "White Elephants," citing that Mack shouldn't be allowed to spend money without supervision. In an act of defiance, Mack adopted the elephant insignia for his team."

The whole article is here. Interesting stuff:

I never remember the story. I find myself looking it up about once a season. Thanks for doing the legwork for me this year Steve.

I also believe that Connie Mack managed the A's for fifty years and always wore a suit and a hat in the dugout!

Re: Why the Athletics have an elephant logo - cool story

"When the A's relocated to Kansas City in 1955, the elephant made its reappearance in the form of a left-sleeve insignia. It survived fewer than ten years. When Charlie Finley purchased the team in the early Sixties, he replaced the elephant with his favorite animal, the mule. After the A's moved to Oakland, the maverick Finley took to bringing his own real-live mule (appropriately named "Charlie O") to the Oakland Coliseum. It would appear not only at ballgames, but at press conferences and just about anywhere else there was a crowd."
    A mule? What a punk...

I know. You knew that guy was whacked when he said that a mule was his favorite animal. In fairness, he had some cool ideas though -- more colorful uniforms that were rotated, orange baseballs that you could see more easily (they said no to that), ball girls, and night World Series games (which are now abused, unfortunately), interleague play (later adopted), the DH...

A lot of people hated him and rightfully so, but he was innovative as well and deserves some credit.

I always wondered what the meaning of the elephant was. I intended to look it up once, but never got around to it. Thanks for the info.
