Trade has aged Soriano
Just by the by, turns out that Soriano just turned 28 in January. His age had been, shall we say, doctored.
Word is the Rangers were aware of this before the trade.

"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston. It is understandable, but wrong that he would try to deflect the accountability for his mistakes on to others and to a system for which he voted in favor. It is time to get on with life and forget the sour grapes."

This trade keeps getting better and better...
btw, My guess is that Sori's situation is not unique, despite more stringent measures that were put in place in recent years to verify a player's real age.

Wow, this really does have huge consequences. Basically, Soriano is no longer on the statistical upswing of his career (27 is generally the peak season for a major league player) and one couldn't expect much more growth for him. Futhermore, we have to look for his numbers on the basepaths to decline at a much faster rate than what we're used to.
This is a big deal, ladies and gentlemen. We lost a 28 year old poor to adequate second baseman with 98 career home runs to get a 28 year old gold glove shortstop with 345 career home runs.
This makes it even more of a steal than it already was!

Wow. This is huge. I never saw it coming. This makes the A-Rod trade even better. I still think Soriano is a great player and a good deal for the Rangers.
What is amazes me is how this info was never leaked to the press. This development and the secrecy of the A-Rod deal convinces me even more that none of us have a clue what goes inside the Yankees organization.

Now will someone believe me that Contreras is older than he says?
So, Sori is just a year younger than ARod, and cant lay off the outside pitch? I think this trade was huge, and if Jete and ARod can keep it together, we're in fine shape.

As for Soriano, even if he was 26 I still would have no second thoughts and would not have batted an eyelash in trading him for Arod.

Yes, but then he'll fall asleep at the mound!

how old was he supposed to be?
(edit, sorry I didn't see it the first time I glanced over the article)--
It was stupid on his part, but I suppose I would have done the same thing if I were trying to make the major leagues."I love Shawn Chacon

so come and take your time and dance with me." (Snap731)

It was previously reported that Soriano's birthyear was 1978.

I just read the article and came to the forum. WOW!!! So he's not the immature young kid we all thought he was. To me, he's actually too old for some of those bad habits he has at the plate. WOW.

I'm surprised that this didn't become public knowledge sooner but I can't say I'm shocked by it.given how widespread players lying about their ages is. It further speaks to why the Yankees were willing to let him go. At 28 years old there's a much smaller chance that he's going to blossom further into his talent. I liked this deal to begin with and I like it even more now.

Wow, trade looks a lot better now. Still a valuable player though.
As far as A-Rod being the best player in the game, I'm not sure about that. He might be the most valuable considering his posiston but best is a stretch IMO.
Goodbye Gravy, Nash and Olson. You'll be missed.

Oh, I definitely believe that Contreras is older than he says, but he has great stuff so at the moment I don't think it is a big deal. Now will someone believe me that Contreras is older than he says?

Good deal.
Rangers did this deal to spite Lucchino. Go Yankees!

Reason number 543 why this trade is a no-brainer, same age. What you see out of Soriano now is basically what you're going to get.

02-18-04 09:01 AM #25I doubt it, Contreras had to have his age verified with the Olympic committee, unlike Sori.Originally posted by rlsuth
