Sign up here for NYYFans.com Fantasy Baseball 2003!
Well, I thought the title said it all, but . . .
If you're interested in playing in a NYYFans.com Fantasy League this year, please sign your name up on this thread. There will almost certainly be a first-come, first-served basis, so the sooner the better. Things to bear in mind before you hit the "Submit" button:
1) There will probably be a fee to play, the entirety of which should go towards Jim F. and this marvelous website. The only exception will be if we need the cash to create a Yahoo league, or if we wish to fund a prize for the winner. If you are unable or unwilling to pay this fee (which was $10 this year, and will certainly not be more tha $20 this year), please note it in your response. Remember - without NYYFans.com, there'd be no league, so we feel that we owe it to Jim to give something back.
2) The league this year is being designed as a keeper league, with the ability to hold onto a few players for the 2004 season. If you are not interested in being part of a keeper league, and only wish to play for the 2003 season, you should again note it in your response. If you don't want to play as a keeper, you may still be able to play as a one-year owner, so be honest.
3) There is currently a blueprint document for the league rules and format on this forum - please take the time to read through it. If you feel that the rules are not to your liking, then you can raise any issues on the thread, but if you find the whole structure impossible to live with, you should probably not sign up, as the basic head-to-head league format seemed to work well last year, and I would imagine we're sticking with it.
4) We welcome first-time players, who will be given (relatively) impartial advice and help. Fantasy baseball is a great way to learn more about the game, and all skill levels were represented in last year's league.
5) No commissioner has been selected for the 2003 season yet. As the 2002 commissioner, I am working to get the 2003 season started, but there will later be an election for the 2003 commissioner. As such, enquiries about rules/technicalities can be directed to myself or Bozidar in the first instance, but any of last year's owners will respond to a query on this forum. Ask away.
6) IMPORTANT - Please do not sign up unless you inted to play a whole season. If you're the type who gets bored or depressed after a couple of losses, then go play Tic-Tac-Toe or something. It's not fair to the other players to get bored and wander off just because you're not doing so well.
It's fun, it's damn near free, and you get to beat up on your fellow forumers. Put your name on the thread, damnit.
Mods: Please stickify this thread, and de-stickify the 2002 threads from this forum. I will place a notice in the "Just Conversation" forum - this can be locked if it is felt to be inappropriate, or left open for comments.

I think you might have misinterpreted what Sax meant by "put your name on the thread"!
You sound like you're at an AA meeting
"Hi, my name's Steve and I have a fantasty sports problem"

Everyone is just putting "I'm in" or whatever. Did he mean the team name??
(That did sound kinda silly, didn't it

I think he meant "sign up!" as opposed to "when you sign up put down your name". I could be wrong though. If I am then my name's patrick
And yes, I do have a fantasy sports problem

Actual name not essential, to be honest, but putting down your team name is a very good idea. A couple of ideas:
1) Try not to just make your name similar to an actual MLB team name. Very uninteresting, and we'll probably end up with 14 teams called YANKEESROCK or something. Clever parodies are fine, but for the love of Pete Rose, please make them interesting and original. We've all heard about the Mutts and the BloSux, thanks.
2) It would help if team names were plural nouns, as in "Saxmania's Swingers", "Cunning Linguists", or "Alberquerque Chipmunks", rather than weird conglomerations of letters like NY#25OK1961. Just makes it easier to abbreviate, and a little more fun to write about. Obviously, you can choose any name you like (as long as it isn't obsence or inflammatory), but I just thought it would make other people's lives easier. To be honest, I always hated the way other sports have team names like "Heat" or "Clash" - how can a bunch of people be called "Heats"? But if you can call them "Cardinals" or "Bashers", it seems to make more sense.
These are only ideas - I don't mean to be fussy about it. Just a personal thing, really.
Steve, I think your name is absolutely inspired (I'm actually a little jealous), I'm just wondering if there's any plural noun we can use? "Evil Empire" is a fantastic name. Hmmm. You can't really be "Emperors", since there can by definition only be one Emperor. Any ideas?
Current sign-ups are below. We're already half-way to a new league - pretty good goin', people. A '?' means that I haven't had confirmation of your team name - previous owners are free to alter theirs or continue with the old one.

Seriously, I think we should wait until entries close before people put their names forward for the vote, so anyone who wants to be commish shouldn't feel shut out. Also, there will certainly be room for at least one Assistant Commissioner, possibly a Minor Leagues Commissioner, and maybe even a Reporter, so if you want to help out, you'll almost certainly get a shot.
Keep 'em coming!

I think I would like to play!
We had over 30 people 'sign up' last year, but had to scrape, tooth and nail, to get enough for an 18 team league.
I guess i'm saying, join if you're 'sure' you want to play. Thanks

Boz is right - I should have emphasized this in the first post - we need people who are certain that they'll play, and pay the fee if one is introduced (certainly not more than $20, all to Jim F.) We're not implying that you're not serious, but it was an omission on my part not to make it plain.
In fact, Boz understated the case - over 50 people signed up last year, and we barely managed to create a 15 team league! Or does that cast doubts on our organisational skills?

Sorry to be difficult but my football commisioner dubbed my team The Naked Truth (long story, more to do with naked than with truth!) and I'd like to stick with it.
