Cone Lashes Out After Game

David Cone walked off the field to a standing ovation Saturday, waving his cap in acknowledgment of a final 2001 salute from fans at Yankee Stadium. Then Cone, who was charged with six runs in five and two-thirds innings in Boston's 9-2 loss to the Yankees, snapped when he reached the visitors' clubhouse, an explosion some in Yankee Stadium will remember for many years.

Cone dumped a couple of laundry hampers, smashed a bottle and used a chair to wreck the postgame meal laid out on a table. It was Mexican food, and as Cone erupted, he covered a teammate, Dante Bichette, with a condiment.

"Sour cream," Cone acknowledged yesterday. "I was just disappointed. I wanted yesterday to go well."

Cone, 8-5 with a 4.40 earned run average, has been approached by Boston General Manager Dan Duquette about a possible deal for 2002. But Cone intends to wait until after this season to decide whether he wants to continue pitching, and whether he wants to continue with the Red Sox, who are poised for change after a disastrous season.
