Does Joe let Mo finally play CF?

As we all know, Mariano has always wanted to play CF in a major league game. Of course when the Yankees were headed to the post season, this was never a possibility given the risk. This season however is different. As I type this, they haven't been mathematically eliminated, but....

So, last game. The Yankees are winning big (or losing) and Mo isn't going to pitch, does Joe let him play one inning in CF? This article from 2011 sounds like Joe is open to it.

I hope he gets the chance to do it AND that he even gets to glide gracefully toward left center to catch a lazy fly ball.

Let Mo play CF in the 8th inning and then he can still pitch the ninth inning.

Yea, but if he gets hurt this time, he'll have literally forever to recover.

If he's going to play CF at Minute Maid Park, he'd better watch out for that hill and the flagpole.

I think if the Yankees are eliminated from the playoffs come the last day of the season, Girardi will play Mo in CF for the entire game. I think he'll also bat Mo leadoff.

2nd to last game it would be cool for him to play the 8th in CF then pitch the 9th. But the last game of the season I want to see Mo pitch 3 or more innings. Gas it out, leave it all on the field cause theres nothing to save
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

And he'll pull a long fly ball down the left field line, but at the very last second it will cut just to the left of the foul pole, ironically catching Jeffrey Maier by surprise and tragically killing him. ~fin~

I think it was 1979, the Yankees let Ron Guidry play CF after they had been eliminated. It was said he would have been the best centerfielder on the team then and he wanted to do it.

Baseball has changed a lot, huh? I cannot imagine any team allowing their best starting pitcher in the prime of his career playing centefield for a game today, regardless of the standings...

I would like to see him bat once in that final game and than pitch the final inning in a save for Andy.

September 29, 1979. Ron played a third of an inning in CF. Billy Martin was the manager

August 18, 1983. Ron played the last third of an inning in CF. It was the conclusion of the All Star Game. Billy Martin was the manager.

Guidry played CF regularly in High School and College.

Guidry also said that playing CF in the majors was a bigger thrill than going 25-3 in 1978.

Oh...only a third of an inning? I had in my head it was an entire game.

Not to call Gator a liar, but I have a hard time believing playing a third of an inning in CF was a bigger thrill than going 25-3 and winning a Cy Young Award.

If the Yanks have an E next to their name I hope Mo plays CF. That said I'd rather not see an E next to the Yanks but that's looking all too inevitable.

Let him play the whole game there since it no longer matters.

Mo has 7 total plate appearances in regular and postseason play with 1 walk, 1 RBI and no hits.let him get a full game if it doesn't matter.

The only issue with having him play the entire game is he's never done it before and who knows how good he will really do. This won't be as easy as shagging flies in BP. What happens if he misplays a few fly balls, do you pull him? If he only a plays a few innings there's less chance of that actually happening (misplaying flies), and if it does, it's not like there are 8 innings to go. But I guess if Mo thinks he's up to it . . he knows better than we do.

According to retrosheet, Guidry played the entire ninth on 9/29/79.
