    Good move.

Nunez defense is outweighing his recent offensive performance.

Fastest creation of a player performance thread in NYYFans history?

    Daniel Barbarisi @DanBarbarisi
Ryan is considered the best-fielding shortstop in baseball. When people want to trash Jeter's SS defense, they use Ryan as the archetype.

The pitching staff needs all the help it can get. Those 2 errors Nunez made tonight possibly/probably altered Nova's performance tonight.

And I can't help but think that the Hughes implosion last Friday might have been avoided or tempered if we had an elite defensive SS snag that rocket hit at him that started it all.

FWIW- Ryan isn't the best defensive SS in any league anymore. Iglesias and Simmons have that on lock.

Unlike shortstops who can field better than Jeter and Nunez, real ****ing pitchers don't grow on trees.

It is utterly pathetic that we have not one viable option in the entire organization to pitch that game. Total failure.

Ryan would be eligible for postseason IF Jeter was lost for season correct? Can't they fill injured 40 man roster spots with players not on roster?

Nevermind - I think I found the answer....

per wikipedia....To be eligible for a team’s postseason roster, a player must be on any of the following: (a) the active 25-man roster (b) the disabled list, (c) the bereavement list, or (d) the suspended list as of August 31 at midnight ET.[1] The only exception is that a player who is on the disabled list at the end of the regular season may be replaced on the postseason roster by any other player who was in the organization on August 31, with the approval of the commissioner of baseball.

Where is that tranquility guy, president of the Ryan Fanboy Club?

Ryan's defensive metrics have tanked this season. Zone rating way down, and 11 errors in like 80 games.

He's also in the running for worst hitting regular in the majors over the last couple of seasons

I see him in a utility SS/3B role and as a defensive replacement. Nunez will keep getting the majority of starts at SS, he's hitting too well lately to sit

Maybe not Thursday but Nik Turley should be called up for Huff's next start. 10K's in 6 innings for Trenton last night winning game 1 of the Eastern League finals. He's already on the 40 man roster.

It is a damn shame Phelps, Nuno, and Pineda are injured. One of those three would have no doubt been in the rotation by now.

I dunno, Nunez - with his hands of stone - may sit more than we think. I would not be surprised to see Ryan start tonight, since Andy is such a ground ball pitcher. The left side was a disaster last night.

I think it also shows that we have likely seen the last of Jetes until the end of the season. Ryan not eligible for the postseason, so he is obviously just a bridge.

He's suddenly become an offensive monster. And I don't mean he's so monstrously bad it's offensive ...

Two for four tonight, one of the hits a home run. That's a full quarter of all the hits they had, and he also scored half of the Yankee runs.

Ryan made $3.25 million this year. For that price I'd like to see him back as the starting SS in 2014 while an overall plan for the team is still being worked out. He may not hit much but at least I won't have to hold my breath for every grounder hit to short. In fact, he'll probably provide some nice work we can really appreciate in what may be an otherwise dull season.

Good lord no. Despite his "big game" the man is an utter disaster at the plate.

What's the alternative at short? Nunez can't hit or field. Nix is just average all around. Probably not going to spend a lot at this position until at least the following year.

I don't know the alternative but if Ryan is the starting shortstop I'm going to vomit a little.

He's fixable, according to K-Long. (Reported by Kay on the YES gamecast tonight.)
