Cleveland 9-6 vs the Twins this season so its possible Minnesota could win a game. Indians have 2 games left with the White Sox and so far their record against them is 15-2!

Nicely done. That would also mean that if the winner of the extra regular season game wins the wildcard game, that it would have won two consecutive win or go home games against different teams....just like football.

Yankees could even win 91 games in the event of a three-way tie. But that is getting too complicated.

Re: Countdown to 89 wins - Optimists only

What is the likelihood one of these teams don't get to 88 wins if Yanks win out?

Tampa 86 wins, 7 left to play (would need to go 1-6)
Cleveland 86 wins, 6 left to play (would need to go 1-5)
Texas 84 wins, 7 left to play (would need to go 3-4)
KC 82 wins, 7 left to play (would need to go 5-2)
O's 81 wins, 7 left to play (would need to go 6-1)

Well Tampa is about to go on a 4-game losing streak cause O's will win tonight and Yanks will sweep them in NY.

That's not the question. We are eliminated if TWO of them get to 89 or better. If ALL of them also finish at 88 (or one at 89 or better and the rest at 88), we are still in a tiebreaker game or games.
"Deep to left! Yastrzemski will not get it! It's a home run! A three-run homer by Bucky Dent! And the Yankees now lead by a score of 3-2!" - New York Yankees announcer Bill White (October 2, 1978)

you really are optimistic. First the Yanks win out and then two of the group don't get to 89 wins.

Huh? I didn't say it would happen, I was just clarifying the analysis. The 0.4% on mlb.com is about right.

Francesa mentioned today (I don't know where he got it) that if the Yanks won out, their chance of making the playoffs would rise to 15% from current like 1%.

Re: Countdown to 89 wins - Optimists only

The Rays win tonight was just about the final straw. We needed to be no further behind them than 4 games so that even if we ran the table (6-0), they would still need to win all 3 against Toronto to clinch. Now if they win 2/3 against Toronto they can not be caught. Cleveland is simply a runaway freight train right now- beating up on every jayvee squad they can find. Houston will continue to roll over and get swept by Texas but I would not be shocked if the LAA split the final 4 with Texas. That still puts Tex out of reach. KC and Balt are of no concern.

The only hope now is to sweep the Rays and hope they go 1-2 at Toronto. Not impossible

Lloyd: What do you think the chances are of our Yankees reaching the Wild Card?
Mary: Well, Lloyd, that's difficult to say. I mean, we don't really...
Lloyd: Hit me with it! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way just to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are their chances?
    Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Mary: I'd say more like one out of a million.
    [pause]
Lloyd: So you're telling me there's a chance... *YEAH!*
