I think a lineup of Gardener, Jeter, Cano, A Rod (if/when hes back) then Ichiro gives us the best strategic lineup available. Good combination of left/right hand hitters so managers cant just bring in a lefty reliever to screw us up late in the game.

Great to have him back, but he's gone 1/9 in rehab games and looked bad on the field. Is he really gonna help the team at this point?

It's about giving the rest of the team a mental boost more than it is getting him back playing at this point. I think it's a good move.
    Let the kids play.

Ratings and attendance probably play a part as well

No doubt, it'll give the team a boost, but how long will that last if he appears over matched in current form?

And will pitchers appreciate seeing balls get by him that Cruz or Nunez easily get to?

    I hope you're right, but.....

I also think he wanted his first games to be at home.

No matter what, Derek is clutch and he's a good hitter.. Even though his range isn't great he can still pick it, and get the crowd going!! He's a winner!

I'm with you. I feel like his rehab has been rushed. With that said, it wouldn't surprise me if he is strictly DH'ing until after the All Star Break, especially with Hafner leaving the game with a minor injury last night.

Even if for now he can be a LHP-murdering DH option that would be a big boost. Clearly this team needs all the offensive help it can get, but I hope they don't rush him back at SS. Another chance to add to his legacy, if he can somehow help this team into the playoffs.

Didn't know about Hafner's injury- but he's been a non factor for a while now

Let Jeter DH until he feels ready to play SS. Its got to be an upgrade over Hafner at DH.

Team is in 4th place now and 6 games out of first place. They need all the help they can get right now. If he hits close to his usual self he is going to make a positive difference. They'll DH him until he is solid enough to play SS.

You can't expect him to go out there and pick up the entire team slack, he is going to contribute hopefully in a good way, and it really is up to the entire team to get hot again, and having Jeter's presence there will certainly help.

Jeter could be on same return path DiMaggio took in amazing summer of '49

He has to be better than those playing shortstop since April. Wouldn't expect a miracle, but competence and reliably replacement level or slightly better production are possible.

In-field base-hit is one of the best ways to test that ankle, he looked pretty good running.

    From Jayson Stark's twitter:

"Scouts who have been watching Jeter don't think he's ready. One said: "Everything is still out of sync. He looked about 60 percent to me."

Hell, his 60% is 110% better than what we had
