2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
glad he's getting this opportunity, some seem to be down on him. what's the rationale?
“I really thought I played great defense when the ball wasn't hit at me,” Alex Rodriguez said.

The rationale that if a young player struggles early, he sucks and the Yankees should get rid of him.

His at bats are definitely improving lately. Should be fun to see what he can do with some extended playing time the next week or so.

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
Yeah he's just startin' to get his legs under him.
Stewart really needs to be 100% before he catches another game.
If that's for 5-7 days so be it.
Until then it's Romine's.

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
Stewie is back with a vengeance.
2 for 4 with his 7th RBI of the year, jacking that BA up to .278

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
Was he never taught how to block the plate or is he just afraid of body contact (he actually backed into the plate, avoiding contact, instead of charging into the runner or dropping to his knees)? Whether the runner was out or not on that play is irrelevant to how his weaknesses are being exposed. Plus, plus defense (so says Mark Newman), my a$s. This is not him "struggling"; it's what he is.
I'm sure his catching - non-existent pitch framing and lack of presence behind the plate, is privately driving the pitchers and Girardi mad.

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
I felt he could have blocked the plate much better.
Nix's throw beat Joyce home in the 7th, but Romine was not in front of the plate.
The throw was there by a mile.

Yeah, I talk about Adams having good abs regardless of the results......this guy is the opposite.
He's not a failed prospect, just not ready yet. Frankie can't get back soon enough. Good experience for him nonetheless.

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
As long as Stewie is 100% he needs to play.
But if he not feeling right then Romine has got to go out there and do his best.
The Yankees can not afford to have Stewie on the DL.

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
It was good to see Romine get two hits up the middle, it showed he was squaring it up. But he was totally overpowered by Allen's fastball.

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
Dude got a hit. To bad it wasn't one to break up a no-hitter.
Would have been more dramatic.

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
Yankees are totally stuck with him at backup because of Cervelli's latest setback.
Two weeks of doing absolutely nothing. Then MAYBE starting rehab over again.

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
He is now hitting pretty well and deserves a chance. The rest of the way Girardi should play him most days and use Stewart as the backup. What do they have to lose at this point? They know what Stewart is, including his limitations.

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
Since my accidental duplicate thread was closed, I'll copy last night's post here:
He's actually been a relatively bright spot on the offensive side of late. (Notice that I said "relatively" ... relative to the rest of this lineup.)
He's got his BA all the way up to .213 now (it was in the low one hundreds for a long time). He was two for three with a walk today, the only Yankee to have more than a single hit.
Those hits included the only extra-base hit of the day ... Romine's very first Major League home run. I heard he got the ball back, too ... it landed in the Padres bullpen and one of those obliging fellows handed it over.
As for Sterling's call, whoever had "Austin Powers one" in the NYYFans pool, takes home the pot.

Sterling had the same HR call for Romine as he had for Austin Kearns.

Re: 2013 Austin Romine Performance Thread
I wonder if Girardi's binder shows Romine's all star break splits
Pre All Star Break: .158/.179/.211 with an OPS of .390
Post All Star Break: .345/.441/.552 with an OPS of .993
nice night for the kid
