Re: 2013 Preston Claiborne Performance Thread

Preston Claiborne is the first Yankees' pitcher since at least 1916 to begin his MLB career with 10 straight games without issuing a walk.

Just seems like if they were tinkering so much with a young pitcher, the place to do it would be in Scranton, not the big leagues.
I've been saying this for the last 3 years. Hughes should not be in our rotation. I've also very much liked what I've seen out of Claiborne and think he could be a very decent #4 or 5 pitcher for us in the next few years. I like his stuff, or should I say, I like his stuff way more than I like Phils stuff

He hasn't started a game in his entire professional career.

playa888947576949, Phil Hughes had a 4.35 xFIP as a starter last year. Which is about what you'd expect from a #4 type.

His ERA is down to 0.49. The MLB record for best ERA by a rookie with at least 40 innings is 0.59 for Joey Devine in 2008. He has 18 1/3 innings and no wins or losses, and the most innings ever by a pitcher with an ERA under 0.50 and no wins is 18 1/3 innings for Tony Faeth of Cleveland in 1919. Faeth had only 19 career games with all of them in 1919 and 1920.

He threw 42 pitches yesterday. His previous career-high was 30.

Not that it will cause any problems, but why risk injury in a 7-1 game?

He needs to eat up Joba's innings.
    0.99 WHIP.

    Joba 1.72 WHIP.

Claiborne is statistically eating Joba's breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Because Joe will never use Preston in a close game. If the Yankees are up or down 4 or more runs in a game Girardi brings him in. But if the game is close in the 7th inning it will always be "Joba" time.

Re: 2013 Preston Claiborne Performance Thread

He lowered his WHIP to exactly 1. Only three Yankees rookies have pitched at least 50 innings with a WHIP of 1 or lower and the most recent one was Dooley Womack in 1966. Claiborne has a 2.06 ERA. Only five Yankees rookies have pitched at least 50 innings with an ERA of 2 or lower and the most recent one was Ken Holcombe in 1945. Unfortunately he doesn't have a win yet. The only pitcher this year with more innings than Claiborne, a better ERA than Claiborne, and no wins is Grant Balfour. Claiborne has by far the most innings of any AL pitcher with an ERA under 3 and no wins or saves.

Glad to see Joe use Preston in a close game and he came through it with flying colors.

Sent down to make room for Reynolds. I would have preferred sending down Warren or just DFA'ing Joba (seriously, what are we clinging to at this point?) and I still do not understand why they needed to call up David Huff. Claiborne has actually been really solid even if he has regressed a bit as of late.

I don't get it. Joba is useless.

They might need him to drill someone during the BOS series.

This move really angers me. Claiborne has been solid most of the year. Joba for the most part has been horrible. Did you see the look on Joe's face when he had to pull him in the ninth last night. And even if there is some reason that they can't send Joba down why keep Huff?

I like Claiborne a lot. Always seems to get the job done, no matter what the situation is. Very effective mid-inning pitcher!

He did throw 2 nice changeups to Carp. Otherwise he was pretty sh*tty.

I think I have more confidence in Joba than I do this guy right now.
