Re: Nova is tiresome. Call up Nuno or Wang.

Nova's problem is mechanics. He needs work to become consistant. He hhas the ability to become a solid starter. I say give him two or three more starts before sending him down. If we can straighten out those mechanics we have a solid reliable starter who has more potential than any of the pitchers mentioned. Give him a little more time

Nuno needs some serious consideration, he's picking up right where he left off in Spring Training. Not sure what he looks like long term but hey gotta ride the short term success
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

Well, in Nova's defense, he has CC, Andy, Kuroda ahead of him. Somebody has to lose games, as we are not going undefeated.

    His problems are
a straight as an arrow 4 seam fastball
a good off-speed pitch but doesn't locate it well and hangs it just a bit too often
    and no real 3rd pitch.

I'd be 100% behind sending him back to AAA to work on stuff.

I don't disagree with this. I would like to see if Nunos dominance can translate to major league hitters. If anything, I think he could have pretty good success first time around the majors until the adjustment.

That being said, Nova's start yesterday wasn't as bad as it looked. After getting through 5 Joe should have been ready with the quick hook, he barely recovered after a shaky 2 first innings. Might not of mattered anyways Logan and Phelps looked as bad as Nova.

In my opinion, this is Nova's biggest problem, and it exacerbates other issues. While he can dial it up to 94-96 MPH he needs to locate it, especially since he makes no effort to hide the ball out of his hand.

Nova frustrates me more than any other Yankee player. All the talent in the world yet for whatever reason, he has been unable to build upon the success that he had in 2011. And now, he is at best a 5 inning pitcher on the brink of disaster in every inning that he pitches.

Not to give a non sequitur here, but until I read this thread I had totally forgotten Warren was on the team. He's pitched in like 2 games all year. What do you guys think? Is he worth a shot? The only time I've ever seen him pitch is during that opening series against the Red Sox, and he looked good then.

To be fair to Warren, he should be sent down to SWB and pitch on a regular basis, so that he is ready when needed.

Although he pitched an inning tonight, 8.1 innings (5.1 of which came in his first game) in 18 games does not keep a long man/spot starter sharp.

I think Adam Warren has the stuff to be a solid 4/5 starter on this team, but until he is stretched out, he will never be successful. Better to send him down to prepare for when needed then to leave him in the bullpen to be called upon every 13 days (the number of days between his appearances).

Similar issue with Phelps, but at least he is appearing fairly regularly.

Yeah, I agree. Didn't realize it had been 13 full days between appearances...WOAH. The Yankees just do not do well at managing young pitching. Train him as a starter or as a reliever, that's fine, but at least use him with some sort of regularity.

Re: Nova is tiresome. Call up Nuno or Wang.

Nova's statistics actually aren't as bad as I thought they were going to be. For the year his FIP is 2.86 and his xFIP is 3.70, indicating that he's pitching a lot better than his numbers suggest.

The problem is that he's leading the entire league in BABIP right now. For pitchers who have thrown more than 10 innings this year, he's at the top with a mark of .442. That's pretty ridiculous when compared to the typical league average of .295 - .305.

I don't think he's earned a demotion quite yet. If he's still issuing four free passes a game when his luck evens out, then I'll be concerned.

Part of that is the formula of having a lefty specialist, a 7th inning guy, an 8th inning guy and a closer. Mixing and matching and all hands on deck to give some of these young guys regular work other than mop up duty might be better for the team long term. But I am dreaming if I think this will happen.

Well, the send-Nova-down folks might get their wish here. Do you think they'll call up Nuno or Wang, though? I don't see it. If Nova goes on the DL, I think Phelps will slot into his spot and Warren will take over for Phelps. Which is really the way it should go. But it would be fun to see the return of Chien-Ming Wang at some point this season.

cody eppley will get called up.

As much as we want to see nuno or the wanger, theyre not on the 40, so they won't make sense unless another starter gets injured.

The 40 man roster argument is easy to resolve - Jeter to the 60-day. Problem solved.

You may well be right that it will be Eppley and neither Nuno or Wang. I personally believe Phelps, then Warren both deserve the shot first, but we are going to need a long-man to replace whichever of them slots into Nova's place in the rotation and Eppley is not that answer.
Forgive me for taking the Contrarian view
