    Ben Francisco back Batting 2nd.

I just don't get it. This guy should not even be on the team yet Joe bats him second. Bottom of the lineup maybe but i have no words for him batting second again.

Yeah, I don't get this at all. I think Phelps has been woefully mismanaged this year. If you want to make him a reliever, fine, but don't just have him do mopup work.

Dude's a clown. How do you not play Hafner two days in a row? Not only is Francisco terrible, he can't get on base nearly as well as Pronk.
    Just plain stupid.

Fortunately Ichiro made it a moot point but why in the world did Girardi let Stewart face Rodney in the 9th? Why is Boesch on this team if you are not going to use him in that situation?

Joe is making some really puzzling decisions lately.

More straw grasping? - Maybe they are trying to let BenF play to hope he does something so the Yankees can get something for him when they dump him (but by playing him, his value if further deflating).

There's just no explaining his thinking.

Re: 2013 Joe Girardi performance thread:

I liked the aggressive base running, run and hit and Cano steal, in the 8th and 9th, but I did not understand not pinch hitting for Stewart with Boesch. That seemed a no-brainer to me. Yet, Lou and Cone and Singleton did not even mention the option.

As for Francisco, he is on the team to play a role. Perhaps he should not have been selected to do so, but he did have a good ST with the Yankees. I don't blame Girardi for giving him some chance to fulfull that role and for trying to get him going after he had few early at-bats with all the RHed starters the Yankees faced after Lester in game one.

But Francisco's rope must be getting short. I would like to see the Yankees give the younger Neal a chance. I think he is hitting at AAA. And then when and if Mustelier gets going, give him a chance as well. I am not sure they want to play Hafner against tough LHed starters. They probably want to give him days off and want to find a more RHed lineup against guys like Price and Moore.

IF you want to give BenF a chance to fulfill that role... why in the 2 spot (twice) and then the 5 spot?

Re: 2013 Joe Girardi performance thread:

The role is to hit. As I said, Girardi is trying to get him going. He probably thinks that hitting him around the best hitters might do so. This is not atypical for traditional managerial thinking.

I don't say I agree with this line of thinking or even want Francisco on the team. But I don't think Giradi's handling of BF is inconsistent with Girardi being a typical, pretty traditional manager. I guess I have just stopped blaming him for being that.

Maybe it's like when Torre played Enrique Wilson in RF because he wanted Cashman to get him another OFer?

It was brought up on the broadcast several times that Ben Zobrist has great stats against Andy Pettitte and he had already got one hit off him in the game. So with first base open and two outs why not have Pettitte walk him. Even after the count went to 2-0 they pitched to him and he got the winning hit.

He has walked up to the plate and gotten into the RH batter's box many many times. Apparently that's enough.
